Completing overdue GMTs in January should also count for January's GMTs IMO. I just finished Combatting Trafficking in Persons last week and now I am on the dink list again because that was 2014 training or whatever.

I feel dirty even typing this but it's because they count GMTs from the fiscal year -- so it's overdue because it wasn't completed by September of 2014, and presumably his command was on someone's dinq list. Now that it's complete and they're ashamed of their dinq-ness, they're going to force feed the 2015 GMTs even if it means doing the same stupid training two times in a row. Just ask me how many times I had to learn about PS3 Joyner, the sad-sack sailor who can't handle being on a repair party... (aka Operational Stress Control GMT)

They should have a SAPR NKO training module that parodies Japanese dating sims, only the correct answer is to avoid sex with all the characters.

BMs are pretty cool guys. They're some of the hardest workers on the ship and get treated like poo poo but they make the best drinking buddies anywhere. Plus they get a lot of leeway for backtalk because no one expects better of them.

You'll be fine. There's no rate in the Navy that will guarantee you an easy/fun career, regardless of what anyone says. They all have their advantages and drawbacks. It's really all up to you. If you don't enjoy it, just put your head down and work hard so you can crossrate as soon as you can.
Honestly, though, if you make good friends, you will have a good time.

It's a shame how great most jobs in the navy sound considering the reality.

My detailor got a hold of me yesterday with orders to San Diego which would be great except gently caress the navy, so I suppose I get to go in and talk to the career counselor about making my prd match my adsd and let him know I'm getting out. It actually feels really weird knowing that this is the point of no return. I'd feel a lot better about getting out if I didn't have a house and two kids.

Suppose job hunting starts soon!

Man I'd take the San Diego orders that place is a paradise.

Personally I think separate wardroom messbills would make more sense if the wardroom were still allowed to buy its own food.

Mr. Nice! posted:

Then you have an issue of the wardroom getting better food than the rest of the ship. There's already enough issue in some places of elitism without tossing that in as well.

The wardroom itself is part of that same paradigm, by that logic why not eliminate the separate dining facilities altogether?
Anyway I didn't mean to argue that we should bring back wardrooms buying their own food, but rather that the separate messbills are vestigial and make no sense under the current arrangement.
In the bigger picture I don't know if the usual egalitarian principles apply in an explicitly hierarchical organization. To a certain extent, all military organizations are elitist by design.
At least it's not like the old days where you had to literally be landed gentry before you could become an officer. In principle (if not perfectly applied in real life) anyone can become an officer if they work hard enough.

Both my past ships also had First Class messes, which I think is taking things a bit too far.

Stop sucking off COs and flag officers quite as hard and hopefully it trickles down. First, fire SWOs tho.

SWO is literally the Navy. It's god's work that others don't have the balls to do it. We're making miracles happen every loving day on nothing. COCOMs are hungry idiotic political beasts in peace time and their demand signal for their "missions" literally destroys the fleets and the Sailors. SWOs have to make that poo poo happen. There's a reason why at the Pentagon there's a saying that if it's a particularly difficult task with little guidance or reference to go from "give it a SWO." We get poo poo done, it may not be pretty and people's lives might suck but WE GET poo poo DONE. All this with sequestration, reduced manning, retarded procurement, BUPERS, OPNAV, and a million other BS.

That warm fuzzy feeling you get when you're the first guy in line for the gate to turn his headlights off for the sentry and everyone behind you starts to turn theirs off, too.

Coming off the 2-7 QD watch on a Saturday morning and rolling straight into your rack after Duty Section Turnover.

When your watch is preempted by an UNREP and you're not on the UNREP watchbill and you sleep through the whole thing.
