you don't need police officers if you make driving your own car illegal besides for random scans to make sure nobody is illegally driving themselves, the car will get updates from the police department on road conditions and respond accordingly. you will never pass a law like that in a billion years, but it's not completely impossible to see a way around it. cyclists and pedestrians are harder but the probably simplest way to handle that is just to have the car stop as soon as a human traveling in front of it or potentially doing so is detected. of course, that's abusable... and you'd probably handle it the same way you'd handle some jackass standing in front of your car in the driveway, call the cops and have them come by or get out of the car and handle it yourself

poo poo, good question. there'd probably be a less impossible chance of that kind of law passing on this planet if they were just leased out to people and technically still owned by the company that bought them if only for the lobby power and total racket potential. in the socialist welfare dimension it'd probably be the government though

e: assuming socialist welfare dimension hasn't just banned cars of course lol

Yea well someones gonna have to figure that part out, because the default situation will be corporate overlording. When no one has the bright ideas + courage to implement them, naked greed and self interest is usually the safe fallback. Self driving cars in urban environments arent even possible without layers upon layers of interdependent technologies that introduce countless complications and catastrophic scenarios if any one of them breaks even for a second. There was a story about 6 months ago about a self-driving car that TOTALLY DROVE ACROSS THE COUNTRY BY ITSELF!*

*The caveat was it only drove itself on highways but needed a human to drive it on streets beyond that, which is the most non-achievement ever. I can make a car that drives itself on the highway:

function go(){
if brakelights === in front {slow to stop}
else {fuckin go}
}

Global warming is barely a big deal at all compared to the trajectory we used to be on. We'll have to do a lot of environmental engineering projects along certain shorelines and it will be a little warmer and wetter in some places, big fucking deal.

It's gonna be fun cutting off self-driving cars and brake-checking them, because you know that the computer will react quick enough to keep the car from hitting you, so you can just scare the hell out of it's passengers.

Where the gently caress do the people who keep crying about this made up bullshit live? I drink way too much and have done so in both smaller towns and big cities, in large cities there are always cabs just circling night life streets you can hop right into. Ride home with a group of friends and end up being out like 5 bucks each when you split it. In small towns you might have to call a cab i guess but usually you can find a dd or just walk to the bars and its certainly not going to be that long of a wait or that high of a bill.

secede and you can eat all the rust chips in your red pepper flakes you want, sorry CA isn't a shithole state like Kansas.

Hey now. Dairy farmers still have to pasteurize their milk to sell it in Kansas. One of my mom's friends had a dairy goat farm and pretty much only sold her goat's milk to private customers, but she still had inspections regularly.

But yeah. Kansas is still a shithole and I don't wanna move back ever.

I'm not sure how you function would react in a scenario like this:

you suddenly detect people in front of you on both lanes. there is not enough time to brake but you can avoid hitting one of them by a steering decision. person in the left lane is a VERY hot brunette, but the person in the right lane has a cure for AIDS with him. to make things worse, you detect that the chick is a famous convicted war criminal and that the AIDS cure has never been shown to work reliably in large clinical trials. you have 230 ms to make a choice.

Swerve in such a way as to catch both of them. -1 war criminal, and AIDS depopulates Africa and Asia, solving the overpopulation crisis.
