Well, six weeks into the year some of these chucklefucks managed to not poo poo themselves and won enough games to play another uncompensated one. Which means it's time for this year's bowl chat/godawful predictions thread! Well at least you waited for teams to become eligible this year before making the thread you stupid motherfucker I need something to do on Sundays other than watch the Lions play and resist the urge to drink whatever I can find under the sink. This thread is as much informative as it is a cry for help. So, are we up to like 389 bowls or something now? Working on it! 41 games, counting the national championship, meaning we need 80 teams from the 128 currently active. For the first time in a while everyone is eligible, although Charlotte is "technically" ineligible due to the moving up penalty, though they could apply for a waiver if they win six games and we're short on teams, which probably won't be necessary. So since nearly 2/3s of teams will make a bowl, if your team misses out it means you're really bad and should fire your coach and maybe move down to D3 or just give up football and take up So who has the Playoff this year? After starting with the Rose and Sugar Bowls last year, the Cotton and Orange host the semi-finals this year. What this means is that the Rose and Sugar will resume their traditional auto-invites, and once you add-in the Group of 5 autobid it means there will be on three at-large invitations to the New Years Bowl, which will have domino effects and ultimately mean Fun Belt teams will get dicked out of bowls in favor of having someone like Pitt show up and fart around for three hours. Any other massive rants about anti-capitalism or whatever else stupid things you believe? Not this year. We tell ourselves all bowl games are awesome and fun except that's only the case when teams give no fucks about d, and whoever says all bowls are awesome didn't suffer through that TCU/Sparty slog a couple of years ago. So let us pray to Xort and our glorious Agent of Chaos Katy Perry for a fun bowl season and one that doesn't end with either Ohio State or Alabama on top spoiler alert they probably will.

Georgia's got a winnable schedule other than Florida, so it'll be interesting to see how they blow it. I don't think the East will get swept by the ACC this year, but it won't be enough to save the league's rep. HBC might not make it to Clemson to be retired by Dabo, if only because I can see Spurrier finally snapping and quitting if he loses at Tennessee, which he probably will. First, I'm leaving the SEC out and that's not forgetting the line between my threadshitting and serious posting. The SEC isn't in the top 5 right now, Florida's only going to be regarded as an elite team if they beat LSU, and the West looks closer than ever to eating itself alive. Add in that I don't think any of the other conference champs will have more than one loss and whoever wins the SEC will have two, unless an 11-1 Florida wins in Atlanta to get to 12-1 and that'll supercede anything else. Would I bet on the SEC getting left out? No, but I think it's a closer to fruition than others might want to admit. Ohio State hasn't been impressive, but we're still talking about a team that can gently caress around and throw up 40+ at any given time. In addition, they have arguably the most talent in the nation, at the very least above the Mason-Dixon Line, and I'll take talent to negate the luck factor any day. The game in Ann Arbor looms large but I don't think Harbaugh has the ammo to win that one yet, and whoever wins the B1G East is going to murder Iowa. Clemson's got a legit chance of going 12-0 with the FSU game at home and SC dead in the water, and no unbeaten team is getting left out unless everyone's unbeaten. Same with Baylor, although 11-1 Baylor vs. 2-Loss SEC Champ becomes a real fun (re: intolerable) debate. Utah's in the lead out west and while they might have the toughest schedule of any contender not in the SEC, I think they'll rise above. Peach Bowl: Florida (At-Large) vs. Michigan (At-Large) Sugar Bowl: LSU (SEC Rep) vs. TCU (Big 12 Rep) Fiesta Bowl: Boise State (Group of 5 Rep) vs. Oklahoma (At-Large) Rose Bowl: Iowa (B1G Rep) vs. Stanford (Pac-12 Rep) With the Sugar and Rose keeping their traditional ties and the Group of 5 taking a spot, that leaves on three At-Large bids to be divided out. Iowa goes to the Rose and finds themselves up against a Stanford team willing to slowly grind their bones to dust under an avalanche of 8-yard runs. LSU is the SEC Champ by default, because I don't wanna put Alabama here, they face TCU who reps the Big 12. Boise gets the Group of 5 spot because the American knocks itself down, but now have to face Oklahoma in a rematch eight years in the making. Finally, Florida gets rewarded for its efforts against a Michigan team that also took the nation by surprise, and the pressure on first-year coaches to immediately produce results will ruin a number of good coaches who can't pull miracles out of their asses going forward. Speaking of which, if that matchup happens it'd be the first Texas school A&M would play this season. -Putting Duke against Kentucky in Charlotte was too much fun to ignore. -Congrats Southern Miss! You're bowl eligible so we're going to deport you! Now, the Popeyes Bowl had that insane CMU comeback last year, so don't so sleeping on it again. -The Cure Bowl is the only new bowl after Arizona/Austin Bowls weren't approved in time, and I think it's only fair that we break in that bowl with a team in it's first ever bowl game, App State. I dunno who they'll play but that ain't my issue. -GoDaddy isn't the day before the title game anymore, but Bowling Green/Georgia Southern is a better matchup than that bowl deserves. -It's hard to think of a circumstance where the RAB would pass up on Notre Dame, but Florida State is just about that circumstance. Regardless, ACC rules say you can only jump a team ahead of you by one game, so FSU could jump Duke but Notre Dame couldn't, so there. I guarantee you my math is garbage, but this far I'm throwing underwater darts in the dark. Most problems will eventually take care of themselves, and if any don't well then

BG, Toledo, NIU, and Ohio are all pretty much locks to get eligible, and Toledo at this point stands a chance at getting an invite to something bigger than the typical MAC bowl games. They still have games against NIU, BG and Western, but only the BG game is on the road. BG gets Ohio, Western, and Toledo all in a row. Ohio's traditional mid-season collapse should be here soon, they have a solid defense but can't really score to save their lives. Akron can likely get to at least 6 wins as well. NIU should get to at least 7 wins. There are very good odds this year that BG and Toledo will meet again in the MAC Championship. The east and west are both of theirs to lose.

