most modern attempts at the film noir genre are pretty cheesy with stilted writing and weak plots. Done right neo noir is awesome but done wrong you get a comic book chiaroscuro wet dream nightmare. It doesn't need to revolve around some gimmick or unique visual style, it just has to be a good story executed properly. Chinatown is a flawless movie and when I say underrated, I don't mean by film critics from forty years ago or classic film buffs because in this capacity it is not. Its that the majority of people I know under fifty haven't seen it or even heard of it. Its a shame because its a really accessible movie thats aged really well
