Do you love Homeworld? Well you're in luck, several of the original developers of that game have formed the studio Blackbird Interactive (BBI) in order to create the next great RTS experience. Set on a hostile planet, the player's goal is to locate and excavate the remains of buried spacecraft for valuable lost technology, while fighting off factions that presumably want to do the same or otherwise prevent them from succeeding.

Initially the game that BBI was developing was only supposed to be a "spiritual successor" to Homeworld, but after assisting Gearbox with Homeworld: Remastered they have been granted access to the IP. It has since been renamed as Homeworld: Shipbreakers.

Here's what we know so far:

-Return of original content in the Homeworld universe.
-Made by the original creators of Homeworld.
-The first new Homeworld game in 10 years.
    -An engaging RTS experience.
-A prequel to the events of the original Homeworld game.

The team has been busily working away on the game. Check out some of the procedural cinematography tools they have developed for themselves in this video below. Note that this also includes the latest in-engine teaser trailer!

Great looking stuff. What do you think? Personally, I can't wait to dig into it (pun intended).

EDIT:
Okay, good news and bad news.

Bad news: the name had changed to something a little less elegant, "Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak"

Good news: It will be out on January 20th!

Does this have anything except Star Citizen-style slick videos of stuff that doesn't exist yet?

Right now there is just the teaser video that went along with their conference talk. Since this isn't a crowd-funded game it is in no way comparable to Star Citizen. They don't need anyone to purchase fancy in-game vehicles or anything. It's just a game that is currently being developed. After the recent update with the conference talk and teaser video, I thought it would be a good time to start a thread on it.

BBI are the primary developers, just working with Gearbox on publishing since they lent them the IP.
It will no doubt play like a terrain based Homeworld, but I agree that a real game play video would make it a much easier sell.

Huh, I hope they release some game play footage soon. It's only a couple weeks out. For comparison, XCOM 2 had a full level play through and that won't be out until February.

I know I was the one that started this, but I am becoming less confident that it will turn out well. Either the game is not ready or Gearbox is totally screwing up on the PR front. Only 12 days away and still no major PR/hype push or significant game play footage. I think this one may wait until the next Steam sale for me.

Well, here's a new trailer...

Yet still no true game play videos. The most I can gather from one quick shot in that video is that you can left-click in this game to select units, so at least we have that bullet point.

Nice! An actual thread for this! But shouldn't the thread title be changed to "Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak"?

Hey, it's not my fault that they keep changing the name. (Also, I have no clue how to change a thread title.)

Do we really need three threads for this game?

Well I started this thread 2 months before the other (properly named) one but I think it is getting more attention. Mods can feel free to close this one if they want.
