The pawsting business is tough work.
In 2000 AD, the world ended.

Fifteen years later, things get worse.

COMING THIS SUMMER: DEPRESSED TEENAGERS IN ROBOTS

It's an Evangelion game, run in Atomic Robo and set in the ruins of Boston.

Those other guys in Japan? We don't care about them. Nothing exciting happens to Tokyo-3 this time. This one's set around NERV 1st Branch.

Boston got wrecked by Second Impact, of course. But the city's intellectual capital and cultural influence were too much to just discard in aftermath of Second Impact. And besides, now that the city's flooded, there's plenty of additional port space!

Well, you take it where you can get it sometimes.

NERV 1st Branch was established with what was left of MIT, BU, and the parts of Harvard that were still too poor to pick up and escape the city's drowning. Along with the experimental MAGI-04, this means that First Branch is the research hub of NERV, pushing the cutting edge of mankind's understanding of the recent apocalypse into places they probably shouldn't go.

With the rising of the seas following Antarctica's big melt, the old downtown core is deep beneath the waves - wags making jokes about Watertown tend to have a bad time of things in the city. First Branch is under the sea, too, as for once in its existence, the Big Dig infrastructure proved useful. The Bunker Hill Bridge ferry terminal is First Branch's primary point of contact with the outside world, and the primary launch site for its EVA units.

Much of the city has relocated to the shores of old I-95. The port is booming these days, drawing surface traffic and running cargo airships out of the old skyscrapers. The Sox haven't won a series in fifteen years, but with the harsher winters these days, the Bruins are doing well. Being from New York continues to be a capital offense.

-

Because I refuse to let Ettin retain the title of biggest anime, it's an Eva game! You could make a sad teenager who pilots a giant robot that may or may not be the inhuman fusion of a giant alien and a Freudian abstraction, or you could be a sad adult who has to watch over the pilots and deal with your own emotional wreckage. You can't be the Branch director, but beyond that, I'm open to suggestions. Ask any questions that come to mind.

I would also like all applicants to come up with one thing their character believes to be true about EVAs, NERV, Angels, or the city of Boston.

Apps close next Monday the 18th at 12:01 AM, EST. That's GMT-5 for you foreign types.

ADDENDA

Clarification: You can't be the Branch's head. You can be Ops Director, Head of Research, whatever. Just make sure you can compete with a bunch of insane teenagers piloting building-sized robots.

Stress: As written, Atomic Robo's stress rules are dumb. You get seven boxes to divide between Mental and Physical stress tracks. Ignore the rest of it.

Want to pilot an EVA? Read this post!

Franklin Wilson

"Hey, hey! Line up, please. Here's your autograph. I'd frame that, if I were you.

Being named after two presidents of the USA wasn't enough for Franklin Wilson, nor was being the son of movie star and acclaimed TV actor Tommy Wilson. Now he is the single most marketed and commercialized EVA pilot in the Western Hemisphere.

Although it looked as if he was to follow in his father's footsteps as an actor, Franklin's first performance in a propaganda movie sponsored by NERV got him noticed by operatives, who saw he displayed characteristics that would make him an ideal pilot. After a few tests (arranged at great expense), results came back positive. However, Tommy Wilson had more ideas, and approached NERV with a deal. 1st Branch needed cash, Tommy made it, and Franklin could make it for them.

Now Franklin, along with being the pilot of an EVA unit, is also the face of NERV 1st Branch to the general public. Toys, magazines, cartoons and posters are adorned with his visage and the form of his EVA. He markets hope and security to the youth of today, his public appearances during times of crisis helping the citizens of New Boston stay calm and under control. The revenue from his merchandising brings 1st branch - and the Wilson estate - a considerable amount of income, which they would sorely miss otherwise.

Unfortunately, the deal includes Franklin.

Franklin has inherited the best and worst of his father's ideals and lifestyle. Arrogant, narcissistic and lacking any kind of self-awareness, Franklin buys into his own marketing machine as much as the children on the street. In his mind, he's going to save the world, and everyone else is there to help him achieve that goal. Although he is extroverted, friendly to his peers and generally non-confrontational, he is hostile to anything that misrepresents him or affects his public image, which has earned him reprimands on more than one occasion. On the bright side, he knows where the best parties are and where to get ahold of things that aren't so common after Second Impact, so having him as a friend will at least make your weekends interesting.

Franklin's dreadful personality does have one advantage - he does not take the threat of the Angels at all seriously, and is mostly unafraid during battle, although he has shown signs of stress in difficult situations. Whilst his mental stability can be questioned, his fortitude cannot, which makes him ideal to pilot an EVA.

EVA Morningstar

Based on the successful EVA prototype from NERV Japan, EVA Morningstar is Franklin's EVA, and is linked to him in his media franchise. Morningstar carries a modified super-grade anti-ballistics shield, and its role in battle is usually battlefield control and defensive warfare, using the shield to defend its allies and control the fight. Also, you can buy a figure of it for $59.99. The Christmas hit of the year!

Once per turn, you can Tribute 1 WATER monster you control (except this card) to Special Summon 1 WATER monster from your hand. The monster Special Summoned by this effect is destroyed if "Raging Eria" is removed from your side of the field.
Dr. Johanna "Jenny" Laboe

"Hello class! I'm Doctor Johanna Laboe, you can call me Dr. Laboe or Johanna, whichever's fine. I'm going to be your biology teacher this year, and I'm also handling chemistry for some of the other grades. I got my M.D. from BU just before the whole you-know-what happened, so I can assure you that I've got an excellent handle on biology. Anyway, you all should have the books loaded on your tablets, so let's dive right in to chapter seven and get a very general overview of ATP and the Krebs cycle. Once we've got an idea of where we're headed, we'll be going back to a review of basic chemistry next week, followed by some broader O-chem, and we'll progress from there into cell structure and overall animal function. Hopefully we'll be back on ATP properly before Christmas break!"

