i'm about to release some new software that operates primarily as a daemon/web server. i dont think the software is going to be hugely popular, but i think people will actually use it. now, i believe in software customization; that's why i'm releasing my software open source. but i think that a good software provides sane, reasonable defaults so that an end user can use the software without having to worry too much about details like port selection. so: it's finally come time to choose the default port that my new software will use. i thought it would be easy, but the more i think about it, the more i can't make up my mind. there are a lot of ports to choose from, but clearly, lower port numbers are better. on the other hand, i wouldn't want to like, presume that my terrible software is important enough for a low port number, like 27 or 64. on the other hand, choosing a really high, difficult to remember port number will probably annoy people. i could try to pick a port number that's somehow culturally significant or easy to remember, but those are all taken. finally, i kind of want something meaningful, like, related to my app. who else has dealt with this? how did you solve the problem?
