I don't find that weird at all. They're both great movies, heavy on atmosphere and with superior soundtracks! I find the dubbing in House by the Cemetery is pretty rough, but I really like the film. City of the Living Dead gets my vote, because I find it to be (along with The Beyond) the quintessential Fulci movie. On a separate note, I really need to order the Death Waltz reissue of the House by the Cemetery OST.

For me The Beyond was just on a different level than either of the other two. Fulci's best by a wide margin, and the only film he made that stands up to the masters that came before him like Bava and Argento.

Figuring out where to rank New York Ripper is the real challenge. Possibly Fulci's most bizarre film, just not for the usual reasons.

A few off the top of my head are:
The Gate
Rosemary's Baby
The Devils (if you can find a copy)
House of the Devil
Black Sunday
The Wickerman (original. Hell, watch the remake too if you want to giggle).

The Beyond is certainly strong, and I agree that it's on its on a different level than the other two, but they're on their own levels themselves. What I think makes it stronger than the other two is that it's pretty consistent throughout the entire movie. There are so many levels of weirdness going on, it helps to push the narrative forward. There is ample amounts of blood and gore, which is always welcome. It explains a lot, but leaves a lot unanswered as well. The other two suffer from some pacing problems (more so House than City).

While I was typing this out I realized something about the trilogy. The horror is confined to the house in House. In the Beyond, it's both in the house and city, and it's all in the city in City.

I've become a seasoned dick when it comes to horror, perhaps even a total pussy since I've realized I prefer people dying more in my filmage than animals. I remember a time when even the schlock used to be fantastic, but now even the 'good' poo poo has descended into the void of jump scares and possessed houses. Oh and doggies dying. gently caress the movies who kill the pets man I watch this stuff to see ignant human pieces of poo poo suffer not the poor kitties. I hate being so disenchanted with a genre I used to adore. ;;__;;

So far my plans consist of:
The Exorcist
The Descent
Occulus
Psycho

Pathetic, I know. Someone for the love of god show me the beauty of darkness and blood once more.

So I keep a list of all of the movies I want to see, and thanks to the horror movie thread that list has a huge number of horror movies on it. So I'm going to try to get through as many as possible in October. Most are movies I haven't seen, but a few are ones I saw a long time ago, or saw when I was too young to appreciate them. In the order in which I put them on my list (likely the order in which I heard about them):
Under the Skin
The Station (Blood Geyser)
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
The Sacrament
Haunter
The Sentinel (1977)
Possession (1981)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
Jonestown: Paradise Lost
Memories of Murder
Evidence
100 Bloody Acres
Long Weekend
Extraterrestrial
The Pit and the Pendulum (1991)
The Pyramid
The Dead
Monsters: Dark Continent
The Den
Punishment Park
Harbinger Down
Invaders from Mars
Blood Creek
The Asphyx
Housebound
Insidious 3
Let Us Prey
Vampires
The Hunted (2013)
Juan of the Dead
It Follows
What We Do in the Shadows
Crimson Peak
Proxy
Skeletons
Wyrmwood
Noroi
Bug (2006)
The Atticus Institute
Backcountry
Frailty
Area 51
The Nightmare
Exists
Mr. Jones
Spring
Into the Grizzly Maze
The Devil's Backbone
The Visit
The Hallow
Martin
Horror of Dracula

Naturally I won't get through even close to all of these, but if I can get 10-15 down between now and Halloween, I'll be doing well. I'm going to try to convince some people to see The Visit with me this weekend, as it sounds like it might actually be good.

I'm ashamed. I've only seen 3, 4, 5, and 6. I'd say that a great one was NOES 3, which he was a writer on.

Basically, 1, 3, and New Nightmare were the best. 3 was the the one that happened to ruin my life, so there is a special part in my heart for that. :3:

Edit - I don't like exploitation films or torture porn. At..... all. So I'm very weary about checking out The Last House on the Left.

Also, gently caress Eli Roth or any of those assholes who just choose the easy way to make people.... upset. It's incredibly simple and easy to gross people out and disgust them. Do I have to show you on the doll where they touched me? I'm drunk so gently caress it, let's do this.

No no no. It was pretty simple. Basically I'm a giant pussy. I guess. I was a small child and supposedly things can be traumatic when you don't understand reality.

It was the mid 80s and I was 4... yes 4 years old and I remember it. One of the few memories I have that hasn't been drowned by bipolar depression, ECT, and alcoholism. There was a rule that when the street lights went on, I had to come home. Well I had some time before the lights went on so I went to my neighbor friend's house. Lisa. She was my best friend and she was awesome. A few years older than me. We'd skate around on our... I don't even know what they call them now. Scooters? The things that the kids skated around with in the Back to the Future movies. Skateboards with handles. Uhg, anyway.

She said "Hey Pennywise!!! Do you want to watch Freddy!?" Well of course I do. That sounds like a completely safe and non-murderous name. Possibly a kids show. Right?

So she starts playing NOES 3. We get to the part where the girl gets cut in the bathroom by the faucet and Freddy appears in the mirror. I'm freaking out internally. Her mom walks down the stairs and freaks the gently caress out and starts screaming at her for showing me the movie. Lisa.... possibly 6 or 7, had more balls than I did at 4. Then again, mine didn't even drop yet. Well I ran home and the lights turned on so I made it. But for some reason I was hosed from then on. I didn't sleep with my light off, in my bedroom, until I was about 12-13 or so at least. Every single night. Embarrassing, but you are all goons. So who cares?

Fast forward to now. I'm 32. I still have nightmares of Freddy Krueger. I've used the old fashioned psychological... thing... called flooding. I rented every single movie and sat down and watched them all. Numerous times. It actually worked. And now I love these movies and Wes Craven.

I'll never forget how I felt though. All of those years.... so much fear and anxiety. I still remember my first Freddy nightmare at the age of 4. Every detail. It's amazing what movies can do to you. One reason why I love the horror genre. Drunken rant, yeah yeah yeah, I get it. But....

To be honest, I really didn't like Last House on the Left either. It's a thoroughly nasty piece of work and very uneven, but at the same time, you could see that there is some thought put in to it. Also, if one were to go over Wes Craven's filmography, it really can't be left out either.