Charlotte O'Rinn was an amazing woman. A doctor in the early 60's, O'Rinn headed an impressive variety of neurological studies, developing several treatments for mental illnesses usually considered lost causes over her career. She met a Dr. Richard Laboe, who had a similar focus, and they had a mildly scandalous affair, resulting in little Jenny. When Jenny was seven, Charlotte realized that the variety of little mistakes and slip-ups she'd been making were the signs of early-onset Alzheimer's. Charlotte didn't need to say much to Richard; they both knew exactly how things would progress, and both had always been a little detached when dealing with illness.
With Jenny, Charlotte chose to simply and slowly explain the situation to her, giving her an odd simplified version of a psychology education over a few years, with her own illness and symptoms as a 'case study.' By the time Jenny developed a real and visceral understanding of what this all meant in terms of losing her, she'd come to accept the situation in her own way, and by the time she reached high school, she had a solid understanding of biology and psychiatry, and a mother in bed at a hospital who didn't recognize her face, but smiled anyway.

Jenny went through premed and medical school at Boston University, following in her parents' footsteps. Her father, ever distant, had retreated to his own studies following Charlotte's death, but Jenny had always done things for herself, and didn't care. She didn't take any particular interest in Alzheimer's beyond what was normal for study as a student going into psychiatry; her first big term paper was on schizophrenia, and she was in the middle of a study on intermittent explosive disorder as her future thesis when the Second Impact happened and everything went to hell.
Johanna went through her equivalent of a residency as a therapist and psychiatrist for NERV in the following years, becoming fairly adept at handling the PTSD and depression that ran rampant through the organization.
And, now that NERV's finally putting the EVA plan into action, she's being assigned as the primary councilor and therapist for the kids. Which will probably be a piece of cake, let me tell you.

quote:

Dr. Johanna Laboe
Concept - Apparently Well-Adjusted Psychiatrist
Aspects - Designated Minesweeper, Unstressed Prodigy, Why Fight If You Can Chat?, Jenny's a Girl's Name

Modes - Therapy (Empathy, Notice, Rapport, Science: Psychotherapy, Will [7]) +3, Science (Notice (F), Will (F), Science (Psychotherapy (F))) +2, Banter (Contacts, Deceive, Empathy (F), Provoke, Rapport (F), Will (S)) +1

Empathy +5
Notice +5
Rapport +5
Will +5
Psychotherapy +5
Deceive +3
Science +2
Contacts +1
Provoke +1

P Stress - 2
M Stress - 5

Stunts
Five Second Diagnosis - Can use Empathy to read a person's emotional state, psychological problems, and breaking points with minimal, fleeting interaction.
Keep Calm and Duck - +2 to Athletics to get to cover in a firefight or other disaster.
Razortongue - Use Empathy in place of Provoke to inflict mental harm.

Therapy - Designated Minesweeper
Johanna has two responsibilities. First and foremost, she needs to keep the kids fighting. Ideally, this should involve helping them manage stress in healthy ways, maintain positive outlooks, form a rapport with the other pilots, and at least not outright hate NERV and the commanders. That said, none of those are strictly part of her primary responsibility. If it's clear that those ideal goals aren't achievable in the timescale set by the Angels, she still needs to keep the pilots in the EVAs, fighting, using whatever means necessary. And, failing all that, she needs to be aware of when the kids are reaching a breaking point, so that alternatives can be prepared. Her second responsibility is to maximize the pilot's synchronization rate. This is much more vague, but initial tests seem to indicate positive correlations with deep attachment to an absent parental figure, as well as stunted social ability and isolation.
Overall, pretty unethical stuff.

Science - Unstressed Prodigy
Jenny probably could've been one of those neurotic child prodigies, going into college early and participating in piano concerts and generally living through hell, but her mother specifically avoided anything like that, and her father never particularly cared, so Johanna instead went through schooling easily and at a normal pace. She wasn't particularly bored; she just finished homework in class and doodled, and spent long days in the library, and found university 'refreshingly interesting' while her classmates were tearing their hair out. She finds her work now a little bit dull, stressful in the wrong ways, but picks up sciences easily, and understands a fair bit of the neurological structure of the EVAs and the Magi supercomputer. However, she sometimes finds the situation irritating--she could understand them all fully, if she'd spent her time as a student more efficiently and gone deeper into the biology, and she's likely to bite off more than she can chew if something needs fixing.

Banter - Why Fight If You Can Chat?
Despite working in a paramilitary organization, Johanna's never fired a gun, and she's certainly never had to punch someone or otherwise found herself in real danger. She did some sports, and isn't necessarily out of shape, but she doesn't have any of the combat training her patients do. To an extent, she's proud of this, that she's never had to, but that's not that surprising, and she's getting a creeping feeling that it's going to be an issue relatively soon.

