On top of devout religious people coming to your door like Jehova's Witnesses and Mormons, you would also get visits from the "NHK man," checking to make sure you didn't have some TV they didn't know about. That said, Japan's societal reliance on politeness was so ingrained that once people found out the NHK man had no answer if you basically told him to gently caress off and die, they were kind of stumped and couldn't really do anything, as although you're legally supposed to pay, said law doesn't have teeth like the BBC one does (you can get pretty massive fines if you don't pay for BBC but own a TV).

It's still there, but it has never made money because it opened at the worst possible time and who really wants to go to some resort in Kyushu anyhow. Most of it has been shuttered, but it still limps on supported by Chinese tourists who don't know any better.
