You're eighteen, and just about to step off into a life of wonder. The wanderlust has you bad - your parents have begged you to stay at home and live a normal life, but space is calling you. All your friends are staying on world, going to college, getting jobs and are all looking for Mr or Mrs Right. Not for you. Somewhere out there there is a world ripe for the taking. Adventure, Excitement, strange new worlds, and strange alien races. You want to travel, you want to see the universe. if you get rich trying to do so, well, so be it, but the journey is the thing. You stand at the doorway to the careers office. In here you can apply for almost any job in the universe. They will help steer you as best you can. Of course, if you can’t get your dream career, then there is always the draft - soldiers, sailors and marines all live exciting lives right? You take a deep breath, and step through the door. Inside you que for a short while before being directed to a room. inside a bored looking middle-aged woman sits at a computer screen. She looks up, puts her hand out and takes your dataslate from you. she plugs it in and your life begins to scroll up the screen, stopping on your index scores - your whole life is boiled down to a series of numbers. Strength (Str): 8 (Average) Dexterity (Dex): 7 (Average) Endurance (End): 8 (Average) Intelligence (Int): 7 (Average) Education (Edu): 10 (Above Average) Social Standing (Soc): 8 (Average) It’s odd looking at it like that, you're pretty drat average in the grand scheme of things - You worked hard and did well in your exams, so now the world is open to you. The careers advisor finally seems to notice you, she opens a new spreadsheet and asks one question… “Name and desired occupation?” So I’m taking a crack at one of these Create your own adventure things I’ll be using the Mongoose Traveller rules, but keeping them to the background as much as possible. I plan on updating at least once a week. Hopefully more! So, we have our first choices, and they are going to set us on the path for the rest of the story - at this point, I have nothing planned. We could be the captain of a starship, or we could be a lowly grunt in the service of a real captain. We could be an explorer or a scientist. They world is our oyster! I’ve apparently been able to roll up Mr or Mrs average here, so while we only get a small bonus for academic careers, we’re not going to have a penalty in much stuff. The vote Name, sex and homeworld. The first two are self explanatory, for the homeworld, it basically gives us another basic skill we can take - here is a list of homeworld types and their appropriate skill Agricultural: Animals 0 Asteroid: Zero-G 0 Desert: Survival 0 Fluid Oceans: Seafarer 0 Garden: Animals 0 High Technology: Computers 0 High Population: Streetwise 0 Ice-Capped: Vacc Suit 0 Industrial: Trade 0 Low Technology: Survival 0 Poor: Animals 0 Rich: Carouse 0 Water World: Seafarer 0 Vacuum: Vacc Suit 0 Skill level 0 mean no bonuses, but no -3 modifier for trying to do something untrained. Our first career Traveller character creation works in 4 year blocks - at the moment we are 18 and unskilled, once we join a career, we’ll gain skills and have life experiences - hopefully getting promoted. At the end of each term, if we’ve not been ejected by an event, we get to decide to continue on for another term, retire and start a new career or retire and start adventuring. I’d like to do at least two to three terms, then we’ll take it from there. If we’re on a good path of promotions, it may be worth holding on for bigger cashing out bonuses. Stats have a chance of going up or down with experience and age, but we should be picking up useful skills as we go. Here are the careers and their specializations - we need to pick an area of the career to go into. Each Career has an entry number and associated skill, I’ll roll 2D6+ the appropriate modifier. Thats nothing for most skills, +1 for EDU(cation) Next to the specialization are the Survival and advancement rolls - again, 2D6+Mod from that skill. pre:Agent Int 6+ Law Enforcement End 6+ Int 6+ Intelligence Int 7+ Int 5+ Corporate Int 5+ Int 7+ Army End 5+ Support End 5+ Edu 7+ Infantry Str 6+ Edu 6+ Cavalry Dex 7+ Int 5+ Citizen Edu 5+ Corporate Soc 6+ Int 6+ Worker End 4+ Edu 8+ Colonist Int 7+ End 5+ Drifter Auto Barbarian End 7+ Str 7+ Wanderer End 7+ Int 7+ Scavenger Dex 7+ End 7+ Entertainer Int 5+ Artist Soc 6+ Int 6+ Edu 7+ Int 5+ Performer Int 5+ Dex 7+ Marines End 6+ Support End 5+ Edu 7+ Star Marine End 6+ Edu 6+ Ground Assault End 7+ Edu 5+ Merchants Int 4+ Merchant Marine Edu 5+ Int 7+ Free Trader Dex 6+ Int 6+ Broker Edu 5+ Int 7+ Navy Int 6+ Line/Crew Int 5+ Edu 7+ Engineering/Gunnery Int 6+ Edu 6+ Flight Dex 7+ Edu 5+ Nobility Soc 10+ Administrator Int 4+ Edu 6+ Diplomat Int 5+ Soc 7+ Dilettante Soc 3+ Int 8+ Rogue Dex 6+ Thief Int 6+ Dex 6+ Enforcer End 6+ Str 6+ Pirate Dex 6+ Int 6+ Scholar Int 6+ Field Researcher End 6+ Int 6+ Scientist Edu 4+ Int 8+ Physician Edu 4+ Edu 8+ Scout Int 5+ Courier End 5+ Edu 9+ Survey End 6+ Int 8+ Exploration End 7+ Edu 7+ TL/DR I need three things from you 1) Name, sex and homeworld 2) Career and specialization 3) Draft or drift? Since our only distinguishing feature is our intelligence, we should be the reincarnation of the Greek goddess Athena, from a High Population world, hoping to become an Intelligence Agent. And if we don't succeed, we'll join the draft and prove ourselves the old-fashioned way.

