Welcome to the Political Cartoons Thread! This is where we post, discuss, and mock political cartoons and the cartoonists that make them. Although we mostly mock them, and there are few better ways to take the piss out of a bad political cartoon than by sharing your edits or parodies. Both are always welcome in this den of hacks, shills, and has-beens. Weekends tend to be slower since most cartoonist take weekends off, making it a good opportunity to share any older cartoons you've dug up. Check out your local library for older archives and don't be afraid to share.

This is the stuff that can get you probated or banned, so listen up.
  • Sometimes cartoonists are cheeky and use nudity in their cartoons. Remember to link that poo poo and put a :nws: warning next to it.
  • There is no moratorium for any subject. When something bad happens, don't tell people that it's "too soon" to bring up topic X, Y, or Z. This bugs Xylo because it's not like someone is going to come in later and say it's now okay to discuss those topics now. It also derails the thread like you wouldn't believe.
  • Deep Hurting is once again allowed in the thread, but the mods reserve the right to reinstate the ban if we get obnoxious over his stuff.
  • :siren: Chris Muir and Day by Day are banned from the thread. :siren: The mods feel that the increase of outright nudity mixed with MRA bullshit makes his cartoon unsuitable for the thread. If you must discuss Muir/DbD, then take it to the Bad Webcomics Thread.
  • Do not touch the poop without extremely careful consideration. "Touching the poop" means interacting with a cartoonist for the sake of getting some chuckles out of it. This can be funny, but some of the cartoonists discussed in this thread have legitimate mental illnesses, and we don't need to send these people over the edge or trying to sue this place (even if it would be hilariously futile). If you think you have a stellar idea, then check in with the thread first before going through with it.

:siren:THESE ARE NOT HARD RULES:siren: This is just a list of recommendations to make the thread go more smoothly. Don't yell at people or report them for violating poo poo here unless it actually violates a forum rule!
  • Discussion about which cartoonist is "best" or "worst" have a tendency to go nowhere fast, and it won't cover anything that hasn't been touched on before.
  • Requesting that people stop posting a particular cartoonist is an exercise in futility. It's nearly impossible to get people to agree on what cartoonists to ban from the thread, so they're all allowed. You're just going to have to suck it up and skip the ones you hate. If you really think a cartoon isn't appropriate for the thread, then take it up with a mod.
  • Having said the above, please limit how often you dig up amateur work from places like DeviantArt, 4chan, or Reddit. While it can be a humorous change of pace to bring up some skinhead's furry cartoons to mock, this has a tendency to get old quickly if you make it a regular thing.
  • When posting a large number of cartoons, don't just post a bunch of links. As a courtesy to people reading, it's helpful to put a unique number next to each cartoon so people can easily pick out certain cartoons out when quoting your post.
  • Kelly from the Onion is parody, and encouraging new readers to think that he's sincere has long stopped being funny.
  • This thread has a lot of in-jokes built up over the years, and surprisingly quite a few are getting old to people. Please try to think of something witty to post instead of making the millionth AGC joke. Or just don't post.
  • Sometimes a cartoonist will actually acknowledge our existence. Oh my goodness! But seriously: while you can talk about it or whatever, making posts that directly address the cartoonist is loving weird. No cartoonist is foolish enough to post in this rat's nest, and they're not going to read your creepy love letter to them.
  • Don't be afraid to engage in some discourse over whatever the cartoons are discussing!
  • Watch the derails on pointless poo poo that isn't really relevant to the thread.

Q: This guy got paid for this?
A: Maybe! Political Cartoonists are generally paid in two ways--as a staff position or on a per-cartoon basis by a syndicate.

If a cartoonist is a staff cartoonist, they'll list their employer by their name. These cartoonists are paid a living wage and just about all of their cartoons are actually approved by an editor, printed, and seen by human beings.

If a cartoonist is a member of a syndicate, they'll list their syndicate by their name, usually Cagle or U-Click. These syndicates act as a market for editors. We have no idea whether a particular cartoon posted by a syndicate is actually sold. Reportedly, they are sold for around $10 a cartoon, which is then split by the cartoonist and the syndicate. As you can imagine, this means a cartoonist can make very little or very much in syndication.

There's also the rare exception of cartoonists who are paid by donation, but this is becoming more common through sites such as Patreon and Kickstarter.

Q: How obscure is this guy? Is anyone ever actually going to see this?
A: For most, there's no way to tell. Unless they're a staff cartoonist (check the Index), the cartoon may never be printed or seen by anyone. Unless you want to check with the 200,000 daily newspapers in the US, just assume everything posted here is seen by the public at large.

