Give Directly ( https://givedirectly.org ) is a good charity. They give cash to people in Kenya. Very little overhead and most people they distribute money to improve the quality of their lives by investing in better housing (many have mud roofs that they convert to metal roofs) or livestock. I particularly like them because they trust folks to spend money on things they need instead of dictating how they benefit, but my ideology aside, they help a lot of people very cheaply.

The Goons came along and adopted the little village of Matènwa at a crucial tipping point. The Matènwa Community School was growing. Not only was it serving 160 of its own children, it was also starting a movement for other poor schools in Haiti to change their approach to educating children. That movement has now grown into a network of over 40 schools serving thousands of children.

Imagine, a 2011 Goons campaign with 1261 Goons strong flooded us with your accumulative donation of over 91K. The following year you supported us again 580 strong with a donation of over 70K. With the elementary school budget covered, MCLC/FOM was able to focus more energy on spreading the Matènwa model. Now we are 40+ schools strong! Teachers in these schools no longer hit or verbally humiliate children or make them kneel on gravel for punishment. We have 40+ schools that no longer ingrain a sense of failure in their students or force them to memorize lessons in French, a language they do not understand. Inside these schools, children are nurtured by teachers who are also being liberated by the Matènwa model.

Haitian children live in a so-called "democracy" but the truth is they are born into a dire class system where they are beaten and enslaved by an education system that keeps them down.

We thank the Goons, who made sure that this vital model school thrived to start a movement. In 2014, 118 of the 1589 Goons on our roster continued their support to Matènwa.
