I kinda wish I had done the same, that finale is loving weird for what was mostly a comedy. Anyone know if the manga goes past that and/or deals with Machi's broken brain somehow?

Looking through the raws, I can't find the events of the last episode? Also it's far more cute, less creepy, and paced better.

Hope it continues to be translated. The raws up to chapter 27 while we only have chapter 15.

the whole emphasis on the idol thing is anime original

Episodes 11 and 12 were 100% anime-original. Don't let them turn you off the manga.

If someone would just show the poor girl how to work those things before letting her have a go. Like that rice cooker in the anime. If a normal adult had shown her how to work it at the most basic, she probably wouldn't have failed so catastrophically.

Does the manga ever show what she does at school? Is there anyone at all even roughly her age there?

I'm angry about neglected anime girls.

No, but the social anxiety works better as a joke when it's Machi blushing for a panel instead of "7 second slow zoom on her face with sad music playing". She spends a lot more time having fun with the other characters too.

And generally she's too proud to ask how things work. She wants to be a cool modern girl.

The ending's not wholly 100% anime-original, but the bulk of the last arc was a blown-up sequence made real that was just a brief nightmare she was having in the manga. It still has the bits at the very end - and then a stinger after because the story's still to be continued after that.

anime is not good
i'm going to be honest, i guessed she was going to stay in the village from episode one, but i assumed they'd play up the reason as love and sense of community rather than psychotic delusions and fear

This anime was pretty mediocre but the ending theme was really good and the non-non-watamote thing it was doing was kind of interesting.

i'd actually argue watamote is less mean-spirited than this just for the fact that tomoko actually has people who care about her in some way, all the bad things that happen to her are because of her own personal flaws and insecurities but nobody ever makes any attempt to take advantage of those insecurities like people do constantly with machi in kumamiko

All is for the best, in this, the best of all possible worlds
Oh, come on, it's not that bad! Everybody got what they wanted and all conflicts were resolved! It even had Natsu and Machi wrestling around and giggling and having a great time! It's the happiest ending ever --

... yeah, no, that was pretty much Bad End: The Musical. It's too bad, too, because the show was kinda fun for a while there. If there's ever a second season (which seems pretty iffy at this point) I don't see how they couldn't have Machi wake up and the last two eps be a dream, no matter how cheap a copout that may be.

Still gonna put the ED song on loop and do all my chores to it, though.

I believe in Beato.
Even when she's driving.
At night.
In a snowstorm.
The last episode made me rethink the whole "social anxiety" thing. Previous episodes have shown that Machi can go into a trance state, and those around her presume those states are sent from the gods.

So what with Natsu straight out asking the mountain gods to keep Machi there in the villiage, combined with Machi being given a vision of being home in the mountains so that she can perform her idol act but then the vision changing to people throwing rocks at her , I think the mountain gods are simply determined to keep their miko there in the mountains with them.

That would explain why Machi goes way beyond 'social anxiety' into 'crazy panic land' whenever she leaves the village area for long. (possible exception being on the clothes shopping trip, where the gods of shopping apparently took her over for a while). The mountain gods are conditioning her to not want to leave anymore.

Still a bad end. The gods are cruel.

They adapted ~15 chapters while still leaving out some scenes. Give the manga a few months and there's a second season easy.

Reading ahead it looks like more funny side characters and less opportunities for the animators to break it. So yes.

They liked the other episodes well enough. It's probably too late for this to affect the OVA episodes that are coming with the Blu Rays, if that was ever an option.
