I like that in the movie tesla apparently figured out a complete string theory when at the time quantum mechanics had not yet been discovered let alone entanglement, lmfbo

Tesla figured out everything ahead of his time. He even figured out how to have sex with pigeons.

I don't think it would be a clone so much as an exact replica. They aren't instantly growing a new you from your genetic material. They recreating you down to a subatomic level based on a scan their magic machine makes. The real you still needlessly dies in the process though.

This is actually not correct and is explained in canon. You are disassembled at a subatomic level and the same matter that comprised you is sent to the destination where you are then reassembled.

The teleporter can not transport the SOUL though, so you arrive at the destination little more than a fleshy robot while your soul goes to space heaven

the term used to describe this (hypothetical, currently thought to be impossible) process in physics is still "cloning", though

its worse than that OP, you actually die every night when you go to sleep, as the electrical pattern that is "you" dissipates into neural noise. when the body wakes "you" are gone, replaced by a newly constituted electrical pattern

How the gently caress would it even work? Unless you're teleporting into a complete vacuum you'd be appearing in the middle of existing matter. I"m sure all that air, dust, or the passing space-bee which is now materialized inside your head is good for you.

And your soul-thing wouldn't be attached to your body anymore.

But whatever. Star Trek is fiction, you've got to let it be fiction. The transporters were used because they couldn't afford too many shuttle shots.

e:f,b

If anyone could have beaten me to a philosophical point it had to be Rutibex. But yeah, who's to say the "you" who woke up this morning is the same you who existed yesterday? Maybe you're brand new and only have that other dude's memories? It doesn't really matter, you can't do poo poo about it anyway, but it's fun to think about. Then you think about free will and determinism and it becomes crappy, then fun again because you can troll Christians, then crappy again.

The Star Trek thing is similar. And you get thought experiments like Theseus's Ship and all that.

But in Star Trek it's just a plot device. Because having a half hour shuttle craft journey every few minutes would get boring real fast, unless you play Kerbal in which case every mere shuttle craft journey can be an explosive joy.
