I find it surprising that a professional dev team still hasn't matched the feeling of being in a John woo movie quite like the specialists did, it's been like 13 years since that mod came out

For real being 14 in the age of hl1 mods pretty much meant you had infinite entertainment for an initial investment of 40 bucks

You are a box. Everyone is a box. There are also lots of non-people boxes on the level. You can camouflage yourself among the boxes and strike when the time is right, or go all out in a box apocalypse.

Sven Co-op and Scientist Slaughterhouse are fun non-serious mods

Natural Selection, Firearms, The Specialists, and Brain Bread are all good multiplayer ones

Half-Life 2: Jaykin' Bacon: Source is funny and good

USS Darkstar, They Hunger, Half-Life: Visitors, Heart of Evil and countless other singleplayer mods are still fun to run through.

TFC, DOD, and CS are fun

Even like a really bad mod that had two active servers could keep you entertained for at least a week, I've spent 60 bucks as an adult on games that have held my attention for less time than that french counterstrike knockoff that was miserably optimized for net play or the firearms knock off that I'll never remember the name of

I loved this game and played it for years. It was the only game I ever played competitively on the clan scene. My clan consisted of some french dudes, a dane, and myself. Good memories.

this is my choice, s+i was super interesting and once they revamped it with original models it really had a very neat personality. it's something that i could def see in the tf2 style now but unfortunately that never happened

there was a ton of stuff i thought would be cool when it got remade but never happened. it's kind of surprising how lovely the source mod scene ended up being compared to goldsrc. i remember there being a lot of hype and interest initially but i guess that faded quick.

yeah this was a total bummer, I remember buying UT2k3 and HL2 in expectation of seeing the amazing mods that would undoubtedly be released and I think the day it dawned on me that total conversions as a concept were pretty much dead after GoldSrc's reign was the end of my adolescence

tbh source and ut2k3/4 never felt or looked as snappy as GoldSrc and UT99 did, I can't help but feel like the latter day HL1 mods like The Specialists or Natural Selection have aged better than Source's overly smooth, overly bloomed mid-2000s look

I think I liked going to the mod sites and picking out new V_models for all of my guns more than I did actually playing counter strike. Predator minigun for the M249 :getin:

I did a ton of model conversions from CS plus reanimations into The Specialists back in the day. It was a really neat time where content creation that was like, 90% as good as what the professionals were doing was possible by a bunch of bored 15 year olds on summer vacation with a pirated copy of Milkshape 3d

well source has changed a lot since the janky overbloomed games of 2004-2008, and keeps changing. i guess it was kind of lovely for the first half a decade or so but with stuff like l4d i think the engine has come along ways and seems perfectly useble. i guess source 2 is due out soon so.. maybe we'll see a good natural selection 3, day of defeat 2, and some cool small-team user made mods on that----haha yeah right :(

I say now that I would kill for a well-oiled Action Half-Life 2015, The Specialists 2015, or The Opera 2015, but my reflexes have atrophied so much from half a life time of boozing and fried food that I would never have as much fun with them as I did when I was a spazzy 14 year old hopped up on root beer

did anyone else ever play fullbright box wars? it was an fps simplified into it's most basic components. you have a bashar and a shootar, one hit kills. all the maps were made of giant cubes with no shadows.

shitload of fun at lan parties but i haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, ever

S&I was great until the version that made it really easy to launch yourself with the charger-up laser gun thing and then winning the game was just how well you could catapult yourself down the map as fast as possible while carrying a scientist

there was something special about goldsrc that really got the "feel" right for mods like the specialists. can't describe it well but it was the perfect balance of fluid and weighty that hasn't been matched since.

i was talking to a friend of mine recently who was heavy into the cs skins & models scene back in the day and he informed me that Clan of the Dead Goat is still around and there are people actively posting there, despite the scene itself being dead