Q: Is everyone posted here an evil, stupid, conservative rear end in a top hat?
A: No, we post all kinds. Sometimes a cartoon will present an evil idea sarcastically, sometimes they're just evil. If you can't tell just by looking at it, just look them up in the index for a very general idea.

Q: Did this cartoonist get a Pulitzer for one cartoon or what?
A: Apparently Pulitzers many decades ago were given out for a particular cartoon or two, but as time goes on it seems to have shifted to the artist's work for the year. So while we make mock someone like Ramirez for obvious "Pulitzer Bait", technically all of his cartoons are judged for the award. Yeah...we don't hold the Pulitzer in high regard.

Q: Is this just for American/Canadian cartoonists, or...?
A: We allow cartoons of all stripes, and we adore stuff from foreign cartoonists as a break from the usual suspects. There is a thread for UK cartoons, but we've felt that there haven't been enough UK cartoons posted in this thread and would encourage people to start posting them in here again. However it would be nice, if you have the time, to explain some of the stuff that harder to decipher.

Q: What about funny page cartoons? Webcomics?
A: Some cartoons like Mallard Fillmore and Doonesbury, are not traditional political cartoons but rather stuff with a political theme that gets printed alongside Garfield. These are fair game for this thread, but the apolitical cartoons should go in the Comic Strip Megathread. Also, while you can certainly share Doonesbury in here, it has its own thread for further discussion. There typically aren't a lot of political cartoons that fall under the definition of "webcomic", but you do have (awful) things like Galatianman that can certainly be posted here. For apolitical webcomics, check out that thread in BSS (or its black sheep mock thread sibling).

Q: Can I share this crazy email from my mom? How about this image macro I saw on Facebook?
A: This thread is strictly for political cartoons. Check out this thread for sharing political emails from your family, and this thread for political pictures. If you wish to further go down the rabbit hole, check out the Right Wing Media and Freep threads.

Q:Can I see more from X?
A: We'd really like to see more people consistently posting the same cartoonist(s) so they don't get missed. If you want to step up to the plate for a particular person, then by all means. You can post them as they come, or do weekly dumps if that's easier on you.

The thread has developed a few inside jokes and terms:

AGC: Shorthand for "A Good Cartoon." Basically, you intentionally interpret a comic with a fairly obvious bad message as having a good message. The original point of this was to poke fun at some of the really poor metaphors that some cartoonists were crafting, but the concept of AGC has been run into the ground. If you want to see some quality ones, Saint Sputnik has a blog dedicated to these.
Benghazi: While I think everyone is familiar with the Benghazi attacks, newer users might be unaware that one of the victims was Sean "vilerat" Smith, who was a long-time member and moderator of D&D. Seeing cartoonists use the death of a sincerely missed member of the community as a desperate attempt to smear Obama has made Benghazi a rather sore issue for everyone in this thread.
Can't Handle: The thread is known for getting into spats over ridiculous subjects. However, this phrase was used waaaaay too much, and you're not being witty by yelling "Can't Handle!" when people arguing over actual political stuff as opposed to goofy poo poo like weathervanes. Yes, we have actually argued over weathervanes.
DASGC: Stands for "Dumb and so Goddamn Crazy." A cartoon that portrays the opposing side as spastic, ignorant children, and their own side as patient, knowledgeable adults. Based on a Shmorky cartoon.
Don't Be Willfully Dense: A line from cartoonist Eric Allie when someone pointed out how stupid his cartoon was. Has become a thread motto of sorts to not be an idiot when interpreting the message of any given cartoon.
The Gay Abortions: Our annual awards for the worst cartoons of the year (and the best edits or parodies). Named after a hilarious parody cartoon, you should try to keep the really awful cartoons that crop up this year in the back of your mind so you'll have nominees ready by next December.
Nonsense...This Is An Election Year: This phrase comes from a cartoon that was the subject of an Onion article mocking nonsensical political cartoons. Sometimes a person may post this phrase in response to a political cartoon, and that's basically a way of saying "this makes no loving sense."
Pants Donkey: The nickname for a donkey from an old Mike Luckovich cartoon, and is essentially the mascot of the thread at this point. We have no idea why.
PBF: The Perry Bible Fellowship was a webcomic that people frequently over-analyzed, so much to the point that to "PBF" something is to dig way deeper than you were supposed to for a cartoon's meaning.
Zionism: Okay, not really unique to this thread, but enough people have asked about it to merit being in here. Zionism, in a very simple definition, is just far-right nationalism for Israel. However, if you are hearing Zionism used in the same context as the Rothschilds or the Illuminati or basically any Dees cartoon, then you're just dealing with antisemitic conspiracy stuff.

