Wraithblade/William Jones

William was in the middle of his bidaily ritual of checking and maintaining Tchernobog for any possible accidental blemish. Truth be told, the whole thing was largely unnecessary, and he almost never found even minor imperfection. He did the movements regardless, and would not budge on the habit. His concentrated reverie was not to last undisturbed however, as a familiar ring followed by a bubbly voice started to flood in from his earpiece. Alice.

William gave no outwardly apparent signs of actually listening, merely continuing his work without even a twitch in expression. Once the briefing was complete, however, he did deign to respond.

"I'll wait for them."

Right, rolling [d6] Perfect Intuition to predict based on given info on where the truck is going and when it will arrive, and then just be sort of waiting for them at the start of our ambush. William's personal plans will be subject to the Branch Chief's or other higher authority's override, naturally.

Wraithblade/William Jones

William stared down at the trucks impassively, hair swaying ever so slightly in the breeze. And if his face was flat, so was his voice; smooth and without inflection.

"In position", he began his report to the Branch Chief and UGM Mission Control, "Target ETA 3 minutes." William let his left hand rest gently on the hilt of Tchernobog, sparing the blade a sideways glance without actually changing his facing.

"Awaiting kill order."

As the very slight background static cut off, signaling the end of the radio transmission, William took a better look at his target. Tempest. He had been on enough ops concerning them that a non-Neumann would most likely have lost count by now. They were skilled and professional, and not prone to foolish mistakes. Not an entity to take overtly lightly. Therefore, he had to question the decision to transport three Gjaum in normal military transport trucks, escorted by mere two light attack helicopters, at least according to reports. The helicopters would be ill-suited to intervene in a close quarters cash-and-grab, unable to really maneuver or stop a ground based assault without infantry support...

William stood perfectly still, his eyes lazily drifting from car to car, from wall to wall. Perhaps Tempest had truly judged inconspicuousness and civilian presence to be their best defense in this particular operation. But then again, perhaps not...

______________

So, I'm not super clear on actions and turns. Can those of us whose actions you already rolled make new ones now, or will they have to wait for the people who are yet to act? I'm rolling [d6] Perfect Intuition regardless, since I have not yet performed an action requiring a roll this turn (if this is illegal, the GM is naturally allowed to disregard all this!). William will use this trait to see if his ~Neumann-sense~ is tingling to warn him of a potential ambush, or that things with this scenario are not quite as they appear (his intuition in this case based on former encounters with Tempest and general foreknowledge of their MO, and on the way the trucks and other known Tempest agents in the area are acting).

Perfect Intuition [1d6]=5

And rerolling that 1 with Flawless we get:

Perfect Intuition [1d6]=5

Leaving to the GM's discretion whether or not my style applies here for a +2

Also, left a little bait there in my post for either Belcry or UGN Mission Control to designate targets for me so I can get those sweet, sweet knack bonuses.

Question! Does the initiative roll count as a round? Or is it considered part of the first round of actions? I mainly ask for EP purposes: Does our EP refill for the first actual action we take, or is the EP pool of the initiative roll shared with the EP pool of the first combat action?

Ya, I agree that Aetherstep, if it ever counts for initiative, would be in situations where careful maneuvering and warp-trickery could be just as good as pure speed for determining who gets the first strike in, such as a melee duel. As for initiative in other situations, [d6] Perfect Intuition might be something that could work, in the same vein as [d6] Preparation and Foreknowledge. No matter, since I doubt it would have made a difference here. But anyways, I'll just roll my defense here to get it out of the way.

William stared at the Gjaum. It was not the first one he had ended, nor would it be the last.

Its chest was rising, throat bulging, jaws moving. It was about to spit. Acid most likely. Meaning a single projectile. A trivial issue to deal with.

When the thing let loose, William took a step towards the projectile, and simply stepped behind it. Another step, and he was on the truck, behind the creature, Tchernobog radiating its dull blackness in the appropriate battle-stance.

