Ahhh. Finally some time off from work and gets to enjoy this five long minutes of paid vacation time that Bohn needed. He is going to take this moment and scenery slowly since he is apparently going through his grief stage too quickly.

Ahhh. The smell of blood always calms him down. It reminds him of the time where the train tries to kill him but his body refused to die... Ahhh?

Now is certainly a good bloody sobbing time to cry at his family dead body like a traditional japanese human being that his teammates failed to comprehend. Can't they see humility is important control the virus? Can't they see the importance of mourning the dead? At least the cyborg understands even through he is half robot.

Ahhh. He can feel his blood calming down already. High blood pressure suck.

It's easy enough to locate the vehicle Ruby Phoenix drove in on. It's pretty badly damaged by the fallout of your fight but still largely intact. A quick search reveals nothing convenient like a wallet or map with "secret base" or anything. Also no phone or GPS device left behind.

Down Below

From down the hallway there's a sudden sound like the crack of thunder and the lights (and Ex Machina's electronic devices) flicker and dim briefly. Both Ex Machina and Wraithblade notice that the power interference seems to happen a fraction of a second before the thunderous noise. The electronics stabilize quickly but there are several screams from farther down the hallway.

Before William could take action, the branch chief raised a hand to forestall him.

"The lights flickered before that crack of thunder. It is possible that we may be up against a Black Dog as well as the Chimaera and Balor. The possibility of automated and subverted base defenses up ahead cannot be discounted, either. Wraithblade, there is a suitable access point underneath that panel," he said, pointing at a spot on the wall to William's right. "Tchernobog should be capable of cutting through the steel to reveal the circuitry underneath. I will link up with the hangar's security systems and check for any signs of interference. Stranger, scout up ahead and find the source of the noise. Wraithblade, Back Alley, you will be the backup - once the rogue Overed has been located, neutralize them as quickly and efficiently as possible." Then, he opened the subvocal feed. "Stricken, come on down to the southernmost hangar's basement floor. We may have need of your talents." Lastly, after a moment, he also opened a line to Blood Bath. "Blood Bath, there is no more time for grief. The situation continues to escalate, and if we do not intervene, more innocent civilian lives may be lost. The UGN, and the world, requires your talents."

With the hangar's circuitry exposed, Ra'id immediately set to work. A robot in the shape of a scorpion stunt one of the cables, providing him with an input terminal of sorts, as well as access to the electric signals coursing through the wiring. The first order of business was determining whether the hangar had any automated defenses, and if so, whether they could be reprogrammed to serve the unit.

"As a matter of fact, yes. There may still be multiple Overed in the area. Should you come across another Balor, it will be your duty to keep their powers under control while the other agents surround and subdue them. Exercise extreme caution with your powers - in these circumstances, collateral damage is completely unacceptable. We will not be responsible for any further civilian casualties. Understood?"

At the same time, Foucault's replica voice transmitted a message to Bohn for him. "Good. Blood Bath, we have reasons to believe there are more Tempest soldiers within the bowels of the hangar. Your new companion will be very valuable if we need to defuse the situation. Join up with the rest of the unit and protect him at all costs. Ex Machina out."

Hacking the system! Black Dog [d8]=5.

It doesn't take long for your suspicions of a Black Dog to be confirmed. The computer system has clearly been compromised but there's no sign of physical access anywhere. The intruder clearly was more concerned about shutting down systems than suborning them. The base does have several automated defenses, as well as a suite of well-hidden security cameras but all of them have been fried...not merely shut down but fragged with a power surge. At the very least this means that no one will be deploying these forces against you but unfortunately they can't be taken over as well, nor can you get a good look at what's going on now. However, you do get two pieces of useful information.

First, the intruders haven't bothered to wipe the video log of the cameras and so you get a good glimpse of the intruders in the half-minute or so it took them to enter the secure area, transform the guards and cripple the security system. There are two: a young woman in a simple dress who clearly is the one who transformed the guards, with merely a wave of her hand. Solaris without a doubt. The other is a Westerner dressed in a military manner with short-cropped hair. You notice that he's carrying an unusual weapon: the design is similar to Tempest's "man-portable" rail-guns. However, its missing the back-pack sized capacitor bank and has no visible power source at all.