Some edits, parodies, and cartoons become quite memorable and frequently requested. Please check out the Politoon Archive first before asking for stuff in the thread. I'll be using the OP to collect memorable stuff from this year, and then archive it at the end of the year.

1

Sometimes stuff that starts here gets collected on its own site.

A Good Cartoon: Saint Sputnik collects the best AGCs here.
Ye Fowl Herald: You know that old medieval tapestry maker thing that was popular on the internet several years ago? Well, Saint Sputnik is using it to recreate Mallard Fillmore strips.
Iran Will Have Nukes Any Day Now: I have collected cartoons that predict the imminent threat of a nuclear Iran. Some of these cartoons are over a decade old. Accepting submissions, and the older the better!
If Global Warming Is Real, Then Why Is It Cold: A depressing collection of cartoons that display people's complete lack of climate education.
Political PBF: Some unknown genius is taking old PBF strips and turning them into political cartoons. It's a lot better than it sounds.

The majority of this index was originally written by Xylo, and I’ve maintained it by updating profiles and adding new cartoonists. If you are actually on this list and I got something wrong, then just grouse on twitter or something about how those idiots on Something Awful hosed up your basic details, and I guarantee I’ll hear about it in this thread before the day is over.

Eric Allie - Amazing art and skill used to depict lovely right-wing drivel. Fairly young, and also has been doing the art for Prickly City, a right-wing newspaper cartoon. In 2015, he has basically stopped all national cartoons in order to whine about Illinois Speaker of the State House, Michael Madigan. Willfully dense.
Illinois Policy

Animal Nuz (See: Eric Lewis)

Don Asmussen - The cartoonist behind Bad Report, a feature that usually consists of three gag headlines from recent events. Once upon a time it was actually hand drawn, but nowadays it's a series of decent photoshops. Regardless, it manages to routinely bring in solid jokes and Asmussen tends to be one of the more beloved cartoonists in this thread. It's worth noting that Asmussen is more politically themed gag strip than anything trying to make a serious point. However, when Asmussen does get partisan, he tends to lean to the left.
San Francisco Chronicle

Bad Reporter (See: Don Asmussen)

Pat Bagley - Very liberal former-mormon who is merciless in his criticism of the Church of Latter Day Saints, the GOP, and conservatives in general. Local Hero.
Salt Lake Tribune

Nate Beeler - Conservative, heavily influenced by Mike Ramirez. Every great once in a while has Correct Opinions, mostly on social issues. During the 2012 elections, was critical of the GOP, but seems to be settling back into being a shithead.
Columbus Dispatch

Darrin Bell – Moderately liberal cartoonist that really knocks it out of the park when he tries, but has a tendency to put out more middling stuff. Does the cartoon Candorville, which is also fairly political at times.
Daily Californian

Steve Bell – Highly praised cartoonist from the UK. Has fantastic art and solid opinions, but like many long-time British cartoonists, it can be hard to understand his cartoons if you haven’t been following him. Has a painterly style with excellent caricatures.
The Guardian

Clay Bennett - Probably the most well-respected, decorated, and acclaimed liberal political cartoonist currently publishing. He has won just about every award a political cartoonist can win. He has an amazing talent for simple, clear visual metaphors.
Chattanooga Times Free Press

Lisa Benson - Bland conservative opinions. Tries to be upsetting, but is mostly boring.
Washington Post

Paul Berge – Does LGBT cartoons for an LGBT syndicate. Nothing ground-shaking, but he consistently puts out decent cartoons with cute punchlines.
Q Syndicate

Chip BoK - Conservative with fairly poor and ugly artwork, ranging from moderate to extreme. Has no idea how net neutrality works.
Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal and the Tampa Bay Times.

Ruben Bolling - Well-respected liberal, publishes "Tom the Dancing Bug" and "Lucky Ducky." Known for doing longform cartoons instead of one panel stuff.

Matt Bors - A protégé of Ted Rall who has come into his own in the last few years. Very liberal. Opinions of him vary in the thread, from "Bland Rall-wannabe" to "One of the Best." 2012 Herblock Prize winner. Editor for the Nib, Medium’s section for political cartoon and comics.
The Medium

AF Branco - Hateful, stupid conservative. Draws people with one-tooth/Hitler-mustaches. A shill for a number of corporate interests like front groups for oil companies.
ConservativeDailyNews.com and LegalInsurrection.com

Clovis Brown - Bright, talented Jamaican cartoonist brought to us by forums poster KillerJunglist]. His opinions closely follow those of Jamaica at large--generally liberal, with the exception of some stomach-churning homophobia.
Jamaica Observer

Chris Britt - Hit-or-miss liberal with a penchant for goofy faces. In 2014 a local police union was angry over the cartoon posted below and demanded an apology while telling Britt to go to hell. Britt basically told them to gently caress off.
Creator News Service

Daryl Cagle - Owner of one of the largest cartooning syndicates. Liberal, given to truth-in-the-middle bullshit, vulgar imagery, simple caricatures, and copy/pasting. SWEN
MSNBC.com

Cam Cardow - Canadian, milquetoast conservative.
Ottawa Citizen

Ken Catalino - Conservative who hasn't actually drawn anything new in 10 years.

