They were once considered the ideal pets for families with small children, because they were unlikely to bite small children who "accidentally" hurt them by doing things like pulling on ears. Every well socialized pit bull I have ever met has been an extremely calm and friendly dog. The reason they head the dog attack statistics is they are the current fashionable dog for people who want to raise a mean dog. Before pit bulls it was bulldogs, then german shepherds, then dobermans, then rottweilers.

I have no worries about the dog playing with my children, because the dog has been raised not to be aggressive. My schnauzer/rat terrier cross seems less safe than the pit, it has given the kids warning bites (never breaking skin) when they have annoyed him too much. The pit bull loves all attention and I've never heard it even growl.

Those stats show to me that rottweilers are far more dangerous than any of the pit bull breeds - if 33% of the death by dog attacks are by "pit bull-type dogs" and 20% by rottweilers, then that means rottweilers do more human killing than any one breed that is lumped into "pit bull-type dogs", since that category contains at least a dozen breeds and every mid-sized mutt with a short muzzle. I wonder how many of the remaining deaths by dog could be lumped into a "large hound-type dog" category.
