Guavanaut posted:Also about how people can get radicalized without knowing a drat thing about what it is they're radicalizing to, shooting down the idea that there's something specifically toxic about Islam as a faith that turns are kids into terrorists. If anything it's neoliberalism (perhaps specifically where it intersects secular social liberalism) that causes radicalisation. The common thread between everyone that's drifted in that direction lately seems to be along the lines of "I don't know what the gently caress the world is even about any more, but these guys do and I want to be part of that".

I did make a half-formed argument a while ago that the neo-liberal right's continuous crushing of left-wing movements in the 20th century has laid the trail for a the radical right to rise unhindered, whether it's the American Tea Party, UKIP or (in a very extreme case) Islamic Fundamentalism. Obviously mentioning the first two in the same sentence as the latter is something that needs more than a single line and that's why I started writing up about it but then got depressed so I cheered myself up by reading Killing Hope. Which didn't help.

Mate, there are people on this very forum who defend everything that Hitler did with total sincerity. People will defend anything someone did no matter how much evidence is thrown in their way.

On the islamist radicalisation thing it's pretty loving rich of the western governments to cry about them now after they supported them for decades against secular leftists in middle eastern countries.

One time I was on a plane and this african lady was sat next to me and tried to talk to me about christianity and gave me a pamphlet. I told her that I'd actually read the bible from cover to cover and she increduously asked "You've read the entire bible and you still don't believe in God?!" The rest of the flight was a bit awkward.

tbf if I was a Muslim guy handing out flyers in Arabic only on public transport in the UK I'd be looking for cultural cues that the person would be receptive, regardless of their race. Around here there's a fair few people that would be able to read it, but also people that would launch into some 'we speak English around here you dirty bastard' tirade or worse, so I'd err on the side of caution.