Patrick Chappatte - Internationally focused, vaguely liberal.
International Herald Tribune, Le Temps, and Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Henry Christensen – An right-wing shitlord that possesses no artistic talent, so he just uses clipart or whatever he can scrounge up on Google. Then he puts it against a white background and throws in whatever bigoted bullshit he fancies. Has a tendency to include a lot of annotations in his single-panel cartoon against a white-background, making him an even lower-effort Mallard Fillmore.
His Own Delusions of Grandeur

John Cole - Liberal, with the occasional outlier bad opinion. Has a very cartoony style and is known for a few stand-out cartoons.
Scranton Times-Tribune

JD Crowe - Conservative Democrat with very little to say.
Alabama Media Group

Jeff Danziger - Liberal, occasionally bold and to-the-point.
Los Angeles Times

Dale - Extremely conservative, total nutbag. Paints over GIS'd images and accompanies each post with an insane rant full of puns. Claimed to be going on a hiatus after the 2012 elections, but continues to put out garbage (albeit it at a much slower rate).

John Darkow - Liberal, has a lively cartoony style and only works in black & white.
Columbia Daily Tribune

Bill Day – Liberal that lost his job in 2009, and he heavily copy-pasted his old cartoons and jokes as a result. In 2012 Daryl Cagle successfully launched a crowdfunding campaign to pay Day’s salary in 2013. Day responded to this by plagiarizing someone’s stuff from DeviantArt, which he made a whiny half-apology over. To nobody’s surprise, Cagle didn’t bother trying to raise funds for Day again.
His Local Bike Shop

Deep Hurting (See: Terrence Nowicki, Jr.)

David Dees - Certifiably paranoid and delusional Photoshop artist, he believes every conspiracy ever (except angels or that Al Qaeda conspired to take down WTC). He moved to Sweden after he became convinced Mossad was trying to steal his bicycle. Loves his cats; hates the Jews. Missed his calling doing album art for metal bands.
Sesame Street and Disney. Formerly. For some reason, Sesame Street and Walt Disney decided to sever their relationship with him.

Toby Dials – Talentless, clueless, and hopeless conservative that doesn’t know how bongs work. Took a break from cartooning after Obama’s reelection crushed his spirit, drawing only a single cartoon in 2014.

Dry Bones (See: Yaakov Kirschen)

Tim Eagan - Liberal with a talent for fun visuals. Only does one cartoon a week.

Bob Englehart - Old, moderate liberal.
Hartford Courant

Randal Enos – aka E N O S. Stylish liberal, often works with woodcuts.

first dog on the moon - (see: Andrew Marlton)

David Fitzsimmons - Smug-as-gently caress liberal with a scratchy, messy style. Occasionally has a bad or poorly thought-out opinion.
Arizona Star

Adam Ford - Fundamentalist, evangelical Christian. His cartoons are basically the Oatmeal except from the lens of a hard right-wing fundie. Harps on people who dare interpret the Bible as being misogynistic and homophobic. Cartoons are also infamous for being on the verbose side, with a single cartoon being a vertical freefall into word land. Despite this, he not only makes a living off Patreon, but is one of the most successful webcomics on there.
Patreon

Galatianman (see: Lance Rengel)

Ed Gamble - Conservative with perhaps the worst color palette ever.

Ben Garrison - Hard libertarian with artwork about as good as his hatred for the Fed. Has a feud with 4chan, as they have found great entertainment in editing his cartoons to have an anti-Semitic message. Bizarrely, he has found patronage from gamergate and those of similar ilk, and seems happy drawing whiny cartoons about tumblr and SJWs.
Ethics in Games Journalism

Bob Gorrell - Conservative infamous for being one of the laziest cartoonists alive. Draws everyone droopy-eyed, and has put out blank cartoons numerous times.

Ross Gosse - Undisputed champion of the huge unnecessary label. Obsessed with the minutia of small-town North Carolina politics, despite not being employed by a local paper. Vaguely conservative when he actually bothers to comment on national politics.

Dave Granlund - "A Thing Happened" dot cartoonist. Skin-deep, milquetoast liberal. If you're offended, you're probably reading way too much into it.

Steve Greenberg - California Democrat. Jewish, fiercely supports Israel.