I'd like for it to not be the case but Bama's name value is going to weight high unconsciously. I played with using my Moon Poll to try and predict outcomes of games by converting the score I get into a standard deviation, modified a bit for home and road teams, and using the difference between the two teams' scores to predict the outcome. So far I've only done this for AAC games, but here's what I get - 1. Temple runs the table. 2. Navy upsets Memphis this weekend. Memphis falls into the 20s in the poll. 3. Memphis beats Houston next weekend. Houston falls out of the poll for good. 4. An unholy clusterfuck of a tiebreaker looms (down to CFP ranking, or coin flips) until Memphis loses again, this time to Temple. Memphis falls out of the poll for good, leaving Temple likely the only ranked G5. This also puts the NY6 berth in serious jeopardy of falling out of AAC control if Temple were to lose. 5. Houston/Navy instead decides the AAC West, the moon poll says 63% Houston. Houston wins the AAC West. 6. Navy beats Army, as usual. 7. Houston at Temple for the AAC championship. At this point I'd have to simulate every team and get a future moon poll to predict this one, but for now I'm giving it to the very chilly home team at Temple. Even if Temple/Houston/Memphis somewhat cannibalize each other, their relative strength is going to keep the G5 bid among them, short of someone like Navy making a run and demanding ARE TROOPS be properly represented (and slaughtered like it's Normandy) but still. Even a 2-loss AAC champ gets in, since the next strongest team is probably Boise tbh and the AAC champ will be considered stronger. 13-0 Toledo might have had an argument but that's null and void now.

It's a rough decision with all four taking at least one loss in this past month, but the committee decides winning divisions and playing for conference titles is still important, and it once again sparks discussion that the Big 12 needs a title game. What's tough about the Pinstripe is it's hard not to envision that as a Penn State/Maryland/Rutgers/Maryland dumping ground. Had you beaten Northwestern maybe you get flip-flopped and Northwestern heads to NYC, but it's far enough down in the pecking order and too far east geography-wise that the marquee B1G teams won't be visiting.

I know the Big Ten tried to rejigger how the selections work to get some variety for teams instead of the "hey Iowa, you're going to the Outback Bowl for the third time in four years!" thing, but I do have a feeling the Pinstripe Bowl could end up being exactly that. Amtrak should run a special out of Philly or DC as needed.

In theory, we have six teams for four slots. if Clemson and Bama win out, they're in and most likely the top two teams. My theory is that a 12-0 OkieState beats an 11-1 Notre Dame, but 11-1 OkieLite gets passed up in favor of the Irish. It seems fairly simple. So what happens if Oklahoma State loses to Baylor/Oklahoma, and Notre Dame loses to Stanford, as I've projected? Your conference runner-ups would be a 12-1 Big Ten team probably Iowa, 11-2 UNC, and 11-2 Florida. It kinda opens the door for Stanford, Pac-12 Champs and now 11-2 as well and would have beaten Notre Dame, but it would be quite a leap from wherever in the teens Stanford will be come this week, plus they'd only be beating a Utah team that's down in the teens as well. It also sets up Oklahoma as Big 12 winners at 11-1, having survived the closing gauntlet. The loss against Texas looks bad, but Ohio State had a similar loss to Virginia Tech last year and the committee ultimately chose to overlook that, and so I think that happens here. Being the #4 seed and having to play in Miami, instead of close to home in Texas where they'd be heavily represented, seems right. Now if Oklahoma somehow loses against TCU this week, that opens the door for either Iowa or Florida to get in, but it may still be 11-1 Oklahoma State then getting in if they win Bedlam. But a reminder, 11-1 Notre Dame jumps all this crap and sets off a flood alert for goon tears. The MAC West is a mess, and right now Western and NIU fully control their respective destinies. Winning out for either team puts them in the MAC Championship. WMU plays NIU Wednesday at 8PM. Toledo needs help, but they could also hold all tiebreakers. If they win out (vs. BG and WMU), they still need NIU to lose to Ohio or WMU. Amazingly, they can actually win the West even if BG beats them, but it would be pretty nuts. If NIU loses to WMU, and Toledo loses to BG, and Toledo beats WMU, and NIU beats Ohio, then Toledo goes through to the MAC Championship.

Since most of the big boy conferences are already sewn up and don't have the opportunity for Tiebreaker Madness (the Big 12 is pretty drat close though), here's what you should be cheering for if you want to see a division have five different teams at 5-3 in the division: This week: Boise State beating Air Force Colorado State beating New Mexico Utah State beating Nevada Next week: New Mexico beating Air Force SJSU beating Boise State Colorado State beating Fresno State Really the only one of these that are exceedingly unlikely is SJSU upsetting Boise, but we're in a season where Iowa is undefeated and New Mexico is bowl eligible, so anything can happen.

There's also a scenario where the Big XII only gets 1 team in the CFP bowls. So the Big XII could go anywhere from only filling 3 of their bowl slots to filling all 6 and having an extra team for good measure.
