So you're thinking of posting a thread. Great! Consider the following when choosing where to post it.

I want to know what goons think the worst Woody Allen movie is� or the best microbrew!

When your thread idea boils down to "Post Your Favorite (or Least Favorite) X", then you should post in PYF. Do not post these threads in GBS.
If you want more discussion on the topic than a list, consider one of the many dedicated subforums. For example, CD for Woody Allen movie discussion, or GWS for beer. You may even find the thread you had in mind already exists!

It's something personal, or embarrassing, or involves a little story about a problem I have.

Post about sex issues or relationship issues or medication issues in E/N. If your post could basically be a diary entry, definitely post in E/N. Do not post these threads in GBS.
If you have an actual medical question, consider TGD, or a real doctor.

Politics is happening RIGHT NOW! I need to post about it QUICK.

Please post in D&D. You don't have to be a debate team champion to post there. I don't know why anyone thinks this.

ADTRW is the dedicated anime forum. Do not post anime anywhere in GBS.

Pet Island used to be the craziest place on the forums but it's for normal people now, and not just about pets.

I put about nine seconds of thought into my post, or it doesn't even matter what I post but I need to post a thread.

You should post your thread in BYOB. You don't have to put a ton of effort into a GBS thread, but you have to put in a little.

I want to post about the Forums themselves.

QCS is a forum for constructive criticism about the SA Forums, where every post will be read by at least one admin. Please don't "post about posting" anywhere else, except maybe FYAD or BYOB where it doesn't matter.

You can post it in FYAD then, but your thread better be funny! If it's not legitimate feedback and it's not even funny, your meta-thread isn't worth posting at all.

Don't post callout/shoutout/namedrop threads. Definitely do not post them in GBS.
If you really have personal issues with someone that you both want to work out in a public venue, an admin or E/N mod would be happy to post a joint E/N thread for you both.
If you just want to flame the freakin heck out of some n00blet who peeves you right the frig off, flamewars are fully one-half of FYAD's mission statement. But again, it better be funny.
In general, don't post anyone's personal information anywhere, ever. You won't get in trouble for posting your own information, but don't do that either, you'll regret it someday and the thread will be archived so you won't even be able to edit it out.

Don't post non-worksafe images in GBS at all, but if you post them in spoiler tags, I'm going to kill you. Who started that stupid fad??

You should post it in GBS! There's no specific definition of what belongs in the General forum, but there's no shortage of thread topics that don't really fit anywhere else. Check out GBS or the Comedy Goldmine and see for yourself! Enjoy