Omega - Jenny's a Girl's Name
Johanna is forty now. Her mother started having Alheimer's when she was fifty, and there are some faint indicators that it was hereditary, and that Johanna's got maybe fifteen years, twenty max, before she's gone completely. She's intimately familiar with how the brain works, how it can break, how people can react to it, and lately Johanna's been dwelling on that creeping mortality and a general feeling that she's wasted her life.
Even into her thirties, Johanna dressed 'casually,' told people to call her Jenny, and generally acted like a twenty-something grad. She's... stopped doing that. She's stopped doing a lot of things that seem childish now.
And a part of her really, really hopes that this is all going to be worth it, that these kids are actually going to be the ones responsible for saving the world. Because otherwise she's just been settling into a long pointless nothing.

~~~
One thing I know? Well, uh, the EVAs are living things, not robots. They've got brains of a sort, or at least a neurological system, that links up with the pilots. Part of it is the whole sensory feedback mechanism, but there's also a control circuit that requires part of the pilot's brain to be tuned in a specific way, which in practice requires them to be, you know, children, and fit a certain psychological profile.
Sable Halcyon is a model pilot, having started her service at age 10 and continuing from there. The child's experience and emotion control treatment have allowed for a greater degree of control over themselves in combat situations. Subject was obtained at the age of 10 and subject to mental reprogramming procedures to remove childhood memories and replace them with those more suitable for an EVA pilot. Subject has been quoted stating "NERV is the only place worth defending. The world outside of the facility is unsafe, savage and will not accept me." Subject was additionally placed on a regular schedule of depressant dosages to ensure subject will maintain perfect synchronization and composure throughout training and operation.
WARNING: Subject must always receive their (3) doses of medication daily via either A) syringe delivery to jugular vein in neck, or B) capsule placed within and consumed via liquid medium (Subject prefers this method, and has scheduled a "tea time" activity to accommodate this. Subject remains unaware of the exact effects of the medication.). Failure to do so may result in greater tendencies towards emotional instability, self-destructive behavior and an unhealthy increase in physical strength, complicating attempts to restrain the subject. Recommend high-voltage shock to sedate rampaging subject.
Subject occasionally questions meaning behind inability to read own file. Attempts to curb such behavior through further treatments have met with temporary success, however, in spite of repeated wipes of said memory, subject's curiosity continues to lead to a desire to learn more about themselves. Concession of clearance to read sanitized related files has been made. If confronted by subject over this topic, recommended course of action is to change subject. If subject continues to redirect topic back to this line of discussion, attempt to end conversation as swiftly as possible, as her ability to draw information across an extended conversation is not to be underestimated. In any case, report such behaviors to a superior.
Combat capabilities of the subject have been noted to be "excellent". Subject shows innate familiarity with the EVA units' systems, showing improved performance with their use. In addition, subject has been noted to prefer rapidly approaching an enemy unit and establishing a firm hold before delivering a precision strike with a progressive knife. Strategy has been noted for its practicality and success rate, albeit at the risk of extreme external damage to the arm units in order to maintain such a hold. Subject has failed to take medication prior to entering EVA unit in the past. Subject's strategy altered significantly, attempting to neutralize the Angel unit by first tearing apart its individual components before shattering the core with the EVA's fists.
Social interactions between the subject and fellow staff has intentionally been kept to a minimum to allow for simple and discreet modification of subject's memory. Subject has been noted to have an intense desire to "make friends". In addition, subject has shown great desire to acquire "mentor figure" role among fellow pilots. Behavior suggests a deep-seated loneliness and need for human interaction. It is currently under debate whether subject should be given more or less time to interact with others. Teamwork and synergy may increase, but control over the subject may decrease and its self-awareness increase to an unsafe level.
"If I can have a relaxed, lengthy conversation with someone, I can get them to divulge something they wouldn't otherwise."
Dylan James
"Listen, I got two rules I live by. Number one is gently caress the Yankees. And number two is don't gently caress with me. And I think you're tryin' to gently caress with me right now."
High Concept: Prep School Brat
ST. THOMAS PREPARATORY SCHOOL FOR YOUNG MEN
STUDENT RECORD
Dylan James
Age: 15
DOB: 9/15/2000
Hometown: Boston, MA
Student fits the definition of "delinquent." In his two years at this school, the student has wreaked as much havoc as humanly possible. His disciplinary transgressions include truancy, disrespecting staff, and violence against other students. It is hard not to compare him to his older brother Marcus, an alumnus of St. Thomas and a model student, though he violently resists such comparisons. Student has shown a callous disrespect for this institution and the people who run it.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Expulsion
STUDENT UPDATE: NERV has requested custody of the student, and after a discussion with the student's mother, he has been removed from the student roster.
Banter: Actually Pretty Popular
Despite his delinquency, student enjoys some degree of respect among the student body due to a perceived sense of "fighting back" against the faculty. Student exudes a charisma that causes him to make friends easily. However, the quality of the company student keeps has been brought into question as a negative influence on his behavior.
Action: Don't Piss Me Off
Student possesses a strong, if misplaced, sense of justice. Many of his fights have been against students that were bullying other students. Student also possesses an anger problem that may drive him to violent fits. Recommended that faculty take care around student as to avoid a fit. Student is currently seeing a therapist off-campus.
Intrigue: Lie My Way Out Of A Paper Bag
Student is a habitual liar, and unfortunately quite good at it. Faculty has wisened up to his deception, but he is still able to coerce other students into doing what he wishes. New faculty members are advised to not take everything student says at face value until they learn his tells.
