A queue of people in the Netherlands waiting to buy milk powder right when the shop opens, before it sells out again, so they can ship it back to China.

There are now limits in place on the amount sold. But this is per transaction, so they can just queue up again and repeat the process while someone else guards the earlier purchases outside of the shop. Repeat until all the shops in town are completely out of stock. Some shops no longer put them on the shelves and require customers to ask for them. Other shops got caught selling extra powder at the back door for inflated prices.

There was such a problem of businesses not reporting sales tax (or any tax for that matter) properly that in Taiwan every legal receipt is a lottery ticket, even business-to-business invoices. This puts pressure to use those because your customers will have a demand for them I guess.

Even in Harbin where supposedly people are rustic and vigorous if someone brought me water from the cooler thing they always mixed hot with cold. If they asked and I just said "cold" they would tell me it was bad for my stomach.

They don't do MAD, no. China is estimated to have around 200 nukes. The logic is that they don't need to waste money on maintaining a massive arsenal because 200 is enough to devastate a country in a counterattack. It wouldn't wipe out the US but you'd flatten every major city and kill a hundred million people so that's enough.

At the UC I went to we had a huge influx of Chinese exchange students. Half of them didn't speak English, and couldn't so much as articulate what they wanted to eat in the dining hall let alone pass classes. They relied on the other exchange students who had a better grasp of English and basically wrote each others essays and cheated on tests together or just failed I dunno. They hung out in big Chinese groups together and didn't interact with anyone else unless they were forced to. I shared an apartment with one kid from Beijing for most of the school year. He would leave at 8am, study or do whatever he did all day, then come home at 8pm, put on his PJs, brush his teeth and go to sleep. Every single day. He had a continuous cough but didn't smoke, but I guess he grew up in Beijing so that's like smoking eight packs a day, right? He only ever said "hey, what's up" in English. He only would use the kitchen in the morning to drink a hot glass of water. Near the end of the school year one day he and his stuff were all just gone. No one missed him. No one but me, at least.