Second, you learn that there is a second line of automated defenses: high grade, semi-autonomous security robots, code-named "Pit Bulls". These robots are still connected to the security grid but have been suborned and are operating in fully autonomous mode.

The robots are Awakened level opponents, equipped with light armor and weaponry.

Stranger
Let's see...Sensing Danger [d6]= 6 and Nothing Gets By Her=16. Ruh-roh!

Creeping noiselessly along the corridor, past the bloody mess that was Tempest's second line of defense. The corridor takes a short right where it, after about 5 meters, opens into a larger room. Security cameras line the walls but they're clearly inactive...you can even see wisps of smoke rising from one.

The room beyond is quite the scene. Its clearly a research lab of some kind. Along the left side of the room are several computer terminals, lab tables and a mess of documents. On the right side of the room are large clear cylinders of some kind, maybe glass or plastic. Inside the cylinders are what you would assume are test subjects of some kind. Several of them are quite obviously gjaum, and they're also very obviously dead. Several have left claw-marks or gouges in the inside of the cylinder and most appear to be leaking various fluids from the eyes and mouths. There are also what appears to be the corpses of normal humans, most naked but a few wearing the ragged remains of everyday clothing. One of the cylinders closest to the entrance contains a living person, apparently human, and clearly terrified. The young boy (he looks like he'd be in high school) has pushed himself against the far side of his cylinder and is curled into a fetal crouch.

The center of the room has a collection of people who were presumably Tempest staff. Most wear white lab coats but you spot a military uniform among them. You recognize the face and figure of Colonel Kurt Austin, the high ranking military brass who arrived at the base a few days ago (the one whose laptop you managed to sneak a peak at). They're all alive and imprisoned in a net of thick, woody vines. The vines are sprouting from the dead bodies of several uniformed men, sporting large-caliber gunshot wounds. Piled in front of the collection of vined-up hostages are several metal cylinders...you're not sure what they are but they're marked with multiple large "biohazard" symbols.

Standing between the doorway and the imprisoned Tempest staff are two out of place individuals

They're clearly in control of the situation, and flanking them are half a dozen of Tempest's "Pit Bull" security drones, heavily armored combat robots about 8 feet tall.

You're about to back out so you can report the situation to your allies when the girl turns her head in your direction slightly. Her reaction is minimal but one of the corpses near the door rapidly desiccates, producing dozens of thorn-studded and ropy vines which lash out at you, attempting to snare you.

But weakened by resisting the disease and distracted by the hostages, she found soon found herself hopelessly tangled. At once, she fell limp and unresisting, taking in the scene and noting every detail. She had been caught, but being caught had always been a potentiality. As she was, she could still do her job. However, with a Black Dog presumably on-site, she couldn't risk her communicator - too much chance of interception.

Luckily, as a Hanuman, she had other options. She filled her lungs to bursting with air, then filled the air with an earsplitting roar.

The vine attack will be Seizing Control so no damage, just holding you tight.

The imprisoned Tempest staff cringe from the massive volume in the enclosed space. Even the woman winces slightly at the sound. The hulking westerner remains stoic however. Meanwhile the vines dig their thorns even deeper into your flesh, not enough to shred your elastic flesh but the net of thorny vines is a surprisingly effective trap.

The woman smirks slightly, "Well Yuri, it seems we have an intruder...and it seems he's brought friends. We're almost done here so could you be a dear and help hold them off for just a little while." The military-looking brute simply nods and hefts his impressively sized gun and gestures to the robots who also raise their guns to cover the entrance.

Stricken
I assume you're trying to be stealthy, so lets see...Nothing Gets By Her [d10]=9 and Sensing Danger [d6]=7.

Moving slowly in your field of warped space you enter the room. Several weapons are pointed right at you as you come through the door but fortunately your stealth field seems to be holding and no one opens fire. The one with the fancy looking cannon scowls slightly as though suspicious but he still doesn't seem to spot you.

Initiative rolls. We'll assume that since Stricken and Wraithblade are in place already they're automatically at the top of the initiative chart. Yuri and the robots are holding to fire on anyone who comes through the door so they'll be able to do that.

"But of course," Ex Machina murmured, as he ran through the base's remaining systems. "Two Overed, six heavy duty combat robots and a hostage situation...simple enough." Having devised a plan, he stood up followed the trail his unit had left behind.