Omega: Loves His Mom
The student's father died when he was young and the student was raised by his mother. The lack of a paternal figure is a possible factor in his delinquency, however, the student shows great love and respect for his mother. Threatening the student with parental notification has been an effective tool in shutting down his transgressions.
+5: Provoke
+4: Athletics, Contacts, Deceive
+3: Empathy, Notice, Rapport, Will
+2: Combat, Physique, Vehicles
+1: Burglary, Stealth
PStress: OOOO
MStress: OOO
Stunts:
You Got A loving Problem?: Once a session, use Provoke in place of Empathy. Because that's what Dylan usually resorts to.
I Got A Guy: Dylan can spend a Fate Point to have a contact he can consult about a current subject.
Don't Let Them See Me: When trying to stay out of trouble, Dylan gets a +2 to Stealth.
What I Know
"Those Angels...aren't they like aliens or some poo poo? Seems kinda pretentious to call 'em something like Angels. Fuckin'....moon men or something, I dunno. Glipglops. I got enough Bible poo poo at school."
Exact knowledge of the show is definitely not required, 'cause this is going to be a different set of characters and plots. Having some background probably isn't a bad idea, though, just so you know what you're getting into and what the setting's like.
You can get a PDF here or a hard copy here or at your local game shop. It's a pretty simple system - if you can count between negative 4 and positive 4, you can play FATE-based games.
The big thing that trips up new folks, and I'm glad you reminded me about this, is the way stress is calculated. Ignore what it tells you in the book, because it's inexplicably badly written. You get seven stress boxes to divvy up between Mental and Physical Stress. I'll put this in the OP.
Before I get into my concept, how feasible is it to make a character that's actually, like, a squad of dudes? Basically, they're the dudes who protect civilians and fight whatever horrible parasites that drop off the Anegls this time, and generally clean up after the dumb kids in the EVAs when they make a mess. There'd be a face character that does most of the work but there'd be mechanics or stunts to model having a squad. The Squad-Based Action section in the Fate Core rules isn't quite what I'm looking for - I'm more thinking the Buddy from Strike or something. Is this too much?
It's not automatically a bad idea, but my first impulse is that the squad stuff is probably more the tool of the Ops Director than an independent character.
My concern with having someone that far into the B-cast, and this applies to Bendigeidfran's pitch too, is that I don't want to fragment the party too much. If this were a face-to-face game, it wouldn't be that big of a deal to put everyone else on hold. But with PbP, I'm concerned that a huge level of disconnect between the Eva pilots and The Other Guys could basically lead to two different games being run in the same thread, with plot and posting times diverging in ever-increasing amounts as time goes on.
So, if your heart's really set on it, go for it. It's definitely a cool concept, but I'll be leaning on you extra hard to keep posting and to stay with the pace of the rest of the game.
Curses from all directions!
Hannah Asagiri
"Don't worry! We'll make it through!"
Hannah & The World
Hannah is best known for her role as the foremost defender of the NERV Second Branch in Nevada, possessing the highest success rate against Angel incursions in North America. Her EVA unit was featured on a special edition of LIFE, the first printed since the Second Impact. Although the newsreel footage of her battles lend credit to her abilities and determined nature, the way she herself has been portrayed is not exactly true. In all but her most recent victory against the Angels that she had experienced at the Nevada installation, Hannah has actually been killed in action every time. Video of the Hannah most recently captured outside of her Evangelion is actually that of the fourth such individual.
Nevertheless, in spite of her costly and questionable successes, Hannah appears to possess a decidedly cheerful and optimistic demeanor by nature. Although media reports portray her as fiercely strong and capable, in person Hannah is unabashedly kind, irritatingly humble, and surprisingly deferential. Already research has begun on her successor at NERV-1st, eager to build upon the landmark success of actually both winning -and- surviving battle with an Angel. With the defense systems of NERV-2nd having been significantly bolstered by scores of amazing new weapons that the Boston MAGI trio had 66.6% faith in, coupled with a new EVA coming online there shortly, and (most importantly) to satisfy conditions set down in the Dead Sea Scrolls, this "successful" Hannah has been recalled to Boston, to be closer to the Heart of Paradigm, where she might be more purely improved upon.
As the gravity of events shift toward Boston and draw the attention of the Angels there, in a battle where any cost is acceptable when survival is on the line, having an extra pilot present, an experienced pilot no less, is not such a bad thing.
Hannah Herself
Always looking towards the future, Hannah has never spent much time dwelling on the past. When asked questions about her youth, her answers have tended to vary between vague and evasive. Detailed records always reinforce her stories, but it has been noted (and then quietly subdued) that there is a lack of corroborating evidence to further lend credit to Hannah's claims. With the most honest of smiles, Hannah encourages people not to worry about the past, citing that there are more important things both today and in the future that require everyone's attention.
Hannah appears share some measure of Japanese heritage, but she has had an unabashedly American upbringing. If pressed, she would tell you that her mother was a Japanese national who died in the Second Impact, and that she was raised by her father in Wyoming. Brief interactions with staff from NERV in Tokyo-3, who have made assumptions based purely on her appearance, have resulted in more than one comical misunderstanding. Hannah can't speak a lick of Japanese.
Those who have been around her long enough have picked up on the fact that she's surprisingly clumsy when it comes to interacting with other people. Raised in a controlled, strict, and decidedly sterile environment, this wider world that she's been introduced to is exciting and new to her, and she just as she is encouraging and optimistic, so too does she trust in the notion that those around her think in a similar fashion.
When locked deep inside an entry plug, Hannah is utterly given over entirely to the cause of humanity's defense. This is where the image of her being a hero for all humanity gains its shred of truth. She is good, and she is strong, and she is fierce. She never backs down, no matter how dire the situation might be and always seems to pull through in the end. (Even if she might be killed in the process.) But, above all else, Hannah unquestioningly follows the orders issued to her by her commanding officer. In a fight for humanity's survival, gone is the cheerful girl and in her place emerges the dedicated young woman.
