didn't he have to exploit the box to get root in order to launch the drive encryption thing? Also, wasn't it a misconception that people really use redstar OS in the DPRK?

Yeah. Based on what he saw, RedStar OS was the kind of thing you'd probably use in government, especially for embedded machinery and the like, although this was mostly his speculation; the computers his students used were pretty much all windows xp with some windows 7 (which was relatviely recent when he was there)
