let's face it... before the ubiquity of social networking (facebook, tweeter, digg, and the like) human society was in pretty bad shape already don't get me wrong. but now an entire generation is being raised in a world where social networking is the premiere form of socializing with classmates, friends, family, etc. In effect, your worth is now based around things like number of likes/stars/favorites your terrible quality religious/political/"super hilarious" meme and image macros accumulate. they check their various social accounts upwards 200 times a day according to a recent special i watched on one of the most quality cable outlets that exists (CNN, natch). having the red "new notification" badge elicits a similar reaction to a heroin junkie craving his iix spotting a i think looking back on web 2.0 "the social web", theoretical alien historians and anthropologists will be in agreement that the rise of social media, smart phones to deliver it everywhere in real time, and the rabid adoption of media by people of all walks of life due to all the cheap phones and plans now available was the main contributing factor of the downfall of human society. i expect within 200 years we'll have reverted to civilizations about as advanced as say.. the Incans maybe or Aztecs even.

i'm talking specifically about the main factor causing human society to be ruined... obviously global warming will kill the planet (and by extension i guess society along with it) but that's not the type of answer i'm looking for. now... please respect op's wishes on how the thread should conduct itself and take care when writing a response. if you don't think social media was a factor at all, provide a rebuttal. this being GBS i'm sure you'll all be happy to comply with this humble request and i can make this my first 5 star perfect gold thread

It's just going to give people that excel at building personal relationships even more of a leg up in everything they pursue than they already had, as more and more people get less and less practice with the nitty-gritty stuff like social timing and emotional intuition. You'll feel like there's a big problem with how society works because of the unfair advantage these people seem to have, but it won't actually be anything new.

The only time social media was any good was that period from like 2005 to 2007, after people stopped using that garbage MySpace but before Facebook was full of idiots.

Hmm... you're actually wrong OP, but at least you are sharing your wrong feelings online, where they do not affect mainstream society to any appreciable degree. But let's say if social media does wind up destroying society. I want you to be in my postapocalyptic raider gang. We will grow rich and powerful by beating + robbing the complacent marks who are too busy on their iphones to defend themselves or notice our identifying features.

There are still plenty of people who haven't been ruined by this poo poo and those are, as always, the ones I'm interested in interacting with. Does kind of suck that a lot of young people who but for decent parenting might've avoided the trap are doomed, but that's life!

hmm yes social media will indeed cause society to erode from within, causing us all to degenerate to an apelike state, much like alcohol and jazz and rock music and drugs and heavy metal and video games and the internet did previously

I imagine life after our generation will be totally unrecognizable, in that everyone will be using different tools to accomplish the same basic tasks humans have been engaging in for millennia

I don't think social media has doomed society. People have always surrounded themselves in echo chambers. People have always be interested in easy to read/understand entertainment. But social media does scare me, but it gives easy quantifiable data to pretend to understand the human mind. They already claim to know a person's sexual preference, drug use, political standing, intelligence, and the strength of their dating relationship all by Facebook habits. Right now this data is used for stupid marketing bullshit, that doesn't really have any consequences. But how long until we pretend this data is fact? It will probably not be long until they start pulling out specialized Facebook personality test for courts and job hirings. It is will be another inaccurate tool that people will pretend to be infallible while making life changing decisions. Just like lie decetors and ultrasounds.

Society is always doomed. Before social media it was TV. Before TV it was other stuff. The day you realize that society is doomed is the day you know you're old. And when you bust out the "Yes, but THIS time it's objectively different, I'm not just railing about Them Kids These Days, I'm right because of...." support, you know it's terminal.

Actually society was on its way back up before social media. We had finally gotten out of the phase that any fuckwit owning some barrels of ink made their opinions relevant. Asshats used to call each other out via newspapers and it was stupid as hell. Then for a brief, magical time there was no ubiquitous platform for that kind of bullshit. But now every idiot thinks their deranged/subhuman ideas are worthy of public attention again. So basically yes op.

i work in digital marketing and social media basically invented most of my job and guess what, its a really really easy job. The old people think I'm doing a lot, but I don't do much and get results. I can't keep this up forever, some day they will figure out that social media marketing doesn't really work for most things