Physical Stress: OOO
Mental Stress: OOOO
Concept Aspect: Experimental Clone Pilot
Sample Invoke: Her presence is ignored by NERV command because she is not considered a security risk.
Sample Compel: "It is time for more... experiments."
(+3) EVA Pilot: Little Miss Perfect*
Hannah is designed to be better at the things NERV needs her to be better at. Everything else is a secondary concern, or of absolutely no concern at all. She's an impressive technical achievement, really. But at the same time, to those in the military there's something eerie about her competence and determination, and to those on the outside the way she does things can be frustrating, off-putting, and sometimes seem even outright weird.
Sample Invoke: To create an opening or opportunity for her allies to exploit.
Sample Compel: Order Hannah do something other deployed pilots won't do.
Skills: Athletics, Combat, Notice, Physique, Tactics, Vehicles, Will (9 Points)
(+2) Operant Conditioning: If I Could Actually Be Me, I Would
Cheerful, outgoing, and optimistic could all be used to sum up Hannah. She wants to be helpful and supportive of those around her, and by all accounts and actions she is genuine and means well. But at the same time, the advice she would happily counsel isn't advice she herself would follow. She's quick to be interested, engaged, and share in the lives of others but never actually shares anything about her own life in return. If pressed on the subject, she has little choice but to tell lies. Even to those she's friends with.
Sample Invoke: Make people forget she's an eerie death-machine pilot for a while.
Sample Compel: Be called to account for damage/casualties she's either directly or indirectly responsible for.
Skills: Contacts, Deceive, Empathy, Notice, Rapport, Will (8 Points)
(+1) Manufactured Being: This Is What I Was Born To Do
Hannah knows what she is, and actually seems to be quite at peace with it. She even seems happy about her role, believing that through her actions she's making the world a better place. It doesn't make her reckless in battle, but she is selfless. Her true origin is something she might actually be ashamed of. It's something she actually feels she needs to keep hidden from those who don't already know. Even if she hadn't been ordered to do so, it's a truth she'd rather not burden anyone with.
Skills: Athletics, Combat, Notice, Stealth, Vehicles, Will (10 Points)
Sample Invoke: Forcing a companion out of the path of mortal danger, putting herself at risk instead.
Sample Compel: Hannah misses out on something interesting/fun on account of mysterious clone duties.
Omega: Anyway You Splice It, You Can't Take The Human Out Of The Clone
Skills:
+5: Notice, Will
+4: Athletics, Combat, Vehicles,
+3: Physique, Tactics
+2: Contacts, Deceive, Empathy, Rapport
+1: Stealth
(3 Points left. Skills conquered, I think.)
Stunts:
Signature Aspect: *Little Miss Perfect
Field Savant: +2 to create an advantage using Combat against an opponent who's AT Field has already mitigated at least one attack.
Cold Logic: Once per session, Hanna may use Will in place of Provoke.
Mega-Stunt:
Spear of Unknown Origin (3 benefits)
Function: This gargantuan weapon was recently transferred to NERV-1st from Golgotha Base. It is supposedly a weapon of unparalleled power.
Flaw: Hannah is forbidden to use it without the consent of her Operational Commander or other higher-ranking NERV superiors.
Trumpet of the Jubile: Weapon:4, or Weapon:6 but at a cost
Covenant: Attacks with this weapon that succeed are instead considered to have succeeded with style.
(I went with this keeping in line with Gorbash's question about supplementing an EVA with character Stunts. If this is in any way problematic, I can drop it in a heartbeat.)
Six benefits total! So one point into the GM pool!
EVA Megastunt Choice:
Option 2. Hannah didn't select her EVA Unit. It was selected for her based on criteria she wasn't privy to and probably wouldn't have understood anyhow! But she has faith that it wouldn't have been chosen for her if she weren't suited for it in the first place.
Hannah Holds This Truth To Be Self-Evident:
I was originally born in Boston, but I don't really remember anything of it from then. I've mostly served in Nevada, and I was briefly in Tokyo-3 for some testing, and one other NERV base where I wasn't really sure where I was, but none of them were as diverse, exciting, and lively as Boston. Not that it didn't suffer because of the Second Impact, but compared to all the other places on the east coast, it maybe got a little lucky? Boston is like the hub for the whole continent now, I think. Doesn't matter if it's coming or going, everything imaginable passes through here.
K.F: Mrs. Ri- Srinidhi, each EVA is the product of billions of dollars of research capital and the full dedication of American intelligence in cooperation with NERV. Their position on standby is absolutely necessary for Boston's safety. We're concerned that this is...a suboptimal use of resources.
S.RN: Ah-ha, I got ya. Just hear me out for a sec. For any other machine you'd be right. But an EVA's not like that; a pilot needs to interface with the muscle engines pretty regularly to get the high-level performance out. And you need cooperation and focus to level output for the synchronization systems. Plus the stress data is worth its weight in diamonds.
K.F: But why basketball, specifically? We have a training field that would make Special Forces green with envy.
Srinidhi is the friendly "chief" of Nerv-1's Logistics branch. Born in Worcester seven years prior to Second Impact, she's lived most of her life under the shadow of her genius father Dr. Narayan. It seemed fated that she'd follow in his scientific footsteps. But she reached for the toolbox instead of the chemistry sets, chose the jersey over the lab-coat. Her mother was happy that Srinidhi had found things she loved. Her dad never said much about anything, though Srinidhi still cherishes the few games they played together.
Second Impact struck. The years that followed were not kind. Dr. Narayan was recruited by a group known as “Gehirn”, and saw his daughter less and less. Meanwhile her mother was busy trying to keep their family afloat after so many necessities sank into the sea. Srinidhi effectively raised herself during the chaos. Strong, clever, and mechanically skilled, she developed a knack for finding food and supplies where no one else thought to look. Many of the wandering “children of the Impact” looked to her as a leader in dark times.
