Game of Thrones is a very faithful adaptation of a better book series that starts to collapse under its own weight after Book 3. Would not recommend either.

I think Season 1 was by far the best, taken as a whole production. After that there's just too much material covered in too little space. But it's fantasy done in a way that appeals to secretaries and accountants and other normals, basically. The nerds pretty much have to like it because it's not atrocious. It's the only time I've ever seen Swords & Sorcery fantasy done in a way that didn't make me cringe, apart from the Lord of the Rings movies.