OKAY everyone, tactics chat! This thing basically gets to double all its defensive rolls against us, meaning that a bunch of weak attacks will be casually shrugged off. Instead what we should do, is stack as much bonuses as we can on one or two big attacks so that we can actually pierce its defenses and deal some damage. Since I'm the biggest damage dealer already at the scene, I propose the rest of you at attack range (Stranger, Back Alley, Blood Bath) use a a bunch of distraction or binding abilities on it to boost my attack as per the Team Up rules, on the fluff grounds that it can't defend itself as well if it is dealing with other stuff.

William regarded the momentarily distracted gjaum before him. No sneer was present on his face, but a cold sort of disdain could almost be felt radiating from him.

For many, the gjaum were terrifying. Abhorrent abominations, capable of who knows what. Terrible creatures armed to the teeth with a variety of biological weaponry, each more insidious than the last. Beings to be feared.

This was not the case for William. When he looked upon gjaum, he saw twisted flesh and clouded judgment. He saw the remains of a shattered will, too feeble to handle the gifts it was entrusted with, incapable of resisting base impulse. Indeed, he saw nothing but weakness. The weakness of a base beast.

And beasts had to be put down.

William angled Tchernobog in a downward angle, aiming for the upper back of the gjaum. Aiming to pierce its heart so that it might pump tainted blood no more.

Blademaster [d10] + Tchernobog [d8]=26

There is a mistake here. Therefore the Gjaum should not get a defensive roll against him, but only against my eventual attack, which currently stands at either 40 or 42, depending on whether or not Back Alley's Style applies.

Refusing the Gjaum the dignity of even looking back at its remains, William grabbed the Titanium rope and allowed himself to be pulled up to the command helicopter. Slowly, almost theatrically, he sheathed Tchernobog, looking Ex Machina directly in the eyes all the while, his expression unwavering and unblinking. A second passes. Two seconds.

"Branch Chief. Mission Control."

William offered Stricken nothing but a quick, if steady, sideways glance, his eyes narrowing ever so slightly before returning to their usual form.

William turned to face Stricken, more visibly this time. He did not smile, nor did he frown. In fact, his face did not deviate from that completely unreadable expression typical for so many of the Neumann breed. However, his posture seemed to relax just a bit, his grip on Tchernobog's handle a tiny bit less firm. He had worked with the girl before, even though the occasions were rare taken how they were usually sent for completely different types of missions. He had seen her being escorted down the halls of the base, and walked past her room, if it even could be called that, but rarely seen her face-to-face. Neither had they really spoken, not besides the strict and pragmatic in-mission radio messages. And even those were usually relayed by Mission Control.

Perhaps it was time to break the ice?

"..."

"Your contribution has been noted as well, agent", he spoke in his usual clear and even tone.

"Perhaps we will work together in the future..." William's gaze wandered off to the side, his grip on his blade tightening once more, something akin to remorse flickering on his face for but a moment before it returned to its usual demeanor.

"...if all goes well."

Then again, perhaps not.

Even though William stood stock still, his subconscious was hard at work. Cross-referencing the style of munition with the chosen target, tactics, and time of assault, as well as a hundred other related variables he had picked up during his service in the field and the UGN Intelligence operation rooms, his mind started to form a hunch on the possible identity of the perpetrators.

William's eyes shrank into pinpricks even before the shockwave had the time to reach his eardrums. This then, was the reason they kept her in such a tight leash. The agent was obviously highly unstable. William had known far too many of those. He tightened his grip on Tchernobog.

William spoke in his radio, with Stricken on the list of receivers. "The UGN agent-arbitrated unilateral emergency protocol", Williams said, in a voice as even as always, but this time with a sharp, cutting edge, "applies during situations where 1.) Loss of essential", a cold sort of weight was given that particular word, "UGN personnel cannot otherwise reasonably be prevented. 2) Completion of essential objectives cannot otherwise be guaranteed. And 3.), in those situations only ever if the harm is judged to be much less than the gain."

"In all other scenarios," he continued, his voice slowing down to an ominous crawl, "the Agent is to Escalate only with explicit permission from their superiors."

William said no more, but his disapproval was clear to all.