Tim Hartman - Milquetoast conservative, indulges in DASGDC. Apparently an actor as well.

Joe Heller - Moderate liberal.
Green Bay Press-Gazette

Henri (see: Henrique Monteiro)

Henry (see: Henry Christensen)

Jerry Holbert - A pretty bland conservative that only has only really gained any attention on account of how easy it is to edit his donkeys into terrifying skull creatures. It's also worth noting that this is a very tired meme and you'll have to do more than just edit the donkey head if you want a positive response out of people.
Boston Herald

Hope n’ Change Cartoons (See: Stilton Jarlsberg)

David Horsey - Extremely talented and left-wing, he nonetheless has hang-ups regarding Arabs and Muslims (although he recognizes that Palestinians are people) and has a tendency to sexualize women (although he seems to be getting better about that last part).
Los Angeles Times

Isaiah: - Draws the nonsensical "the world today just nuts" comics, which might look like something an eight-year-old exposed to excessive amounts of Freep would draw, but is actually from an adult human being. Overly relishes in calling Obama gay and having him in suggestive positions.
A Pack of Crayolas and Fierce Desire to Never Grow Up

Stilton Jarlsberg – A pile of compost that pretends it’s human, Jarlsberg does Hope n’ Change Cartoons, a comic that is pretty much just photos of Obama and other politicians ran through a Photoshop filter. Well, if he remembers to use the filter anyways. Rather than actually criticize Obama for his politics or bring up any salient points, Jarlsberg relies heavily on calling Obama a gaymo or some transphobic slur. Did I mention this man worked on children’s television shows?
Whatever Wealth Comes from Barney the Dinosaur

Taylor Jones - Primarily a caricature artist, he occasionally dips his toes in commentary, generally with a liberal bent. His caricatures often run alongside a story chosen by his paper, in place of photos, so commentary is not often required. Has a strange cicada fetish.
El Nuevo Dia

Lee Judge – Liberal that utilizes cute if samey facial expressions to deliver punchlines.
Kansas City Star

Kevin Kallaugher (KAL) - Economically libertarian-leaning, liberal on most other topics. As the cartoonist for the Economist his opinions track closely with the British magazine's editorial stance.
The Economist

Mike Keefe - Milquetoast liberal, fairly unremarkable.
Denver Post

Steve Kelley - Conservative, occasionally agreeable, but more often a jerk. Old-fashioned. He writes the conservative comic strip "Dustin" which is illustrated by liberal Jeff Parker. See the Comic Strip Megathread in BSS.
Creators Syndicate

Stan Kelly (See: Ward Sutton)

Yaakov Kirschen - Extremely old, extremely hateful American-born Israeli. He has been steadily employed for over 40 years, doing Dry Bones for the Jerusalem Post despite an eight-year-old’s talent. Hates Muslims with a fierce passion, and he possesses equally xenophobic beliefs. He was obsessed with freeing the Israeli spy Jonathon Pollard, whom was finally freed in 2015. Kirschen’s response was underwhelming at best.
Jerusalem Post

Carlos Latuff – Popular cartoonist that is as talented as is he left-wing. Can be polarizing at times due to his distaste for America, but is considered to be among the best. Cartoons are usually drawn with the intent of being used on protest signs, and can be found in oppressed nations all over. Drew SSJ Goku assfucking Chilean president Sebastián Pińera. Tends to do a lot of weird drawings about threesomes.
A Righteous Desire to Crush Imperialism

Mike Lester - Racist, conservative, stupid, hateful old man. Was arrested several years ago for domestic abuse, although his wife now denies that he assaulted her, contrary to the police report. Drew the "Be Cool about Fire Safety" lightning bug from the 90's. Has been drawing Obama with a rainbow tie since 2012.
Rome News-Tribune

Eric Lewis – Responsible for Animal Nuz, a cartoon featuring clever animal puns and Democratic talking points galore. A massive cheerleader for the Democratic Party who was absolutely convinced Dems would take both houses in the 2014 midterms. The reality of a GOP victory has not managed to crush his spirit. Also, for some god-awful reason, each panel is posted individually in massive resolution. Ugh.
DailyKos.com

Joe Liccar - Hideously bad art; moderately conservative. Father of Goombama.
Examiner (Independence, Missouri)

Loujie - Official political cartoonist for China Daily, an English-language newspaper run by the Communist Party of China. Presents the official Chinese government's opinion on a range of issues. Very talented, for a state propagandist.
China Daily

Mike Luckovich – Long-time liberal cartoonist with a signature scratchy style. Responsible for Pants Donkey.
Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Andre Marlton - Draws first dog on the moon, a weird Australian political cartoon with very minimalist art (or lazy, depending on how nice you want to be) and a whole lot of words. On the whole though, it's a fairly inoffensive lefty cartoon that, on very rare occasion, can have its moments. Won a Walkley Award.
National Treasure and the Guardian Australia

RJ Matson - Prodigious liberal, with a tendency towards overlabeling.
Roll Call

Gary McCoy - Idiotic, no-talent knuckle-dragging conservative. Misogynistic, racist, homophobic liar, given to physically threatening his critics, fan of giant pickles and lottery tickets. He and his younger brother Glenn often work together on greeting cards, their syndicated comic strip "The Duplex," and miscellaneous other art projects. Glenn and Gary have both done character design and storyboards for major animated features such as "Despicable Me."

