This week, on Ghostbusters Casting Couch...

J. K. Simmons is one of my favorite actors. No matter what he's in, he brings a solid, down-to-earth honesty that makes him just a joy to watch. The fact that he's just a general journeyman actor is disappointing; somebody's gotta find a good role for him to stick in. As it stands, though, he does a fantastic job helping other people give great performances, so he should shine tonight.

Hey y'all, I pretend like I know things about music sometimes, but nope. I have no earthly idea who this guy is. His music sounds right up my alley, though, so I look forward to hearing it live tonight.

Coming up...

There's no upcoming hosting announcements, so instead, in case you missed it:

This Christmas get "Shoes"

:pwn: :pwn: :pwn: :pwn: :pwn:
I've seen tonight's episode advertised as both "D'Angelo" and "D'Angelo and The Vanguard."

Some programming notes for upcoming specials...

While there is no Vintage this week, tonight at 8/7c (right before the NFL Honors awards show) will be SNL NFL Saturday, previously known as SNL Sports previously known as SNL Sports Extra. A 1 hour special highlighting the best NFL sketches evidently.

Two weeks from tonight, Vintage will again be pre-empted, this time for something never done before: A Valentine's Day special. SNL: The Valentine's Special will air at 10/9c on Saturday, February 14th.

As for regular timeslot episodes, the next three weeks are reruns, and the rerun airing on February 14th in particular is worth noting: George Carlin/Billy Preston and Janis Ian. Yes, the first show, from October 11 1975. The last time this episode was aired in the regular SNL timeslot was the week Carlin died, about 7 years ago. This is because of...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbhb8M1m100

The 40th Anniversary Special, airing Sunday February 15th. Officially scheduled to run 3 hours and 5 minutes, though it will go longer, is a live retrospective that will feature the biggest names from the show's history, wearing tuxedos and introducing the same clip packages as in retrospectives past, to a studio filled with famous people in tuxedos. This will be not unlike the 25th and 15th Anniversary specials that came before it. But this time, there's going to be something that was conspicuously absent from the celebrations in 1999 and 1989: Eddie Murphy. He hasn't set foot in 8H since the Christmas show of 1984, 30 years ago, but he said this week he was in fact returning.

Finally, I don't remember this being posted in the last thread, so I may as well put it here. A cut sketch from the Kevin Hart show that, as usual it seems this season, is funnier than most of what made it on that week.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWMlr11pJow

There's no cuts posted from last week's show, which is just as well, as they used their ace material on the air for a change.

I'm excited about this. Simmons is one of those actors who elevates everything he appears in without ever taking center stage, and I haven't even seen Whiplash yet. I still contend that his J. Jonah Jameson is the best synthesis of actor and character in any of the comic book movies -- better than Downey, Stewart, McKellan, Evans, Ledger, or Jackman.
