They sure were asking for it pretty hard.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/enter...73c2_story.html

quote:

Three University of Virginia graduates and members of a fraternity who were portrayed in a debunked account of a gang rape in a retracted Rolling Stone magazine story filed a lawsuit against the publication and the article’s author, court records show.

The three men, George Elias IV, Stephen Hadford and Ross Fowler, filed suit Wednesday in U.S. District Court in New York. They are also suing Rolling Stone’s publisher, Wenner Media.

A lawyer for the men said they suffered “vicious and hurtful attacks” because of inaccuracies in the November 2014 article, which was written by journalist Sabrina Rubin Erdely.

Also Wednesday, The New York Times reported that Will Dana, Rolling Stone’s managing editor, will be leaving the magazine next month. Dana said in a statement to The Times that after 19 years at Rolling Stone, “I have decided that it is time to move on.”

When asked whether Dana’s departure was linked to the retracted story, a spokeswoman for the magazine’s publisher, Jann Wenner, said that “many factors go into a decision like this,” according to the report.

The Charlottesville Police Department has said it found no evidence to back the claims of the woman identified in the story only as “Jackie,” who said she was raped in 2012 by seven men at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house.

A U.Va. associate dean sued Rolling Stone magazine for more than $7.5 million in May, saying a debunked and retracted account of an alleged gang rape on campus cast her as the “chief villain.”

A report published by the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism earlier this year said Rolling Stone failed at virtually every step of the process, from the reporting by Erdely to an editing process that included high-ranking staffers.

No one at Rolling Stone was fired as a result of the article, titled “A Rape on Campus.” Dana posted an apology on the publication’s website, and Erdely also apologized in a statement.

Look, if you're going to walk around with poorly sourced stories, failed any attempt to verify your information, and generally skip all steps of the journalistic process what do you think will happen?

even if that particular rape didn't happen, symbolically it did.

Something dozens of new wave feminists said with a straight face when the truth came out.

If it wasn't this, those bros probably did something like it at some point. They might be :airquote: innocent :airquote: but that really was just water trying to find its own level

It's highly likely that at least one member of the fraternity hosed a girl too drunk to consent and then badgered her the next day convincing her she wanted it. But that's not a news story, its just business as usual.

Can't remember, didn't like 5 other girls at UVA get interviewed about their rapes and Erdely asked them "That's nice, know anyone who was gangraped?"

jackie hosed up. Instead of going to RS, she should've made it performance art

Fun story, that might not play out like Mattress girl hopes. She brought down the site "claimed it was DDOS" and then when the site came back the video no longer displayed the date of her alleged rape. Turns out that little detail, despite her saying "This is not a recreation of my rape (IT IS!)" might've been enough for the dude to sue the gently caress out of her for libel.

Actually I take it back. My favorite part was after the story was thoroughly and completely discredited, Rolling Stone blamed Jackie calling her "a really expert fabulist storyteller", and added, "obviously there is something here that is untruthful, and something sits at her doorstep."

Yeah, it was Duke 2003 all over again. Even cautioning "Hey, this sounds pretty sensational, maybe its not 100% true" was met with accusations of being a MRA rape apologist.

Especially the part with the (while on the broken glass) the entire frat was surrounding the rape and cheering it on, while the one guy who weakly opposes it is screamed and at called a pussy until he also rapes her.

I hope this lovely notoriously racist magazine goes out of business once and for all. Stuff like this gives fuel to misogynist. That's why women who lie about being raped should receive swift firm but fair punishment.

Well, the lawsuit from the Asc. Dean accused of deliberately botching the investigation is in the scope of $7 millions, a reasonable sum given what was said, and the 3 fraternity members are asking for $75k each, and the fraternity itself could get involved in suing RS and Erdely to the tune of millions.

Basically, unless RS has a warchest of $5-10 million to pay out lawsuits they probably won't make it to 2018.

There was a pretty lol thread in DnD

Can someone link the thread? I wanted some choice quotes from goons. I remember posting early in the thread but I tried to take a semi-measured tone asserting that the girl was probably raped but the details seemed sketchy.

The entire first page is "frat boys are rapist, kill them all" and "uh, this is literally one single uncorroborated source, that's a massive red flag"

lol I said this at the time

Plus, I think there are serious legal questions about blatantly calling 6-7 males gang rapists. If there's a court case and they are found not guilty, won't Rolling Stone get slammed with libel suits from the accused? That seems like something the legal dept would want to make absolutely sure they covered their asses on.

The RS legal department is going to get shaken up pretty hard.

he's quoting the original thread posters.

fwiw the first reply to the thread was "kill all frats" and noted black/white reactionary SedanChair's attitude was "ban all frats".

All fraternities should be abolished (yes, even the black ones).

Well that's the thing. I didn't know any frats either, because I wasn't interested in spending time with them. They keep to their own, it's kind of incestuous really. I'd like to think that they will die out on their own but I think they could use a push. Then freshmen looking for a social group won't run quite as much risk of being lured into a culture of bullying and substance abuse.

I'm not suggesting they be banned by law, just that they have no association with schools.

Internet feminists are doing more to set back their cause then any man has ever done in the past 100 years.

http://jezebel.com/review-shows-everything-that-went-wrong-in-rolling-ston-1695869239

Shockingly, they bothered to report on it.

The glass table thing was easily the most "come the gently caress on, there's no way that happened" that every Jezebel writer and online feminist ignored in favor of attacking men for being pro-rape.

Just look at it from a rapist pov. Are you really going to slam a girl through a table then rape her in the glass shards? You're going to gently caress up your knees something fierce and clean-up is a nightmare. Plus her entire back would be a gross bloody mess to the point where 30 minutes into it she'd be at risk of dying from blood loss.

Jackie's original story was different, but Erdely kept prompting her for more and more graphic details and going "Oh, that's a shame, it's not interesting enough to be a story, but if your were violently gangraped then that would be front page news. Tell me you were gang raped. TELL ME ABOUT A MASS FRAT GANGRAPE!"

different girl, different sensational story.

only mattress girl got college credit for it as "performance art" for her art degree then months later released a sex tape with the same time stamp as the day she claims the rape took place but explicitly said "this isn't a recreation of my rape"