Eventually the great aid fleets flew overhead and the country started to rebuild itself. Gehirn evolved into Nerv and effectively purchased what remained of Boston. By this time her parents had agreed to a separation: her mother retook her maiden name and her father devoted himself even more to his research. As Srinidhi reached adulthood she began to wonder what it was her father had spent so much time looking for. Part of her hated what he’d done. But she felt in her heart that he was a kind man, someone who’d sacrificed for the greater good. That belief had kept her going through the long night of Second Impact. And so she joined Nerv.
She’s accomplished a lot in her years there: her daring flights into anti-Angel operations, her oddly intuitive breakthroughs in Eva maintenance, her ability to keep spirits up through the grueling rhythm of combat and inactivity. The Branch Director trusts her enough to “allow her supervision over the pilots' social well-being”. As far as the upper echelons of Nerv know, Srinidhi is a model member of the staff. But she has other plans. Her father's mysterious disappearance from Nerv records has convinced her that the organization is not what it claims to be. And the undercurrent of brainwashing in her "supervision guidelines" disgusts her. For now, she'll do her best by the pilots she's been entrusted. Someday, she tells herself, she'll tackle the conspiracy that sleeps beneath Boston harbor.
Concept: Gentle Supervisor With A Grudge
Sample Invoke: Can get favors and gifts for the pilots under her care.
Sample Compel: Loses her temper to defend others from NERV's authority.
(+3) Supply Chief: Delivery in 1.11 Minutes or Less
Sample Invoke: Bring weapons in the nick of time.
Sample Compel: Three things are certain: death, taxes, and critical overheating.
(+2) Banter: NERV's Point Guard
Contacts, Deceive, Empathy, Provoke, Rapport, Will - 9 points
Sample Invoke: Direct multiple EVAs at once to follow through with the game plan.
Sample Compel: Hearing what an EVA pilot hears is no picnic.
Actually, now I'm curious. I know the 14-year-old pilots can be as out there as you please (clones, angel-human hybrid thingies, etc.) but how grounded or sci-fi-ey do you want the adult support characters to be? The reason I ask is that reading Bahamut's concept reminded me of Hostile Waters and how your main units were soldiers who'd died the last war and had their minds preserved digitally. And having the controller/AWACS figure be someone who's legally dead but had his mind digitized somehow (Angel shenanigans?) seems like an interesting way to get the desired mood ("We're sending our children and our dead to fight now?!") but also might be a bit too Eclipse Phase for NGE.
The pawsting business is tough work.
Off the cuff, that is a thing in Eva already. Spoilers, I guess?
At least one if not all of the MAGI supercomputers are running multiple forks of the designer's mind, who, y'know, did the murder-suicide-"suicide" thing before the machines were completed. 'course, this means if you're in it for niche protection, that makes you the second digital ghost hanging around NERV.
Hard to say in regards to the general idea. Eva's definitely more on the scientific mysticism side, versus hard SF or space opera. You're talking about a show where there's a metricized readout of the human soul. On the flip side, there's hyperscience poo poo all over the place, like the theoretical physics concept swallowing Shinji whole.
In more practical terms, I'm a little wary from just what you've mentioned, although I may be reading past you. I'm a little hesitant to recommend a PC type that's potentially without a body - having something immediate and squishy to threaten is kind of a valuable asset in action storytelling. Also, potential Other Guys problems - what's your character doing while the pilots are going to school or whatever and there aren't Angels attacking?
TLDR: could work, interesting idea, maybe needs some refinement from both of us.
:siren: EVA PILOTS PAY ATTENTION TO THIS
I've been asked, and it can't hurt to put this in writing. Your EVA unit will be a hardware megastunt, with some additional handwaving to deal with scale.
Now, you can take one of two options.
One, you can design your own stunt package and pay for it out of your normal budget. That way you get to pick and customize your own EVA.
Option two, I build you an equivalent stunt package, which may or may not have features you want, and may or may not have downsides. It will, however, cost you nothing.
You'll see...
Aaron Michaels
(Angelic Name: Zadkiel)
"Psalms 103:20 - Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word."
Concept: Angel in Human Form
Do you know who I am? No, I don't mean just as a pilot. I mean who I am. You know what I mean, don't you?
Yes, I'm an Angel. Like those big things that attack the city all the time. You must be quite observant, if you knew that. It's a big secret. Not many people are supposed to know about it. Not even my fellow pilots. Now, I bet you're wondering... why am I here? Me, an Angel, working with these people who fight and murder these great beasts. That's a good question.
The simple answer is... I've been here for as long as I remember. Maybe I was born here. I don't know. But that's not the important answer -- that just answers how I got here, but not Why. But if I had to answer Why, well... I don't think I could tell you. I mean, why are Angels here in the first place? Or, for that matter, why is Man? God created them both, did he not? And the Earth, and the Second Impact, and all that. It's His Plan. The natural cycle. Just as things are born and just as things blossom, do things whither and things die.
So... that must mean that my being here is a part of His Plan, doesn't it? Just as Humans were put on Earth for a specific purpose, and just as Angels were sent to Earth for a specific purpose, I must be here for a specific purpose, right?
(+3) Angel: A Huge Security Risk
The higher-ups at NERV don't trust me at all. I suppose that's understandable. We are supposed to be fighting Angels, aren't we? And if I'm an Angel, doesn't that mean I'm like our 'enemy'? If you think cynically and logically, I suppose, it makes sense.
But it's pretty closed-minded, isn't it? Do they really think I'm that bad?
(+2) Banter: Please, Don't Be Sad! Whatever You Do, Don't Be Sad!
Tell me, what do you think of people? In general. Also specifically. Everybody you know. How do you feel about them? They're precious to you, aren't they?
I think people are precious. Not that I know many people. But for the most part I think I like them. There's just something about the way they... Oh, I don't know, feel about things. Have you ever just stopped and thought about the range of emotions the average person feels throughout the day? Joy, curiosity, frustration, boredom, and so on. There's just a whole world sealed within the human soul.
But... It can be real painful sometimes, can't it? Sometimes the precious fruit of the soul can just turn sour and painful. You've been there, right? The depths of despair. That which crushes the soul and kills the spirit. It's really just...