"Agents, I am about to draw the Pit Bulls' gunfire away from the entrance. Hold position, but prepare to enter the room on my mark," he broadcast, while tinkering with a few of his remaining minions with a multitool. As he reached the entrance, he did not say a word...

...And instead simply walked through it, casually throwing his modified creations away to the side as he entered the killzone. It was a suicidal move...or it would have been if he had not tinkered with the innards of his minions, to transform them into powerful magnets that would draw all gunfire away from the entrance for a few, precious seconds with attractive force.

"The way forward is clear," he announced, as he adjusted his coat and raised a long, thin finger to gesture towards the two terrorists. "Terminate them."

Oh Team-Up rules, you're so broken!

Technically involving Blood Bath means the team-up would occur after creepy lady since he's last on initiative, but consider his contribution is a relative drop in the bucket at this point I'll just assume that the Team-up kicks off before Back Alley's turn with a total of merely 50.

Lets see how bad the carnage is...

First, fire against Ex Machina Robots all miss and So Does Yuri. Now, lets see if anyone lives...

Robots: Busted
Creepy Woman: is down
Big russian bites the dust

Ex Machina
For kicks and maximum detail the following events shall unfold from Ex Machina's point of view

You walk into the room, flanked by your buzzing minions. Most of them will likely fry from the intense magnetic field, but they don't need to last much longer anyway and there are always replacements. You step into the room and allow your mind to go into "slow motion" mode, picking up every detail: the prisoners, the unidentified canisters (the labels indicate some kind of artificial virus perhaps?), the tubes containing obvious experimental victims. You can even make out the larger fonts on the terminals flanking each cylinder. The ones containing Gjuam corpses read "TEST FAILED: NO REVERSION", the ones containing human corpses read "PARTIAL SUCCESS: LETHAL REVERSION". The one containing the single, living human is the only one which reads in bright green "SUCCESS! KEEP QUARANTINED"

Then you turn your attention to secondary concerns: the bullets flying towards you. The Pit Bulls were no great concern...you could quote the schematics of their weapons and targeting systems from memory and your little servants are more than capable of deflecting the spray of bullets. The rail gun pointed your way by the muscular man is more of a concern: you see a sudden surge of electricity traveling from the man's arms into the gun itself and it looks somewhat more intense than your calculations accounted for...the gun must have been modified to handle the higher voltages. But that only means you need to break stride slightly to make sure that you are just a few inches from where the heavy copper slug will be as your minions tug it ever-so-slightly off course. It slams into the wall, accompanied by another flickering of lights as the magnetics from the rail gun interfere with local electronics.

That threat dealt with, your allies move into the room: wraithblade steps out of the shadows behind the two overeds and Stricken phases into view just as Back Alley rushes in behind you. Your mental "simulation" of their strategy assures you that their attack will be devastatingly effective in a matter of seconds. While you ponder that you realize that you recognize the two Overeds. Not personally, but you've seen files on them. Both are members of a local False Hearts cell, although the entire membership hasn't been determined yet. The woman is Poison Orchid and the man (a russian according to your files) goes by his birth name: Yuri Volkov. Mentally perusing their files is encouraging: both are dangerous but are also known to fairly level-headed and reasonable. Overwhelming force is likely to convince them to surrender, perhaps hoping to be rescued.

As these thoughts spin through your head things play out exactly as you thought they would. Wraithblade dashes through the enemy along an impossible trajectory just a moment after Stricken's entropic assault bursts open several coolant vents. The robots are eliminated first, literally falling to pieces, and Stranger's distraction provides just the tiniest bit of confusion needed for Stricken and Wraithblade to descend upon the two Overeds. Poison Orchid wraps herself in a cocoon of vines but they're sliced in half effortlessly by Tchernobog. Meanwhile Volkov raises one arm which transforms into a massive, scaled "shield", displaying his Chimera abilities. Stricken's annihilation field flays layers of scale and hardened horn from the shield like a candle under a heat gun, exposing raw muscle and bone underneath.

The two are near collapse already and you're calculating the odds of them choosing to escalate the conflict when things stop going as planned.

The first sign of trouble is when your computer helpfully "bings" with a "signal located" message from the tracker robot that was meant to follow the girl into timeless space. Signal located...GPS says 20 meters.

The second is when the shockwave from Stricken's unleashed power proves to be somewhat more destructive than planned. One of the exploding coils is clearly carrying something more volatile than coolant. The blast itself is no danger, but it shatters the clear cylinders (probably weakened already from the battle and the coolant) and there's an audible rush of equalizing pressure.

That's when it hits...something is wrong. Something is very wrong. The first sensation is intense pain. You try and tell your nerves to tone down the signal so you can perform damage control...but they aren't responding. In fact, everything seems to be speeding up. Events are no longer moving in slow motion and your normally excellent parallel processing is starting to derail. There's a loud ringing in your ears. Your emotions and instincts suddenly kick back in with a vengeance and your thoughts are clouded with panic. You have trouble breathing. You can see your companions are suffering similar symptoms: Stricken falls to the ground, Stranger's skin is writhing out of control and both Back Alley and Wraithblade fall to their knees. Your eyes are filling with blood. Poison Orchid and Volkov are both similarly affected, maybe even worse given the injuries they've sustained so far. Both are writhing on the ground. Your legs have given out at some point, you're on the floor.

Your vision is dimmed so you can just barely see it when the ceiling crumples like aluminum foil. Sunlight pours through the hole and you can see the two False Hearts agents, the Tempest hostages and the cylinders rising into the air.

Then darkness descends.

Okay, this is what's known in GMing terms as a "dick move". If its any comfort this was planned when I wrote the scenario, its the only time this'll happen and there'll be some bonus XP in exchange. This officially marks the end of the first "session" of the game. I'll be posting XP and such as soon as I've had the opportunity to calculate it properly, feel free to roll for your corruption reduction from Loises. I'm taking the opportunity to make a few of the most obvious patches (looking at you Team Up rules) before we move on, I'll probably put things back in motion IC tomorrow evening.

And of course, don't worry, everyone's alive: just unconscious.

Looking over the rules issues I'm going to limit changes for now:

*Team Ups: As per suggestions Team Up rules will be broadly similar but treated as an Awakened-level Power instead of just something anyone can do. The Power costs 1 EP and lets you make a Trait roll (including your Syndrome Trait if you wish) and add the lowest die result to an ally's roll.

*Flawless: rerolls both dice of a Trait roll (doesn't include rerolling things like External Traits).

Definitely other things that need work but as far as making changes mid-stride this is as far as I'm going for now.

Why is Bohn’s family a bunch of Gjuam in an American Base? Why is everyone acting normally to such a revelation? Did they KNOW something about his family that Bohn don’t? Is there something special about his family!? Can he be involved in a conspiracy that stretches all the way longer than he can imagine? Longer than… A train!?

Note: Repurchase from Lost Family Loise.

Loise: Hippocratic Oath (Standard/Malpractice)
An oath that Bohn has sworn when he become a real doctor. An ethical oath that stretches back to the day of ancient Greek where doctors starts to give a drat about other people. He shall do no harm... As a doctor.

Note: Related to Trait upgrade.

Loise: Nuremberg Code (Ethic/Crime)
The Nuremberg Code is a set of research ethics principles for human experimentation set as a result of the Subsequent Nuremberg Trials at the end of the Second World War. Bohn has sworn to this code when he becomes full fledges Hematology scientist (and doctor) and he do not tolerate unethical human experiments… Without a very good reason

Note: Related to Trait upgrade.

[Stranger]
(19 XP, eh? I'm thinking I'll drop 1 for 10% Corruption decrease, and the rest on Signature powers! Diversity!

As for actual mechanics, I'm pretty foggy - I just want to add to my toolbox of powers across various power levels. I'll toss out some ideas, but leave the implementation up to you!
  • Bio-Power Armor: Stranger forms himself into power armor - for someone else! I'm envisioning it grants speed and maybe disguise capabilities, as well as defense, but nothing explicitly offensive. Maybe Stranger automatically takes damage for the wearer up to a threshold but ejects just short of actually dying?
  • Shrink Down: Stranger can shrink down to a smaller scout form - maybe take more damage on a turn where it's active, but maybe a bonus to Denser Than He Looks?
  • Some sort of attack that has additional effect (damage or otherwise) against a target restrained with Seizing Control - goes well with his Waiting Maw attack
  • Consume: Some kind of attack where I can drain knowledge or the like from an unwilling target by eating them or something equally gross?
  • Any other ideas you have! I'm pretty slanted towards the Shape Shifting Goes Fast aspects of my Syndromes, but this is exactly the time when I should be branching out into the more esoteric interpretations.

Write up and Lois rolls coming later on - I'll probably just edit them in here.)

Let's see...

*Body Suit Power: Lets say Inhuman and 2 Ongoing EP. Lets say it transforms you into an External Trait for another character (rank based on your Syndrome), which covers granting your speed, durability and (within size limits) the ability to disguise the subject. In addition you can share EP with the person you're attached to and any damage the you-wearer suffers can be divided between the two of you.

*Shrinking yourself isn't too crazy a feat. We could say Inhuman, 1 Ongoing EP. Lets say compacting yourself down to tiny size doubles roll results based on stealth, fitting in places, being hard to hit, etc. But cuts roll results for things like inflicting damage, feats of strength, resisting undodgable attacks, etc. in half.

*Constrictor attack of some sort...Hmm, how about something similar to Cross Burst, just with the caveat that you need to have Seized Control to use it. Awakened Level, 1 EP. When you make your attack against someone you've Seized Control and succeed you can also compare the lower die result (with bonuses) to the opponent's lower die result as a second attack.

*Memory digestion: Inhuman, 2 EP. By "drinking" the neural fluids of an Extra (killing or rendering them brain dead) you can devour their memories. If you keep the 2 EP ongoing you can use your Syndrome Trait as a substitute for any learned skill they had (so eating a sniper lets you duplicate their ranged attack skill). Once you stop spending the ongoing EP then the memories just become regular memories that you can recall as normal (things like passcodes, personal details, etc).

*I'll try and think of some interesting alternative powers. Maybe you could Agent Smith people? Transforming defeated Troops or Extras into clones of yourself by infecting their bodies with your own cells. The clones wouldn't be very powerful but they'd be under your control and you could probably share senses and the like. Another fun Exile trick from the original Double Cross book was dropping body parts that can be remote controlled.

I also like stuff that I can use at Awakened that can scale up with later power levels, though I'm having difficulty thinking about what would be appropriate for that.)

Wraithblade XP usage

Right, I think I'll just buy that one Power we talked about in IRC, Oriongates:

Slash Through Time: Via an application of his Balor powers, William can store a temporal echo of himself to be released later.

[Awakened, 1 EP Ongoing]: Wraithblade uses his action to perform an attack roll, which can later on be added to another attack roll when he stops paying the upkeep.

Unique power is 6 XP, leaving me at 7.

19 xp to spend!

First of all I'm buying a new [d6] External Trait, A Thing that will let me tune and manipulate my aura better.
The Idea is that it the device is something Belcry will have cooked up for me off-screen, so I won't be getting it officially until we've had some time off / we find ourselves back at HQ.

---

Secondly I'm getting a new waifu Loise.
Branch Chief Belcry (Shame/Senpai)
The rising superstar of the UGN, Branch Chief Ra'id Belcry is everything an Overed could hope to aspire too.
Dashing, intelligent and kind, the Neumann was also one of the first people to ever show 'Stricken' any sort of human compassion, the first to see her for something other than the carrier of her accursed affliction.
Stricken is deeply ashamed that her actions at the Yakota Airbase Incident could have derailed his Perfect Plans and has resolved to fight even harder in the future, hoping that maybe if she works really hard at being a better person, perhaps she will one day be worthy of his attention.

---

Thirdly, I want to get some sort of new and cool power, but I'm not sure which one to pick or even what power-level or cost they would be.
I have a few ideas, all combat oriented, but I'm open for suggestions along the lines of thematic Utility Powers that could be used for something outside of combat as well, preferably at awakened level.

  • Telekillnetic Field: Detonation + Affliction. Stricken unleashes all of her power to devastating effect, causing [insert fluff] all enemies around her/target area to take damage both instant and ongoing unless they save vs the hazard. Basic AoEDPS.

  • Counter-Defence: Counter Attack + Intercept to get one of my team-mates out of danger.

  • Obvious Threat: Detonation + Seize Control rolled of off my Unnerving Presence. Works at lower power levels in exchange for not doing any damage. Basically a taunt to get people to attack me instead of my more fragile team-members.

  • My Only Friend is a Black Hole: The End stuck around or proved impossible to completely banish. Now a black hole follows me around wherever I go like a lovesick puppy. Acts as a servant/guest star I guess?
Could work as an external trait too, although that would be out of my price-range.

---

Getting a new external trait, a loise and a signature power should leave me at one xp left, which I might use to reduce corruption. But before I do that however I want to make sure how much corruption I can actually get rid?
The rules states that if a loise was somehow involved in the mission, you get 2d10 instead of 1d10 reductionwise. What counts as involved?
For example my losies include UGN Accommodations and the UGN itself. Both where written or mentioned about (albeit briefly), is that enough? Does that mean i get 5d10 reduction instead of the regular 3d10?

For Loises here are some good guidelines:

If the Loise is an independent NPC then all it takes to count as "involved" is to have them in a Scene, endangered by a fight or otherwise significantly a part of the story. Simply saying hello or mentioning them isn't enough but it doesn't take a lot for them to show up.

If the Loise is a PC then you've got a higher bar to clear (since they're going to be in pretty much every scene no matter what) so you need to have a Scene that significantly highlights one of your emotions. So for instance, if Belcry gave you a big dressing down because of a significant screw-up that'd qualify as triggering your Shame, getting you a bigger bonus...likewise if you do something really great and get him to notice you...

For places/things/abstract concepts those are treated more or less like PCs. You've got to have a significant Scene focusing on your relationship with your Loise. Being locked up in your accommodations for instance while you "cool down" to avoid damaging something could qualify, but not simply mentioning them or going to bed like normal.

Power-wise here are my thoughts:

Telekillnetic field is basically a Combo, so that's totally fine. You might want to throw Projection into the mix as well to allow a ranged attack.

For Counter-defense, here's an idea to throw out..."Orbital Reflection" allows you to draw ranged attacks towards you and if you successfully defend, redirect them at their attacker. Inhuman level, Ongoing 1 EP draws in any [Nearby] ranged attacks aimed at allies so they target you instead. A successful defense is treated as a counterattack (including attacks that target you). Each extra Ongoing EP increases the range by one step.

Obvious Threat...hmm. I'd say instead of Seizing Control a better basis might be the Obstruction Power, basically creating an Obstruction (using Unnerving Presence instead of your Syndrome) to require those who can perceive you to target you instead of others, or beat the obstacle with some kind of willpower related Trait. Say Inhuman level, 1 Ongoing EP.

My Only Friend Is a Black Hole: This would probably, as written, work better as an External Trait if its going to be a more or less indefinite feature. If you want to make it a power you could create a sort of independent character (similar to Bram Stoker's Red Servant). Same power level and cost, but without the ability to create a customized servant each time, instead come up with the standard 3 Traits (one d8, two d6).

I'll go ahead and roll for everyone's Corruption reduction (and increase) and make a new IC post and we'll get rolling again. No one's at risk of going Gjaum currently so we'll roll both together.

Everyone
You awaken in a white room...well, mostly. Several steel plates have been bolted to one of the far corners of the room, where Stricken is laying (in the middle of a roughly "her" shaped patch of corrosion). The room is lit with soft fluorescent lights and seems to have been designed as a clean room or quarantine space. There are no obvious doors but one wall consists of an extremely thick sheet of glass or plastic and beyond it is an observation room of some kind.

A few seconds are enough to determine that your strength and abilities have returned to you (if the condition of Stricken's "bed" wasn't enough evidence) and there's no sign of the symptoms that rendered you unconscious: no pain, bleeding, confusion, etc. None of you have any of your clothing or items, all of you seem to be dressed in hospital gowns (expect Stricken whose clothing seems to have been crudely fashioned from heavy plastic tarps of some kind..and is already becoming threadbare. a few additional outfits are folded up next to her).

Two men are watching you from behind the glass. One is a stranger, obviously a Westerner and notably uncomfortable looking. The other you recognize: Shinya Yamanaka. He is one of the head administrators underneath Chief Belcry, and what the UGN refers to as an "Altered Agent" (or "Double A"), a normal human being who has been modified through cybernetic augmentation. Shinya's modifications are largely invisible, just a few surgical scars where his skull had been opened up and computerized "sub-processors" added in to complement his already prodigious mental facilities. Although he lacks the raw ability of a true Neumann Overed, his loyalty, training and reliability have made him indispensable to City N's branch.

Noticing as you all stir he approaches the glass and speaks into a thin mouthpiece and his voice can be heard amplified by unseen speakers behind the walls. "I'm glad to see the stimulant has worked. Branch Chief, agents, I'm sure you have a lot of questions but please its imperative right now that you not attempt to leave the room or damage its integrity. You've been exposed to an extremely dangerous retrovirus and there is still the possibility of contagion if decontamination is not handled with extreme care. Do you understand?"

The passage from unconsciousness to awareness was not a gradual one for Ra'id. One moment, he was out cold. The next, his colour-inverted eyes snapped open, and he immediately pushed himself up and into a sitting position.

"Agent Yamanaka," he said, giving him a nod of recognition. "I assume we have been returned to headquarters. Status report on our affliction, if you please. I assume Rafflesia has been already been contacted? She would see this as an opportunity to conduct valuable research, and would be a great asset in mapping out the impact of this retrovirus on our genome." 'Rafflesia' was, of course, none other than Yurika Himemiya, one of the top investigators of the Renegade Virus on the UGN's payroll, who possessed an unusual fascination for Renegade-related research. As a partial Solaris Overed, she was uniquely well suited to test out cures to their condition...whatever their condition might be. "And who is this visitor? Does Tempest wish to speak with us about the disaster at the airbase already?" The emphasis the Branch Chief put upon the word made clear the full extent of his displeasure with the situation. This was not the first time he had been faced with a quarantine situation, and his memories of the last incident were not fond in the slightest. He would have to debrief his agents quite thoroughly once this matter was taken care of. He could not, would not tolerate a debacle of such proportions again. Not on his watch.

Shinya smiles slightly at your words, just as the unidentified man winced at your words.

"Unfortunately there have been some complications," Shinya types quickly into a small tablet computer as he speaks, "You are actually still in the Tempest facilities beneath Yokata Air Base and while I can assure you that we are keeping Rafflesia apprised of everything she is unable to be present with us at this time. The viral agent was too dangerous to attempt to transport you offsite and it is especially...attracted...for lack of a better word to those whose systems are rich in the Renegade Virus. After the incident Tempest has handed complete control of these facilities to the UGN but until we can confirm the area is completely clear of the hostile viral agent. Your recovery is the first sign that the process is nearing completion."

Shinya nods to the man next to him, "Chief Belcry, allow me to introduce Robert Wagner, acting head researcher on the so-called "Schism" project." Wagner bobs his head awkwardly and says in passable Japanese "Hello, I...um...I can only apologize for the incidents that led us to this situation. I can assure you that Tempest is committed to assisting the UGN in anyway possible with containing the situation."

He coughs awkwardly, "I have been...um...authorized to disclose the nature of the Schism project in the interest of renewed trust and cooperation. I'm sure you have a lot of questions."

In response to Yamanaka's words, the Branch Chief merely nodded. "Acceptable parameters of operation. It will do." Then, he turned his attention to Wagner. "Start from the beginning. What is Schism, why does it exist, and who is a part of it?"

Wagner shifts uncomfortably, "Schism is the current and most successful incarnation of one of Tempest's longest running research projects: an effective cure for the Renegade virus. I'm sure such research comes as no surprise and I'm certain the UGN pursues its own research in these areas." You detect a definite defensive tone.

"Schism was an attempt to use an artificially designed retrovirus, patterned after the Renegade virus itself in order to attack the Renegade directly and attempt to purge it from the host's system. The Schism virus is a natural antagonist to the Renegade and exposure to Renegade particles actually accelerates Schism's growth and communicability. Experiments with Schism have reached the point where we have achieved a successful complete purge of the Renegade from a subject's system in about 15% of cases."

Shinya pointedly clears his throat and Wagner grimaces, "Unfortunately the stress put on the subject's system by the conflict between the Renegade and Schism infections has led to a...ah, over 90% fatality rate in those where the Renegade has activated." He seems to gather his remaining dignity and continues, " Of course, we have not performed testing on those with passive Renegade infection such as the general population...but our projections indicate a likely 70 to 90% fatality rate in such cases. Fortunately you all were only exposed to the remnants of the virus remaining in the cylinders after multiple decontamination passes so clearly your systems were able to fight off the weakened Schism virus in minimal time."

