Pretty solid and until the end it was very un-Gundam, which is a plus.

It feels like Orga thinks he's meant for something bigger than his poo poo life but hates having to rely on Mika for it, while Mika just goes along with it because he has no hopes of anything better: no anger or resentment when he told Kudelia they weren't equals, it was a just so thing. But it also means that he's never second-guessing himself, which is why he owns at robot combat and shooting people dead for money.

Mika didn't even change the tone he was using for the guided tour. "This is the reactor room. This is the sleeping room. You and I are not equals. Kitchen is over here."

Plus, they made no attempt at retrieving the Gundam even though they hauled rear end with all of their loot. It's entirely possible that they didn't even know the Gundam could be made operational as something other than a glorified power generator.

Holy poo poo, that fight. Mika is a beast, but they made it so that the Gundam actually felt vulnerable if caught in a bad position, and this was just against two of the setting's Zaku equivalents. Here's hoping they continue using physical weapons because goddamn if it didn't feel like poo poo hurts.

I dig how Kudelia is both smart and naive, and willing to learn and grow up. She's got the handle on the macro-scale reasons for Mars' misery but obviously she isn't clued in on the blood that will need to be shed before this is over, and yet she doesn't feel like she's going to become a gently crying pacifist princess.

And then the way Mika picked up the pistol. This show is :getin: as gently caress.

That's also really cool - the 'lovely' Gundam, I mean. Crank isn't impressed by this powerful and undefeatable white devil, he's impressed to watch Mika wreck house with an ancient piece of crap. The upclose shots of Barbatos show dents and pockmarks all over, appropriate for an old relic pulled out of a generator room as a last-ditch weapon.

Orlis is dead, man. His cockpit got Bernie'd, but with a Mobile Suit killing chunk of metal instead of a beam saber. If Ganji didn't survive his Worker "only" being kicked, there is no way Orlis survived the Graze's chest cavity being smashed and torn open like that.

The lack of beam weaponry (and may it last until the end of the series!) makes for some pretty brutal fighting. There are no clean explosions here, just metal giving way to metal and getting to the soft flesh bits inside cockpits. That and the shot with the CGS boys salvaging the battlefield make me think of Battletech, so I now expect fights where pilots are reprimanded for spending too much ammo or destroying too much of the enemy robots :v:

On second view I really like that the exposition on the Whiskers reinforces the disconnection between Kudelia and CGS. She flips out at the use of technology known to be cruel and inhumane, then is cut off by the engineer calmly explaining what it does and how it helps Mika. Yes, lady, we need these to work, we know full well just how cruel they are. To top it off she tries to call Mika out on not valuing his own life and he simply replies that he does - his life, and that of everyone else. No one gets Whiskers by choice.

McGillis does seem to have his own deal going on in the OP. Gaelio is fighting and having a blast, but he is standing on a ship deck in Earth with the old guy's reflection on his sword. I was afraid he would ignore Atra's bracelet but he appreciates it for what it is and keeps it with him. Oh, and he loves snacks. :3: It just makes his moments as a stone cold killer just that much more stone cold.

And now we know who Nobliss is. But wasn't the Mars branch boss counting on his support too? I think he's backing both horses in this race.

I' m not sure if his support of Kudelia goes beyond "sending a girl to die for us is hosed" and "she's going to fork the money so that we don't starve on the streets" at this point. But just as she is getting exposed to the real world rather than a sheltered analysis of it, so is he going to see the true causes of Martian misery through her and come to support the independence cause on his own.

But for now, she is a client and they've got a job to do.

Yeah, no. You can pile up the reasons all that you want (the First Group were abusive assholes, they got kids killed by not standing up and fighting, they were going to get the rest killed eventually because they don't know poo poo about actually running CGS, etc.) but executing them in cold blood was hosed up no matter how you slice it. Even Orga's group kept things quiet rather than making an open trial: it was a coup with attendant murders.

As for having Mika do it, I am of the opinion that Orga's hands would've shaken and he didn't need that at the moment. The flashback makes me think that he tried to pull the trigger, back then, hesitated and got shot in return, and then Mika stepped up - perhaps at his own panicky request. ("Just loving shoot him!") And Orga still hasn't gotten over that.

I don't know if Orga comes out as professional more than just plain numb to the situation. And, for that matter, the rest of his inner circle: we talk about Mika and Orga a lot but fact is that the other Third Group guys in there don't even flinch at Mika killing bound prisoners. Not even Biscuit, a guy with two little sisters that he loves and cares for. Resentment alone doesn't cover for it: the previous meeting they had makes it clear that they're removing the First Group because they have no confidence in their skills at running a business, not for simple revenge.

McGillis seems as if he's doing things because he has to, rather than because he wants to. In his expo dump in the very first episode he explicitly states that Mars is being exploited by the Earth blocs, and it didn't seem like he was too hot on being forced to marry a 9-year old for political purposes, A CHAR jokes notwithstanding.

Orga's motivations for going through with the Kudelia job are still pretty mercenary. Deliver a VIP under Gjallarhorn's noses all the way to Earth so that the Tekkadan's reputation increases and they get access to more lucrative jobs. I'd like to see what other mercenary organizations exist in Mars and what they usually do - are there bandits and outlaws between the larger cities?

Keep in mind though, she is from a rich family but her personal assets are probably very limited. Kudelia certainly can't hire a pmc with her own money, assuming she has any at all after her father tried to have her killed to curry favor with gjallarhorn.

Which is why she contacted the gross fat sponsor to send her funds to support Tekkadan. Said fat sponsor seems to be also backing up Gjallarhorn Mars, incidentally.

Yeah. I don't really see Gjallarhorn Mars wanting Martian independence. Coral states everything openly in the second episode: kill Kudelia, radicalize the independence movement, crack down on them and look good for Gjallarhorn Earth's review. Only Mika hosed that up completely for him and now he's in an incredibly awkward position where he can't act openly against Tekkadan with McGillis and Gaelio sniffing around, made even worse by his botched bribe attempt.

I think the only thing better about Barbatos is that it's being piloted by someone that is basically using G-Gundam's system when everyone else is using sticks and pedals, but also apparently has super tough armor no one in the modern era uses (Probably for cost reasons).

Grazes are also using nano-laminate armor, which is why while they could trade potshots with Mika all day long everyone needs to get close and personal to deliver a killing blow.

He's sympathetic to her but his motives for going through with the job are purely business-related, if reckless. Pull a really tough job like delivering a VIP right under the noses of Gjallarhorn, and get enough fame to score better paying work. Note that even his coup against the First Group was motivated solely by business decisions - he had no problem with taking punches from them, but he didn't trust them with running CGS properly without Maruba in charge.

Again, IBO gets that physical damage that does not immediately lead to a kill raises the tension of a fight scene. Barbatos and the Graze Kai got shot and hit to shreds and kept going at reduced capabilities, same for the Turbins suits. There was a real sense that things could go wrong at any second.

I had assumed they had given in and added an AV system to his Graze but hadn't specifically mentioned it, since it would be a pretty big and weird leap from "barely able to float in place and fire a gun" to "engage in high speed melee combat against two highly experienced enemy pilots, at least one of them an ace, and not immediately die" in such a short time.

In the previous episode Akihiro mentions how he wants some more simulator time with Mika, so it's not entirely out of nowhere that he can fly the Graze Kai well. He is Tekkadan's second-best pilot after all. Though yeah, I expect another mobile worker to get cannibalized so that he can jack in properly.
