Top Donor and Recipient of Forums Upgrade: Demonachizer: World Food Program - https://wfpusa.org - $5000 holy poo poo

Thanks to everyone who donated!! You guys are very generous and I think it's great that this forum does good things for the less fortunate. I wish I had more profound things to say but basically, I'm happy people donated to very worth causes.

If anyone out there has an idea of a charity we could all pool money for, please post a thread! it would be cool to get a monthly thing going here in GBS.

Happy new year goons!

AS OF 12/10 AT 7PM EST, PLEASE POST OR PM ME PROOF OF YOUR DONATION TO BE COUNTED. You can post proof here with your personal info edited out and I'll basically take your word for it unless it looks super fake. I didn't enforce this earlier so all donations previous to now have been counted but going forward without proof they will not be! Thank you generous Goons!

A few years ago, GBS gave about 15k to a racist hot dog man in Alabama. This money allowed the man to open a hot dog restaurant.

This year I thought we could try something different and give money to some charities. To avoid arguments about which charities are good and which ones are bad, I am suggesting the following to those posters who are able: give money to a charity of your choice and post the amount here! I will periodically update this post with charities and totals. I bet we can top 15k by Christmas!

To be sure your total is included, please post a screenshot confirming your donation (email or confirmation page). It's ok if your SA username is nowhere to found, I will take your word for it. I will buy the top donor an upgrade of their choice and match the upgrade cost for their charity.

To get started, here are a few suggested by goons in a QCS thread (posts may be edited to exclude inflammatory language):

Give Directly ( https://givedirectly.org ) is a good charity. They give cash to people in Kenya. Very little overhead and most people they distribute money to improve the quality of their lives by investing in better housing (many have mud roofs that they convert to metal roofs) or livestock. I particularly like them because they trust folks to spend money on things they need instead of dictating how they benefit, but my ideology aside, they help a lot of people very cheaply.

You may be asking yourself - where do you start if you don't know which charity isn't lighting your $20 bill on fire to light their cigars?

Haitians have a proverb they often use when discussing relationships:

Pa jete vye chodyè
pou chodyè nèf.

Don't throw away your
old cooking pot for a
new cooking pot.

The Goons came along and adopted the little village of Matènwa at a crucial tipping point. The Matènwa Community School was growing. Not only was it serving 160 of its own children, it was also starting a movement for other poor schools in Haiti to change their approach to educating children. That movement has now grown into a network of over 40 schools serving thousands of children.

Imagine, a 2011 Goons campaign with 1261 Goons strong flooded us with your accumulative donation of over 91K. The following year you supported us again 580 strong with a donation of over 70K. With the elementary school budget covered, MCLC/FOM was able to focus more energy on spreading the Matènwa model. Now we are 40+ schools strong! Teachers in these schools no longer hit or verbally humiliate children or make them kneel on gravel for punishment. We have 40+ schools that no longer ingrain a sense of failure in their students or force them to memorize lessons in French, a language they do not understand. Inside these schools, children are nurtured by teachers who are also being liberated by the Matènwa model.

Haitian children live in a so-called "democracy" but the truth is they are born into a dire class system where they are beaten and enslaved by an education system that keeps them down.

We thank the Goons, who made sure that this vital model school thrived to start a movement. In 2014, 118 of the 1589 Goons on our roster continued their support to Matènwa.

As you choose your charities this year please “Don't throw away your old cooking pot for a new one." Keep Matènwa on the top of your list. You are a force that is helping Friends of Matènwa transform Haitian education in a way no other non-profit ever has. Thank you and Happy Holidays.

It'd be great if to focus on one charity for maximum impact, but I wanted to avoid arguments about specific charities being good or bad. If we reach consensus, maybe a mod or admin could designate one and sticky the thread.

In the mean time, if you want to donate to a specific animal shelter, post proof of donation in this thread and I'll add it to the OP.

I gave $200 to Blessings in a Backpack, which sends a low income child/food insecure child home every week from school with a backpack filled with healthy foods for the school year.
I think I'll give another $200 but haven't decided where, something that helps kids locally for sure. Maybe Toys for Tots but I'm not sure.
