false. the worst communists ever were the ones who destroyed millions of lives in the soviet union. their answers didn't work, but they were asking the right questions.

they did it wrong, and we will learn form their failures. my faith in Christ supercharges takes my communism to the next level, like super saiyin communism, and it works. faith infused action can overcome force, as we have seen.

It's Good to support independent artists who are self publishing, but major label music - even if I like it - isn't getting a penny out of me.

earnest-posting itt.

This. The piracy+merch/show tickets model ends up with the same money being spent, with more money going towards the actual people producing the content. Anything else is corporate welfare.

I do have to say that ... "people" might prefer to get their media through legal means and streaming services, and would be willing to pay for these services if they didn't try to prop up the death of loving cable by making you have a cable package. That is pretty much the damned fastest way to get your stuff pirated instead.

Anyone have any stats on Game of Thrones piracy figures since HBO stopped being dicks and started playing nice with streaming? Not a lot of people realized it this year but I bet it's at least had a big dent.

Patronage of the arts is majorly bougie but I'm willing to directly support artists when I can but since so much art and entertainment that's published in the world runs through multinational corporate middlemen who range from grossly incompetent and evil to evil mastermind socipaths I'm just not gonna waste my dollars for those types to weave a golden parachute out of

I go out of my way to buy my games on Steam, where the publisher and GameStop claw each other's eyes out over the last shreds of profit, profit the dev team doesn't even see after a few months or on any used games.

Buy a game 5 years down the line and if the dev still exists, they're still getting the money; if they don't, the publisher is, which can often inspire them to get new devs to do sequels and revive franchises. I really dig that aspect. Someone's ten year old game can still support their new efforts.

If I bought a Mettalica cd in 1990 then I also purchased the right to enjoy and back up that media for all perpetuity.
If an artist or media wants to sue me for having mp3s, then the burden is on them to prove that I didn't buy it. So suck it Hetfield.

If you keep all your music in a shared location you are a dumb.

what? Yikes.
Where exactly are these staving indie artists who are fighting hard against the scourge of piracy so they can afford to support themselves? Every unsigned artist I've ever been a fan of has been super eager to put their poo poo all over youtube and beg people to watch/listen to it. They'll usually sell their music on their website, but it's really lowkey and half they time they'll say right on the page they understand if you pirated it already, here's a donate link if you want. They just want you to come to their shows and enjoy their music and maybe get a tshirt or something. The anti piracy poo poo is always like Sheryl Crow or Metallica or something.

Sure artists should be compensated for their art, but you're also talking about an industry that literally thought they could sustain their business model via litigation, and did for several years. The do not have the moral high ground, they need to accept that times change, and be willing to compromise. The 90s ain't coming back.

First time I've paid for an album in a really, really long time was for one of those indie artists who puts all of his music up on soundcloud and youtube for free anyway. A lot of bigger name bands are following suit too. Its' basically Taylor Swift and her sycophants that are tilting at that windmill nowadays.

Something I think people should remember is that most of the time, no one was paying for The Music. They were paying for access to it. Buy a radio so you can hear the song at your house when it comes on. Buy a record player so you can hear it any time you want. Buy a Walkman and a cassette so you can hear it on the subway if you want. I don't think most people ever thought about what happened to their money. All they wanted was to get at the song, and until Napster all they knew was you had to pay for that, so they did. The basic element of value that made recordings something people would pay for is out the window.
