Lowtax cornered me and wouldn't let me leave, he had all these pamphlets and I was backed up against a wall. It was a bad day, I just finished work and it was lousy, I had recently broken up with a girl and was feeling so low. He just grabbed me, he wouldn't stop talking. I didn't want to believe but I was desperate, desperate I tell you. So I handed the man ten bucks to be a part of his flock. Then immediately afterwards I went to McDonald's and realised I handed over the only money I had. A few hours later I was probated for posting cat photos. Then I realised that the devil was set upon me that day. THE DEVIL! YOU OWE ME A MCDONALDS LOWTAX!

Serious answer: Was listening to moot talk about how he thinks 4chan is better than SA because it gets a regular influx of new members and SA is crap because the pay wall has made it stagnant. Thought to myself that's exactly the kind of poo poo I want to be a part of.

The thing about the paywall is that it lets us have some semblence of good moderation (pretty much all other forums on the internet are a total shithouse). There's tons of people from all walks of life willing to give advice or help in the various subforums, there's tons to learn (GWS for example). There's tons of various perks which have all made the $10 worth it (between the various class actions I've gotten money from that SA told me about, to random poo poo like getting free poo poo in games and being part of a group of people to play with that aren't total idiots). Various 10-20% discounts on poo poo I would have bought anyway. I don't really think that stuff would exist if any random fuckwit could post (the $10 really drives people away. good.) SA is pretty great. At the very least we haven't had a murderer post pics of his recent crimes in GBS to my knowledge so that's good.

Not gonna pretend like I know a lot about SA but I too think the pay wall is good. Because the only alternative is having a reputation system. A reputation system so that if someone is being an rear end in a top hat people will give him negative rep which affects the number that shows up under his name with every post. Reputation systems are loving dumb, forum moderation should not be a democracy where every user plays a part. It just encourages poo poo storms and reputation wars. Also stops people from speaking out against other users because "oh no my precious reputation." Then the entire forum just becomes a game of who can suck up the most and get the highest reputation.

I never paid 10bux. My flatmate joined before I did, and I used to make photoshop fridays that he would submit. Eventually he got annoyed with posting my poo poo all the time so he bought me an account, because "No way I'm paying 10bux to post on a loving internet forum." Also I did not have paypal or a credit card. As soon as I joined, I prostituted my limited artistic ability drawing animated avatars in GBS for plat and archives, except once I had all the upgrades people still wanted avatars so I had to create a paypal account for people to throw money at. So I got paid 70bux to be here, I guess.