William's eyes were locked at Stricken as the girl bolted towards the airbase, his leer one less of outright hostility, but more of somewhat condescending worry. It was the sort of look you might give a misbehaving student, fear for their future laced with patronizing contempt. It was highly unlike him to comment so directly on the doings of his fellow agents, but on the case of Escalation protocol he made an exception. He had been called upon to deal with one too many agents who had gambled on their willpower. And lost.

However, before William had the time to brood on this much longer, a familiar buzz in his ear grabbed his full attention. He listened to the Branch Chief's suggestion, furrowing his brow ever so slightly.

"A theoretical possibility", William spoke in careful tones. He was wholly unfamilair with using Tchernobog for non-combat applications. Combat was the only thing that had ever been asked of him, after all. "but would require extensive, specialized training, as well as Escalation levels of designation Oni or Youkai."

"Will attempt local space expansion instead."

William took command of a few UGN grunts to escort the vehicle to the nearest UGM safehouse. This sort of thing was not his specialty, so he doubted he would succeed, but he would attempt to carry out his order nevertheless.

He knew not why the Branch Chief had chosen to use him of all people on a task like this. But he had to admit. Being thought of as something more than just a mere weapon had a certain... charm.

"Orders succesfully executed", William intoned tersely into his radio. Then he headed out from the garage without further word, merely offering the UGM personnel a slight nod in acknowledgment. His standing orders were to stand by and wait until his help at the base was deemed necessary. And that's exactly what he would do.

William took position outside accurate firing range of the base, closed his eyes, and merely waited for order to intervene in silence.

Ex Machina had barely stopped vocalizing his order, when a voice suddenly intoned from behind him. Somehow, William had managed to appear when they weren't looking.

"The Girl", William's voice was calm and cold, "is strong. But unreliable. She needs to learn discipline."

Already, the girl had reached Escalation level Youkai without permission. William had known people like that. And they never ended well.

But that was an issue for another time. He had his orders, and he would perform. William stepped in front of Ex Machina and raised Tchernobog. He could hear the enemies advance. That is all he needed. William closed his eyes, and let his intuition guide his blade towards the first thing that dared appear.

William could hear the two closing in on him. One charging straight at him, the other circling around. A primitive pincer. William could think of over a dozen counters for exactly this situation in the fraction of a second he had to react.

Sidestep, downward slash.

Blademaster [d10] + Tchernobog [d8] COUNTERATTACK against the 9 [d8]=10

The charging gjaum hit nothing but air, and now had a nasty gash going diagonally through its chest from the left shoulder to the right side of its waist.

Reversal, horizontal guard stance to meet the oncoming blow from behind.

The gjaums claws met with the flat of Tchernobog, and could not reach William.

Blademaster [d10] + Tchernobog [d8] TOTAL DEFENSE against the 25=19

However, William hadn't had the opportunity to properly balance his stance against the gjaum, causing him to take flight by the force of the blow and slam back first into the walls of the tunnel. He could feel a couple ribs snapping, as well as some bleeding start. No matter. He had had much worse.

William faced the gjaum again, Tchernobog raised vertically in front of him. His stern demeanor remained unchanged, except for a faint trickle of blood flowing from the corner of his mouth.

With their momentary advantage no longer present, William struck away the blows of the Gjaum with contemptuous ease. They were fast, yes, and strong. But that is all they had. No technique, no skill. And that was why they would lose. Nevertheless, they were wasting his time. And the time of his superior.

It was time to end them.

"Guillotine", he intoned in a clear voice. If the other agents had read their mission brief, they knew now would be a good time to try and keep their respective gjaum as still as possible.

Whilst the gjaum flailed against his impenetrable defense in impotent frustration, William took quick stock of the battlefield, closed his eyes, and focused. He imagined all the scattered gjaum, their various locations and the spaces they inhabited.

William brought Tchernobog down in an overhead swing.

Space was relative. And right then, right there, eight spaces had become one. Just for one teeny, almost impossibly short moment. But nevertheless long enough to meet his blade.