Glenn McCoy - Every bit as evil as his older brother Gary, except Glenn also possesses talent, tact, and a sense of humor and timing. Unlike his brother, he has numerous awards to his name. Much more private than Gary, he does not give out his address and invite people to go one-on-one with him. He and his older brother Gary often work together on greeting cards, their syndicated comic strip "The Duplex," and miscellaneous other art projects. Glenn and Gary have both done character design and storyboards for major animated features such as "Despicable Me."
Universal Press Syndicate

Rick McKee - Conservative with some talent. Previously fairly unremarkable, he has actually been growing more right-wing and offensive over the last year. Unlike just about every other cartoonist in this thread, I cannot think of one cartoon of his that was agreeable.
Augusta Chronicle

Henrique Monteiro - Portuguese cartoonist with a penchant for strong caricatures. Lovingly translated, photoshopped into English, and explained by forums user KoldPT.
Sapo.pt

Terrence Nowicki, Jr. – A goon that goes by the handle Deep Hurting, he originally drew some cartoons for SA. He only puts out one cartoon a month, but they tend to be clever with colorful and detailed art. Originally had his own thread because we were weirdos and kept making GBS threads this thread up with fighting over him, but he doesn’t really post here anymore so we’re allowed to discuss him in this thread once again. Don’t mess it up.

Jack Ohman - The youngest cartoonist to be syndicated at the tender age of 19, and one of the older active cartoonists here with his career beginning in the early 80s. Has a variety of awards and seems like a generally nice guy that likes giving money to charitySomehow manages to make fairly expressive faces despite drawing really tiny heads in contrast to someone like Allie or Kreider who tend to draw people's heads larger.
The Sacramento Bee & Tribune Media Services

Henry Payne - Talented, stylish conservative jerk. Very rarely will call the GOP out on its bullshit. A big car enthusiast, and actually has space on his blog dedicated to terrible, manchildish reviews of them. Absolutely hates green alternatives to traditional motor vehicles, and as a result has a tendency to churn out more “if global warming why snow?” per year than any other cartoonist. Half of his cartoons each year involve lovely bumper sticker jokes.
Detroit News

Mike Peters - Milquetoast liberal. Also draws the syndicated comic strip Mother Goose & Grimm. See the Comic Strip Thread in BSS.
Dayton Daily News

Pigman - Men's Rights Advocate and atheist. Massive misogynist, and oddly enough tends to be very liberal on other issues (when he rarely mentions them). In this bizarre and horrible webcomic, the Pigman beats people (usually women) with a rubber chicken while spouting MRA talking points. He believes the Patriarchy is the best way to defeat the Plutocracy. Was so obnoxious that he actually got kicked off an MRA subreddit in 2013.
Angry Men

Bruce Plante - Goofy Democratic cheerleader. His elephants are pink, for some reason. Enjoys putting his opponents in tiny hats.
Tulsa World

David Pope - Award-winning Australian cartoonist, generally praised in the thread for his excellent artwork and strong use of visual metaphor. Also popular for his inventive caricatures of politicians, the most famous of which being a short, speedo-clad Tony Abbott.
The Canberra Times

Milt Priggee - Far left and intentionally offensive. Very hit-or-miss, he is nonetheless unafraid of cutting straight to the heart of an issue. Takes pride in having cartoons rejected by editors.
People Who Post :drat:

Ted Rall - Far left shithead; wart survivor. Utterly incompetent artist and writer whose work resembles bad Simpsons fanart. Desperately needs to be the center of attention, he envisions himself as the leader of a socialist revolution. Hates art Spiegelman and sees him as some kind of Cartoon Kingpin keeping people out of the business. Comics were removed from the Daily KOS because they found his Obama caricature to be racist. The LA Times dropped after Rall supposedly lied about a rather mild encounter with LAPD in 2001.
Sacramaneto Bee