Awful! Absolutely awful! I can't stand it! If the joy of Humanity is the most beautiful thing in the world, their despair is the anti-beautiful. It's the horror of the world! If there's one thing that will break humanity, surely it will be this! Oh, people, can't you see what despair just does to you?! No, of course you can! That's what fuels it in the first place! That's what makes it so completely AWFUL! When I see people in the depths of sadness, I just want to...! I just want to...!
...
Oh, I'm sorry. I acted out there. I'm normally not like that. I really love people, but I just want them to be happy. Or any of the other whole big wide spectrums of emotions that you people feel. But there's something about sadness that just... gets me. I don't want to see people sad. If they're sad, I want to help them. To really, really, help them. Maybe be the guardian Angel that they really need in their lives. To be the Hope in their lives.
But that doesn't always work. And if it doesn't work, oh does it pain me....
(+1) Eva Pilot: I'm Not Here To Kill Angels, I'm Here To Save People
Angels aren't just monsters. They're creatures created by God. Now, they destroy cities and they kill people, so it's understandable that most people think of them as monsters... but that's just not right.
I think they're here to... teach humanity a lesson of some kind. Put them through trials and tribulations. Something like that. I'm not sure.
Now, I'm not saying that I don't think that humanity should defend themselves from the Angels, but... maybe they're a bit more aggressive than they should be. So far the Angels have all been violent, but will they always be? Will things always be so simple?
Omega: God's Voice Tells Me To...
I think I hear Him sometimes. Whispers, mostly.
He has a plan in store for me. I don't know what it is, but I can feel it. When he needs me, I will be there for Him.
Classified Marduk Institute Report on Legion posted:
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
In summary, the following facts can be surmised regarding the Dstl mass children manufacturing project, codenamed Legion, and its subsequent failure.
  1. The intent was to find a way to mass-produce children capable of piloting Evangelion units. While the British government does not have enough Evangelion units to even remotely justify such a project for its own usage, it seems likely that this was more of a political maneuver. Having a ready supply of pilot-ready children would allow them to push the argument against the use of civilian pilots, and in turn dominate the upbringing and indoctrination of said pilots. This would fit with their desire to mass-produce Evangelion units themselves.
  2. The fact that the groundwork for Legion was laid down before the Second Impact implies that the Dstl was likely infiltrated or manipulated by SEELE in accordance with their ideology. While it seems unlikely they were an outright pawn, it is likely that SEELE leaked selective information to the British government to meet their demands.
  3. Legion created artificial humans using cloning and genetic variation therapy, then indoctrinated them with a mixture of classical British jingoism and military-espionage training. It is believed that 33 subjects were successfully birthed in this fashion. The original subject they were created from cannot be ascertained at this time.
  4. Six months ago, Eva-01b was provided to the British government under Nerv supervision. Eva-01DT (Dual Type) was designed for a two-pilot interface. It was believed the high potential synchronization ratio between Legion pilots could serve as a test bed for future two-pilot Evangelion models, allowing reliable synchronization rates above 60%.
  5. Early tests were promising, allowing consistent synchronization at 71%-94%, but the first combat test was disastrous and would effectively end the project. The exact cause is hard to determine with the ensuing damage, but it believed that Eva-01DT entered a berserk state that was only stopped through forced plug ejection. However, it is believed that nearly all Legion subjects entered a unexplained synchronization state due to their common genetic heritage. The origin of this phenomenon is poorly understood, but tests continue with the remaining survivors. The original pilots either died upon the impact of their plug, though it is also possible that a struggle exacerbated their mortal wounds.
  6. The synchronization state somehow caused all of the Legion subjects to enter a “berserk” state similar to that of the Evangelion unit themselves. They lashed out at any perceived threat, which included Legion personnel. While they were vulnerable to injury, they were unmoved by pain and reacted very swiftly. It addition, their efforts were coordinated, and they engaged in morale-shaking brutality, including bare-handed executions and cannibalism. Though capable of using tools like keycards and blunt instruments, they did not seemingly retain their military training, and seemed to use firearms haphazardly if at all. However, Dstl special commandos intervened, eliminating nearly all Legion subjects.
  7. Only two Legion subjects survived, Legion-13 and Legion-24. Their memories of the incident appear to have been damaged, either by the synchronization state or by trauma, but both survived with injuries, including each suffering the loss of an eye. Personnel reported that the pair coordinated to rescue Legion personnel, though in the end only a handful survived along with the subjects.
  8. Why Legion-13 and Legion-24 failed to synchronize with their fellow subjects is unclear. Their only commonality other than their shared design comes from Dstl records where both were on a list titled “Subjects Not Suited For Field Testing”. It is possible that the other subjects on the list failed to synchronize and enter the berserk state, but if they did, they were killed by the berserk subjects. Legion-13 was credited with a level of curiosity that rendered her obedience unclear, with attached reports regarding her repeated violation of security protocols to discover more information on personnel or the outside world, and a willingness to question or contradict orders. Legion-24 was listed as unfit for duty due to his high level of emotional attachment to fellow subjects, and poor performance in test combat conditions as a result.
  9. Despite their trauma, it is believed that Legion-13 and Legion-24 can be salvaged as potential pilots. In fact, their position makes them a unique test bed for dual-pilot production models. With a battery of deprogramming and more stringent precautions, we believe that they can be transitioned over to Nerv. The Dstl will protest this action, of course, but will not have the political will to prevent it.
With this conclusion, I believe it is safe to go ahead with the full conversion of Eva-02DT with the approval of the branch head, in anticipation of their testing and field deployment.
Basic Precis [Excerpt]
With the current delays in the development of the primary units, we propose to develop a simplified test unit. This unit will lack the combat capability of the primary units, as well as their size, but will allow us to test the control interface in a live setting. These testbeds, the Logos units, will require a pilot.