Blademaster [d10] + Tchernobog [d8] MULTI-ATTACK against all 8 gjaum =16

________________

I did not even roll my defense against those blows, because I cannot even theoretically fail it with total defense (a minimum of 3 from the three dice I roll, +4 from my bonuses). So, just read that as William being extra contemptuous with the gjaum :v:

Also, multi-attacked all the gjaum with a +6 ( 4 from knack and style and 2 from Excellence), getting a 16. Frankensteins, an UGM designation for entities capable of artificially creating and occasionally even directing Gjaum were always trouble. Not something that could not be dealt with, but the actual dealing often led to considerable loss of life as well as being messy to boot.

William stood back up, momentarily turning towards Ex Machina to deliver his findings. "Frankenstein. Probably Solaris, perhaps Chimera."

He then turned to Bohn. "I am wounded. Can you assist, doctor?" No part of William's tone or mannerism seemed to indicate any sort of condolence towards the loss of family the poor doctor had just gone through.

...We danced the Mamushka while Nero fiddled, we danced the Mamushka at Waterloo. We danced the Mamushka for Jack the Ripper, and now, Fester Addams, this Mamushka is for you....
Wraithblade/William Jones - ER: 38% (Condition: 3/5, Awakened)

William stared into the darkness, addressing the branch chief without looking at him.

"Human cries of fear. Shall I intercept?"

Without a word, William moved to remove the paneling with just a few precise, exact cuts from his sword, carefully floating the panel aside with his Balor powers.

Blademaster [d10] + Tchernobog [d8] =11

William's gaze sharpened as if on instinct, his grip on Tchernobog tightening in readiness to unsheath. It was his time to intervene.

He closed his eyes and took a step forward.

Aetherstep [d6] =14

And he was there.

With an almost imperceptible spatial flicker, William was behind his opposition. It would not be long before he was noticed, but those few seconds were all that he needed. He placed Tchernonog on a horizontal stance, and visualised his opponents, robot and overed alike, all standing in a row in front of him, on the side where he held his blade.

Then he merely stepped forward to the other side, bringing Tchernobog through each and every one of them as he went.

Blademaster [d10] + Tchernobog [d8] MULTI-ATTACK against all 8 enemies=21

Multi-attacked all the robots and overed with a +6 ( 4 from knack and style and 2 from Excellence), getting a 21. FYI OTHER DUDES IN THE FIGHT team up with this multi-attack so that we can just kill all the enemies this turn. So help out!

Remember I have a Deadly Weapon for counting wounds.

With a total of 56, the enemies will have to roll more than 40 to not die instantly :allears:

Wraithblade XP usage

Right, I think I'll just buy that one Power we talked about in IRC, Oriongates:

Slash Through Time: Via an application of his Balor powers, William can store a temporal echo of himself to be released later.

[Awakened, 1 EP Ongoing]: Wraithblade uses his action to perform an attack roll, which can later on be added to another attack roll when he stops paying the upkeep.

Unique power is 6 XP, leaving me at 7.

William sat still on the ground, legs crossed. To an outsider, he might have appeared stoic, almost meditative. But that was just the inexpressiveness so typical to the Neumann breed taking hold, for in truth he was extremely agitated. He did not mind the gowns, or his situation otherwise, except for one little detail. They had taken his sword. His SWORD. The ingrates. Only his respect for the Branch Chief was holding him from trying to tear his way out and find it.

So instead, he merely closed his eyes, and tried to concentrate inwards, get his mind off from this. He focused himself and on his immediate past, trying to cleave some clarity on the fate of his blade from the clutches of time itself.

And indeed, he saw some flickers.

Buying a signature move, leaving 7 XP in the bank: Slash Through Time - (Awakened, 1 EP ongoing) Via an application of his Balor powers, William can store a temporal echo of himself to be released later. Wraithblade uses his action to perform an attack roll which is 'stored', and can later on be added to another attack roll when he stops paying the upkeep.

Also, please give William his sword back before he loses his poo poo tia.

William's eyes did not sway from Tchernobog, which he had been busy inspecting for any possible blemish even since he had gotten it back. He addressed the room in his typical, flat tone.

"I can dispatch two by myself, if need be."