Michael Ramirez - Republican to the bone, and one of the biggest names in the business. Obsessed with drawing and endlessly crosshatching gigantic inanimate objects and labeling them "DEBT." He is a two-time Pulizter Prize winner, to just about everyone's amazement. Draws Obama as a disgusting worm. Petty, trivial, and dumb, he will never respond with anything but GOP platitudes.
Investor's Business Daily

Ratland (See: Terry Wise)

Lance Rengel - Evangelical pastor and creator of Galatianman. It’s a political, religiously-charged comic with a plot that moves at a glacial pace (current arc started with the Giffords shooting). We are pretty much his entire audience, to the point where he even did a few touching comics about vilerat’s death (only to rant about Benghazi mere weeks after). His comics are hateful, frequently nonsensical pieces of poorly-drawn dreck.
Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ

Rob Rogers - Pittsburgh-based liberal with a distinctive style, and focus on local issues.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

JRRose! – A goofy conservative that is fond of dad jokes and spells puns. Enjoys explaining the jokes in his cartoons. He frequently comments on Virginia local women's basketball and draws puzzles and cartoons for children. Will remind you of his conservativism with a lovely cartoon every so often. He is also the current artist of the the syndicated comic strip Barney Google and Snuffy Smith.
Byrd Newspapers of Virginia and Daily News-Record

Martin Rowson – Excellent, liberal cartoonist from the UK. His artwork shows tremendous talent, drawing incredibly ugly landscapes full of grotesque caricatures. He employs a lot of invented visual shorthand which can make his cartoons hard to decipher on occasion, but they are scathing works critical of his government that reward long-time readers.
The Guardian

Ben Sargent - Liberal, with the occasional outstanding comic. Actually knows how to crosshatch.
Austin American-Statesman

Rob Smith, Jr. - Cartoonist for GlennBeck.com and that really ought to tell you everything you need to know about him.
GlennBeck.com

Snafu Cartoons - (See Bill Trantham)

Jen Sorensen - Liberal cartoonist who started her career relatively recently back in 1998. She had a cartoony style with neat, simple caricatures, and she's known for using the same generic character as a stand-in for just about any cranky white guy. One of the younger cartoonists here, and got a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award in 2013. Winner of the 2014 Herblock Prize, and the first woman to be a recipient.

Scott Stantis - Conservative, although left-leaning on issues such as torture and spying (even during the Bush administration). Has done an about-face on issues like gay marriage and Iraq. Regardless he is still firmly in the right wing and thinks socialism is dangerous. Creator of the syndicated political comic strip Prickly City, he has contracted Eric Allie to draw it for him for the last several years. It’s also lovely.

Mark Streeter - "WHIL= He HΔS a GooD STYLE and oPINIONS, STR==T=R's LETERiNG iS ΔNNoYiNG To a FE\/\/ oF the REGULΔRS HER=." Xylo has personally asked him to write neater and he has refused. Seriously, Streeter, an "A" is not a triangle. Jesus. He also does some of the most accurate caricatures of any political cartoonist.
Savannah Morning News

Ward Sutton - Witty creator of the parody political cartoons of the Onion. His persona is a grumpy, petty old conservative political cartoonist named Stan Kelly. He also does regular political cartoons on occasion.
Onion

Ann Telnaes – Incredibly talented artist who gets a kick out of mocking right-wingers. Her cartoons tend to be simple, but are frequently animated with beautiful artwork and fun action. She got in a bit of trouble in 2015 for depicting Ted Cruz’s children as chimps, but several cartoonists came to her defense when the cartoon got pulled.
The Washington Post

This Modern World (See: Tom Tomorrow)

Bruce Tinsley - Conservative alcoholic author of Mallard Fillmore. He (along with Stantis’s Prickly City) among those featured here in that his political cartoon is syndicated on the funny pages in almost every newspaper in America, between Garfield and Wizard of Id. Because of this, he has to submit his cartoons two weeks in advance and doesn’t bother to try and make sure his commentary will still be relevant by the time people read it. Attacks and viciously libels his personal enemies with his comics, such as calling Jon Stewart a pedophile and insulting the judge who gave Tinsley a DUI.
King Features Syndicate

Tom Toles - Talented and witty liberal that possesses an inhuman loathing for the DC Metro.
Washington Post

Tom Tomorrow - The pen name of Dan Perkins, who is behind the comic This Modern World. Very liberal, Tomorrow has been a fixture of many alt publications for over two decades now. The art style, which looks like a bunch of generic 50s era artwork, was intentionally done by using clip and magazine cutouts to create the strips. While the art style kinda lost its impact over the years, especially now that it's all hand-drawn, TMW still can provide some fairly biting commentary every now and then.

