Hell, even Chihayafuru followed the same narrative where s1 was a bit more varied but s2 focused almost solely on the tournament.

i actually sort of like the vertical format as long as the artist does interesting things with it. simpler layouts can sometimes force some interesting composition out of people ] usually it's just trash generic manga formatting translated into a single column though
