i hope it cuts out the background noise, OP  anyway the answer is it looks up similar data sets in a huge db & the data sets are made by fourrier analysing a bunch of bands

i like thing identifier software algos! shazam doesn't really filter out noise, it just works despite it it works by identifying peaks in the spectogram and pairing them up and finding a song with enough matching pairs even though background noise adds some additional peaks that don't match anything or match other songs, there is usually enough of the original peaks that you can get a clear best match they have a paper by wang (heh) that explains it, it should be understandable if you know about sound spectrograms http://www.ee.columbia.edu/~dpwe/papers/Wang03-shazam.pdf
