I think, if it were up to the dog, it would prefer to be set free.

dogs dont thrive in nature...they are creatures of artifice and cuddlin up with humans. its more problematic to assign these "noble savage" state of nature type desires to the dog imo, when it is actually a cosmopolitan modern citizen who likes paddling pools and sleeping next to the space heater