Examining the genetic markers and test results of Gehirn personnel suggests certain pairings would rapidly create a candidate pool with the desired qualities...
Of the current pool of pilot candidates, subject Kurita-Steiner represents our top choice for the Logos Initiative. Her high scores in the initial synchronization testing would alleviate many of the limitations of the prototype control interface of the Logos units. Additionally, her academic prowess suggests she would be able to handle the scientific aspects of the project, providing useful first hand accounts of various experiments.
Her parents are part of the Berlin branch of Gehirn, and were identified during the initial Logos Initiative proposal, though the subject clearly exceeds expectations. They are of course eager to enroll the subject into the training program.
As per our request, an accelerated academic program has been initiated. Shortly thereafter, intensive combat training will begin.
The original proposal assumed greater participation, but the secondary and tertiary subjects can also be pulled from the core candidate pool. Additional subjects will be culled from the general population, those with high testing scores who are not being considered for final Project E enrollment for various reasons...
Pilot Evaluation Update [Excerpt]
Date: 10 December 20██
Subject Teresa-Steiner has, as expected, excelled in the past several years. She took well to the intensive academic and combat training, and with her completion of her degrees we have used her father's Japanese citizenship to draft her into the JSDF. From there, she will be transferred to the military cover program. With the Logos units coming on line, the timing is perfect.
The unfortunate fact that all but one other candidate for Logos did not survive the training regime means we will have to put up with the less desirable aspects of the candidate's personality. Subject is justifiably self-confident, but often takes this to unreasonable extremes. Subject is highly aggressive, constantly testing those around her for weakness, and berating those she finds it in. She is uncomfortable outside of clear hierarchies, and will seek to create one if forced into such a situation. If she's not already at the top of it, then she'll seek to raise herself to that place as quickly as possible.
Getting close to the subject is difficult. Her transfer to the training program led to feelings of abandonment and isolation. This has made her self-reliant, but standoffish, to say the least. The subsequent death of her parents during the Nativus disaster only heightened this.
Because of this relationship, the salvaged materials from that disaster will aid our project immensely...
Subject has displayed all of the piloting and experimental skills expected, as well as the fortitude to withstand the limitations of the tests control system. This is of great importance, given that the secondary pilot suffered debilitating mental and physical damage during Test Operation A-0004.
An acceleration of the test protocol has been proposed and accepted. The Logos Initiative should complete ahead of schedule. Data will be transferred to the primary unit construction facility as soon as it is prepared. The delays in Project E will not be due to failure on the part of Logos.
Unfortunately, subject has developed an unexpected attachement to her supervisor. Per pilot candidate development guidelines, supervisor will be transferring out, and will not provide subject with prior notice. Replacement has already been selected. Supervisor will transfer to Gehenna Base and assume responsibility for...
The failure behavior of the autonomous, non-Evangelion advanced combat units proceeded along expected lines, per information provided by Gehirn. The unit went out of control within 300 seconds of activation. Subsequent damage to the official standing of the Move Alone Program, as well as its materials and personnel, were in the upper ranges of predicted values.
The failure to predict the intervention of subject Kurita-Steiner and Logos Unit-B, in contravention to orders, should be examined. It may reveal a flaw in the AETHRA system that can be corrected before MAGI comes on line.
Subject has been appropriately disciplined following the incident. However, the action may prove to be beneficial. Her intervention occurred early enough to minimize collateral damage, but not in time to limit damage to the Move Alone assets. This accomplished our ends while improving the standing of Project E. Benefits should outweigh damage suffered by Unit-B and the pilot. This should not impact delivery time frame of Logos Initiative data, as all but the final tests are complete.
Given the nature of these tests, use of the secondary pilot will provide sufficient data. In fact the expendability of this asset allows us to reactivate test protocol Lazarus...
BEANSTALK Project Plan Bullet Point Executive Summary
1. Use existing state and federal resources to identify candidates.
2. Isolate candidates from support groups as needed. Use pre-isolated candidates where possible but do not hesitate to act.
3. Extend offers.
4. Move accepted candidates to location BIFROST 17.
5. Begin Growth Plan.
My mother died when I was 5. Something had gone wrong for her, when the Impact came... she held on for 5 years, but that was all. I don't even remember her except as a figure in an isolation room, weak.
Weakness. I no longer accept weakness. That's what my father taught me. He came to get me when my mother died. Took me away from my aunt, though she glared. He was a military man. We didn't move around much, though. Mostly we stayed at Fort Iris. He was important there, he said. It was a big base, with its own school, and we learned the important things there. Reading. Writing. Arithmetic. Survivalism. Piloting. Tactics. CQC.
Importance. We were important, he always said. Myself and his other children. The next generation. Sometimes, it didn't seem that way. Iichi vanished one day, and nobody said anything. Eventually, when I asked, father said he didn't pass something important. That he'd been sent somewhere else to catch up. Maybe we'd see him again someday, he said. We never did. And the classes continued. And people kept going missing. Until it was only me, and father. "Little Eagle," he'd say, gently, "you continue to leave the useless behind. I'm proud of you."
Father was very proud of me, he said. I'd made it. I'd proven I was as important as he always said. I knew everything I needed to be an adult in this new world. So now, Iris was done. And I was going to Boston without him. To fulfill my purpose.
Purpose. Yes. I have been given purpose by father. I will not be weak. I will not "catch up." I will kill those who need killing, and triumph over the enemies of America. Father said he'd be watching. Watch me, father. Watch your little Eagle fly.