Rob Tornoe - Bland artistically, he is the cartoonist for Media Matters and thus quite liberal. Initially defended Joe Paterno, but when evidence came to light, he admitted his error and corrected it. Admirable.
MediaMatters.com

Bill Trantham - Draws Snafu Cartoons, which are just racist political cartoons drawn terribly. The gimmick is that Trantham allows people to pay him to draw a cartoon, so you get a lot of crazy right-wing talking points…or a drawing of Pants Donkey.
People With Too Much Money

Marty Two Bulls - Native American cartoonist that, unsurprisingly, covers a lot of Native American issues. Universally praised in this thread, he has excellent artwork that's notable for properly using crosshatching to shade and add depth his cartoons rather than draw messy boats and trains. No other cartoonist in this thread really touches on the problems that natives face in the USA, and Two Bulls shoots unapologetic criticism at both parties (and the nation as a whole) for ignoring them. On other issues, he is pretty left-leaning.
Indian Country Today Media Network

Arend Van Dam - Dutch cartoonist with fairly bad artwork.

Gary Varvel – Originally a bland conservative, has become something of a regular by doubling down on the rear end in a top hat opinions. Seems inspired by Ramirez, which is…troubling.
Indianapolis Star

Terry Wise - Very conservative. Very strange art style, very strange business model, very strange old man. Author of Ratland. Sincerely believes in the loving act of beating your children.

Monte Wolverton - Liberal and son of famous cartoonist Basil Wolverton. Loooves death.
MAD Magazine

the world today just nuts - (See Isaiah)

Matt Wuerker - 2012 Pulitzer Prize winner and liberal cartoonist for Politico.com.

Adam Zyglis - Talented liberal cartoonist who has recently expanded into color. There's something refreshingly honest to his cartoons, in my opinion.

Okay so the OP is from last year and doesn't have all the additions I made over the course of 2015 so I'll fix it when I get the time.

Cutting back on stupid Facebook/DA/whatever cartoons has been encouraged, so maybe don't do weekly dumps of that poo poo.

Pants Donkey
Nov 13, 2011

Because it isn't posted literally every day. Like I said earlier, the thread was strongly encouraged to ease up on posting poo poo like Henry, The World Today Just Nuts, Vegan Comics, and other drek from assorted corners of the internet. There's no particularly hard rule for this or what qualifies as too lovely to post on a regular basis, but if it's drawn or crayon or features Obama as a pony then maybe think a bit before posting.

Save that poo poo for particularly slow weekends or something. Don't make a routine of posting it.

Pants Donkey

You can post it, just infrequently.

We have enough bad professional cartoonists as it is, so we don't need to flood the place with lovely amateur crap.

Stantis, although his art is fairly medicore. It's kinda like Ramirez except he can draw human beings.

He called out the GOP in waterboarding in Prickly City in the middle of the Bush administration, which already makes him better than the jackasses who retroactively deem Bush as bad. He also changed his mind on gay marriage, and he's has done cartoons in which he wrestles with the guilt of supporting the Iraq invasion.

Keep in mind he's still a conservative, so despite Bush getting so much wrong he still fawns over neoconservatives and Obama Bad.

Early 90s were a bit hazy for me, being like eight years old, but correct if I'm wrong in saying that Bush the Elder also wasn't even half as charismatic as Reagan and Bill Clinton is, well, Bill Clinton. Imagine he cleaned up the youth vote like Obama did, although maybe not the same magnitude of turnout.

Also covering the 1992 election is great and I'll throw links in the OP.

Bill seems mostly content to not even be on the radar these days. He also had heart surgery in 2010 so he's probably just hanging around being old these days. I mean the dude's almost 70 and was freaking president so if he wants to putter around and not really be doing anything I think he's earned it.
He gave a speech at the 2012 convention for Obama, and it went over really well so I wouldn't be surprised if he gave another this year.

On the other hand, I think Hillary wants to stand on her own and not appear to be riding Bill's popularity, so maybe she'll just have Obama give a speech which wouldn't be a terrible idea.

Campbell's announced their support for a new law that would require foods using GMOs to say so on the packaging. It's apparently a big break from other major food companies, but that's not terribly surprising when consider corporations and their opinions of regulation.

I'm not one who cares about GMOs, but I don't have much issue with this.

Apparently this person who accused him made it up (he was on the other side of the country when it purportedly happened) unless there's been further developments. Naturally this means every other woman who accused him is also lying, along with every other woman who accuses a man of rape.

As that comic shows, Ford is 100% okay with Calvinists and he probably is one himself although it's hard to tell if the comic he did on Calvinists was poking fun at them or himself as well.

Also, to make you all feel a wee bit better, Ford's patreon has lost about $1,000 per month since I last check. Though this means he is "only" making about $45,000 a year on his comic, that's better than about $55,000, right?

...right? :smithicide:
