they have $8k in the tor fund, which is counted in the overall bank balance but is earmarked for the tor node specifically and can't be put toward regular noisebridge expenses, so they subtract the "tor node only" money from the "total noisebridge bank balance" to get "the amount of money we can actually spend on noisebridge stuff". they have $20k in the bank but $8k of that

since noisebridge is a 501(c)3 non-profit, donations to the tor node are tax deductible

i'm not sure how much they're actually paying for it now because, in true noisebridge fashion, nobody is updating the public info about it anymore. well, that's not quite true. they've got a public spreadsheet that shows noisetor's financials, but although it shows donations every day, it stopped showing payments in early 2013. back then, though, they had one node which they were paying $787 a month for. now they have two nodes

the next board should enact new bylaws changing that so they can use the tor funds for operating expenses and more easily ban people

the fallout would be hilarious
