Austin is awesome, except for the traffic on 35 (holy poo poo avoid I-35 in Austin, period).

They're close enough together (~ 200 miles, 3 hour drive, 45 minute flight) than you can make an overnight trip to either area.

Dallas is a sprawling mess, but as others have said, the tech industry has exploded in both Dallas and Austin. There's tons of poo poo to do in both Austin and Dallas; Austin's a lot more quirky in general, while you're going to run into a lot more corporate culture in Dallas. DFW also has Six Flags over Texas (there's also a Six Flags in San Antonio, which is only an hour and a half drive from Austin).

Downsides to both are the heat in the summer. Also, if you're scared of the occasional tornado watch and some awesome storms, you might want to avoid Dallas. DFW has usually had a (slightly) lower cost of living than Austin, but with Toyota moving here, housing will be skyrocketing in the far northern suburbs (Plano, Frisco, etc). Upsides if kids are in the plans, Plano, Allen, and Frisco school districts are generally very well regarded (all north suburbs that connect to each other, and Frisco ISD actually extends into north Plano), while Dallas ISD is the laughing stock of the state (Plano ISD extends into a small part of far north Dallas). We also have a fantastic light rail system on the Dallas side of DFW (supposedly the largest in the US). Austin has the main University of Texas campus, while DFW has UT Arlington, UT Dallas, UT Southwestern Medical, University of North Texas, Texas Woman's University, and plenty of others.

We do have car inspections/emissions in the major metro areas (Austin, DFW, Houston, San Antonio, El Paso), but anything OBD2 will pass the emissions part as long as it has no more than 1 readiness monitor showing not ready, and the CEL isn't lit up (anything over 24 years old is exempt from emissions). The rest is basically kicking the tires - tread depth, horn, seat belts, brakes aren't grinding, all lights work, parking brake works, gas cap seals properly, windshield isn't in horrible shape. El Paso still doesn't do OBD2 testing, nor do they do dyno testing, just an idle and 1500 RPM sniff, but you won't want to live in El Paso. Or Houston.
I wouldn't mind Texas because then I could stay with Apple and work at the corporate office there, BUT I guess my FIL wouldn't be able to get a transfer there without a paycut. Also, like you said, the heat without some sort of breeze of the ocean/large body of water to be able to go to would make it unbearable for my northern wife (and probably me too since I lived on the coast when I was in Australia and I've really gotten used to how loving cold Detroit is).

I was doing a Google street view of Old Seminole Heights and Kenwood and one thing I noticed was that everyone parks their car on the grass in the front yard... What's up with that? I remember seeing it in Australia but I usually assumed they were bogans.

That happens a lot in the older parts of some cities. The City of Dallas specifically has a law on the books banning parking on any "unimproved surface" (I've gotten a parking ticket over parking in a dirt lot next to a restaurant before thanks to that :argh: - gravel does count as "improved" if it's graded for drainage), but outside of Dallas you see it quite a bit in older neighborhoods.

When I lived in Denton, it was very common in the historic district. Even if the house had a garage, there would just be a cutout in the curb, and ruts worn into the yard from the street to the garage.

I forgot about the Western Digital I had that lasted less than an hour. Though to be fair, we (friend was driving) got in a wreck on our way back to my house after buying it. That's the day I started religiously wearing my seatbelt - I got tossed around in the back seat like a rag doll.

Bummer, it's up to 2 bad sectors now. That's the drive I just use for my porn collection and torrent downloads though. Those power on hours work out to a few weeks shy of 5 years.

Still. a HDD (and laptop in general) working at -45c is pretty impressive.

From pressing the power button to seeing the desktop is about 15 seconds ever since I upgraded the motherboard to UEFI from a traditional BIOS. It cut my overclocking ability down significantly (the BIOS swap anyway - I can't get it above 4.2 GHz anymore, while it ran at 4.5 GHz for years with the old BIOS), but the POST when it had a traditional BIOS took a good 20 seconds.

Get the portable no-ads version, or the installer version (and uncheck all the poo poo it tries to install with it), don't get the shizuku edition unless you're into anime. Also turn on SMART Reporting in your BIOS/UEFI, if it's an option. That way you'll actually get a warning during bootup if it's about to poo poo.

You all should be getting Nexus 6es anyway.

Speaking of which, I've had mine a month and a bit now and I have the following to say about it:

+++Screen - in every way (size, colour quality and resolution).
+++Speed and responsiveness - this thing is seriously fast. Might even be as fast as my 5-year old desktop
+++Speakers - Never thought I would say this, but the stereo speakers up front are actually pretty damned good.
++Video mode - 4K is pretty sweet, but hard on storage.
++Still mode - colour quality is fantastic, but it still does the epileptic Android autofocus.
+Size - in spite of what you might think, I got used to the size pretty quick and now it feels totally normal. Hint: no need for landscape typing anymore.
+Call quality - I live in a dead-zone for reception and I have no problems. Also the audio quality in-call is spooky good.

-Battery life - very good standby life (~36 hours), but screen-on life is pretty bad; 6 hours tops and far short of the 10 hours claimed.
-Price - if you're an existing Android user, there's some sticker shock. If you're used to iPrices, it's actually not bad.
-App compatibility - Old apps generally work fine, they just look stupid on the gigantic screen.
--That stupid back - the phone's back is curved, so you can't put it down on something and use it easily, because the stupid thing will wobble and spin like a drunk white girl.
--No removable storage or replaceable battery.
-----Android 5.0 - poo poo's seriously broken at the moment; no silent mode, poor battery life is probably caused entirely by OS optimisation, the keyboard is occasionally completely retarded (no, I don't want to long-press for line break/Enter), some of the user interface isn't so intuitive (too many symbols that aren't consistent), general instability.

All in all, it's a great phone, but it's let down by the state of Android 5 right now. Google is working hard to fix things in that aspect, but it could be months before they have something I would consider to be on par with 4.4/Kit-Kat.

Seminole Heights is in Tampa, that's the problem. You really don't want to live in Tampa unless you absolutely have to.

Lots of people that work in Tampa commute from St.Pete because it's a much nicer place to live.

Doesn't work on Verizon (which is the only carrier that covers a remote area I go to with 4G [or 3g] or even reliable coverage)
And no removable battery is just stupid. It isn't like it is hard, Samsung made a high end, thin, water-resistant phone with a removable battery.
The problem I guess is that everyone cares more about how "well built" a phone feels (the s6 design is because of complaints that the S5 is plastic) than actual long life (the S5, even the non-active is very durable and more importantly, you can change the battery).

Try to update your firmware, that's a known issue with the S5 out of the box. Stepdad had the same issue and took it to Samsung's local repair place, they updated it for him.

Or just switch to a 3rd party ROM and ditch TouchWiz, and enjoy far better battery life.