"Obviously Schism was far from complete but we were confident that with time and research material we could eventually reduce danger to those with active infections to acceptable levels and danger to those with passive infections to nearly zero." He sighs, "Honestly, we weren't sure how long it would take to perfect, but...but it was hope! Something that could take us back from the brink we've been driving towards when the Renegade pandemic went world-wide"

"Our intentions were good and we felt that if we went through the proper channels the UGN might quash the research. So we set up the facility under the airbase here and used what test subjects we could acquire in order to continue perfecting the Schism virus. Because of the risk of explosive contamination we couldn't risk Overed resources here...so I'm afraid we were unprepared for the attack."

Shinya cuts in, "In short, sir, the assault on the base resulted in the capture of the majority of Schism research staff, Colonel Austin and, most importantly, the loss of almost all of the currently extant Schism virus."

"Which is now in False Hearts hands." The Branch Chief finished for him. "Which presents an interesting conundrum. This retrovirus is anathema to everything False Hearts stands for - the free, unchecked proliferation of the Renegade. Were this one of its most idealistic cells, we could rest easy knowing that the retrovirus has simply been destroyed." Adjusting his gown slightly, Ra'id gave the two men a meaningful glance. "But we will likely not be so lucky. Which means we must think of it as one of two things: a weapon, or a tool to further False Hearts' agenda. In other words...we can soon expect extremely lethal terrorist attacks on UGN-controlled buildings to annihilate our Overed staff and leave us defenseless against large-scale terrorist operations, or, if we are lucky, an extremely potent agent through which to awaken the Renegade worldwide by using Schism's rapid replication system and replacing its primary function with any one of the several Renegade-amplifying viruses on record." He gave his words a moment to sink in. "In other words, gentlemen, we are faced with a potential doomsday scenario. Which means it is time for me to take proper responsibility for this operation." His voice took in a different quality, as did his eyes - it was hard to tell with Ra'id's bizarre looks, but there seemed to be a glint to them now. "Agent Yamanaka, by your words I must assume we do still have a few remaining traces of Schism in this compound. I want them delivered to a suitable lab immediately to begin the process of synthesizing larger quantities of the virus for use in eventual negotiations. In addition, I want a message sent to all our Illegal contacts and double agents instructing them to set up a rendezvous so we can begin work on tracing the terrorist cell's current location. I also want this quarantine lifted as quickly as possible without endangering any further lives, even if it leaves me and my agents still at risk. Mr. Wagner," he said, turning his attention to the Tempest liaison, "I want full access to Tempest's military might as well, as well as its best available Renegade-hunting agents. This mission will require precision and finesse, but if unexpected factors come into play, overwhelming firepower may be necessary as a fallback." Raising his hand, he snapped his fingers. "These are the first steps of our plan for Operation Black Death, gentlemen. Carry them out. We have no time to waste."

The last thing Stricken remembers is the coolant tubing rupturing and not in fact being coolant, then flashes of destruction and pain.
When she wakes up covered in tarp she assumes the worst, and when she through her adrenaline-filled, half-conscious state hears Belcrys words she assumes worse still.

Shame Obstruction: 2d10o10k1 = 8
[d6] Jaded: 2d6o6k1+1 = 6

Panic Wild and unrestrained rolled through her system. Incredible shame; her rash actions had led to the mission being an utter failure, to everyone's life coming in direct danger. To Belcry himself being infected with some new strain of virus.
Renegade bubbled inside her as willpower was eroded by self-doubt. The Lifeline Sensor sent spikes of sensory data to the nearest UGN monitoring station (which unbeknownst to her was just a meter or two of reinforced plastic-alloys away)
and automated mechanisms within and without responded by flooding her body with chemicals meant to calm and deescalate.

[d6] Jaded - Flawless: 2d6o6k1+1 = 8

The flush-release cocktail of downers injected directly into her bloodstream was just enough to jolt her back into unconsciousness, where horrible nightmares could do the job of sorting through her troubled mind.

To everyone else, it would have looked like a sudden spasm. The poor sleeping girl thrashing in her sleep, waking up with a start a wild panic in her eyes. Opening her mouth as if to scream but the only sound the hiss some hidden pneumatic syringe, followed by complete collapse.
The indenture around her had grown several inches in the scant few seconds of her lucidity and the steel plating would need replacing sooner rather than later, (the maintenance crew would require additional risk pay) but at least she hadn't melted through the floor entirely.
Containment was still in effect.

Buying the Loise and the external trait for 12 XP, still thinking on the new power. I should have 7 XP left for now.
