There's an authenticity to being poor that just can't be faked. Sure, you can get fat and drive a lovely car, but where's the soul? Life just seems so much more interesting for poor people. I mean, growing up, I knew I'd go to a good college and land in a pretty comfortable job. But it's like what my creative writing thesis advisor told me: a story where you know the ending isn't worth telling. So much for my story! If I were poor, though, every day would be filled with uncertainty. What if I lost my job? What if I got seriously sick or injured and couldn't pay the doctor's bills? What would I do?? That, my friends, is a story. The story of poverty. And all the money in the world can't buy that.