Dolphin Bastian Heller, Male, Garden Scholar – Scientist (interested in xeno-biology if it fits the setting?) Drift His dad was a German hippie that changed the "uber Teutonic" Dolph into Dolphin. Dolphin loves but ultimately doesn't respect his somewhat fruity parents and is of a cooler, more rational disposition. Alien species are his main dig and he can't wait to get his mitts on interesting specimens.

Life is full of little disappointments. “I’m Athena” You say calmly, “I’ve been lead to believe there is a position along the watchtower for me.” This is what you’d been told to say. The man who had approached you at the school had given you a card, told that there was a special job in intelligence waiting, and then walked off. “Oh. In that case, you need to see my colleague in a different department.” she says and leads you to a nondescript room with a old man sitting in it. This does not seem like the place to perform an interview like this. This was the peak time for school leavers on Olympus, and twenty five million people were looking for work. The main room is a buzz of noise and a hundred overlapping conversations. Stepping through the door, all that vanishes behind you. Some sort of sound suppressor is in place. NOW you know you are in the right place. You take the indicated chair. “I’m sorry miss Clark. This is not the career for you. Sorry to waste your time.” You are stunned for a second. “I’m sorry, but I thought I was here for an interview?” “You are, and you’ve already failed. I’m not going to say how, let’s just say this has been going on long before you entered the room. We are very good at these things, and we can’t afford the time to let everyone argue. We have done you the courtesy of telling you to your face however, we thought that you deserved that - many people never even get to this office.” “So, now what?” You ask. You get the idea that arguing at this stage would only hurt your position. “We’ve already put an application in for you at the local police department - while we can’t make use of your skills, we are sure that Law Enforcement can. Olympus is a violent and dangerous place at times, and we need all the police officers we can get.” “Thank you sir. I’ll try and do my best.” It might not be as glamorous as a secret agent, but at least it’s a good job. Olympus PD basic is a lot of running around, close combat drills, investigation training and learning the laws of the Imperium and the planet. Two years of this is followed by a year s a rookie beat cop. There is no fast promotion here, there are too many hungry sharks in the water for anyone to get ahead quickly. As your first year comes to an end, orders come in that you are being transferred to another planet. The Ice moon of Belras was short of officers, and couldn’t train them to the same level, so you have been picked to go help them out. The ice moon is not as cold as you feared - good insulation means that the habitats are decent, but going up to the surface to hunt perps is a pain in anything not wrapped below three layers of clothing. Most of the crimes are small time though. the normal low level stuff that doesn’t get you noticed. You make some friends, but nobody you would trust your life with. As your first term comes to an end, you begin to think about what to do next - on Belras, you are a bigger fish in a smaller pond - maybe here you can do better with a career change. We a from a High population world - Streetwise to 0. We failed to get into the Agent Career for Intelligence, but got drafted into law enforcement. Skills gained in basic. - Drive (any), Investigate, computers, recon and gun combat (any) to level 0. So we didn’t get promoted, but we got a life event that gives us +2 to qualify for a new career if we leave law enforcement - we would have a -1 for switching careers, but that’s still a +1 overall. Athena is 22 now, and a beat cop on an ice world. 1) Do we stay a cop, or switch careers? (if so, what to?) 2) We have an advancement roll, this can be on the Personal development (boosts stats and fighting skills.) service skills (same as basic), advanced training or specialist (law enforcement) skills. Which table do we roll on? 3) We have two skills we need to pick - Drive is from Mole, Tracked or Wheeled. Gun combat is from Slug rifle, Slug pistol, Shotgun, Energy Rifle, Energy pistol. 4) Athena is a little bare bones at the moment, what personality trait will she have picked up from this tour?

Stay cop but put in for transfer off this frozen hellscape Specialist cop - if we're staying in this job we're going to be good at it Drive wheeled I'd say energy pistol from a straight narrative but those are boring so SHOTGUN I like cynical, especially if it manifests as pseudo-wise beyond her years

Stay a cop and see what our slightly better that standard intelligence has taught us about law enforcement skills. A couple of months on Patrol will have improved our wheeled driving, and all those rounds at the shooting range have helped our slug pistol; thank whatever Gods you favour that we haven't had to use it on a suspect yet. Is there a list online for personality traits?

Stay Cop, we want to make detective soon. Law Enforcement, we're not a SWAT thug, or a desk sergeant, it's trenchcoats and .38s for us. Tracked and Slug Pistols, spending time topside means driving a snowcat, and a reliable slug pistol is the appropriate force for an investigator. Bored, we may be cynical, sure, but we're too big for this small time malarky. This podunk's top criminal could be caught with a plate of poutine.
