The strange thing is that if you take out the Kane / Big Show punchline, the guys who came out looking strong were all young up-and-comers. Wyatt, Rusev, and all the Shield guys, even Big E to some extent. But only Reigns (and Rollins, though he would've met the same fate as the others were he in the Rumble obviously) can come out strong in the end. Everyone else held on for a long time and then were made to look helpless

It's too bad the Rumble match itself is traditionally last on the card cuz that title match was really very good and would have salvaged the crowd. It reminded me of the NXT Fatal Four Way main in that everybody in the match came out looking awesome, which is not something you can often say for WWE booking (understatement). Even if Cena's spots were rather perfunctory, he didn't make anybody look like poo poo

Kane is, as is often said, generally a very safe worker, is in good shape for his age, and sells the "executive brute" character pretty well. The problem with he / Show at the Rumble (one of many, at least) was that it stole the spontaneity from the ending of the match. They could still could have pulled out an exciting finish even if it was fairly obvious that Reigns is going to win it. It's like they anticipated that winning the RR wouldn't have put Reigns over enough, so they got rid of the final RR sequence, which usually generates excitement no matter what, and replaced it with a handicap match against two giant goons so that Reigns would ostensibly look even stronger coming out of it. The RR was all about Reigns, yes, but they forgot to give fans the match they wanted to see even leaving aside who they wanted to win.
