INTRO:
Welcome to a completely original idea!
Doom holds a very special place in my heart. Developed by a handful of dudes in Mesquite, Texas, and uploaded as shareware on December 10th, 1993, Doom was a multi-million dollar making masterpiece of a game. It revolutionized the First Person Shooting genre (which had actually been referred to as the Doom clone genre back in the day), and became, as ID software predicted, "The number one cause of decreased productivity in businesses around the world" for a couple of years. ID software's story is quite fascinating to me, and seeing as there is a new Doom game on the horizon, I think now is as good time to take a look back at ID's legacy.

WHO WE ARE:
I'm Temin_Dump. I've been playing doom ever since it first came out. (Yes, ever since I was a little baby.) Having played these games a million and a half times, I'd say I'm pretty qualified to go through with this journey. Joining me is my good friend, Redysseus, and internet friend Explosive Coffee Salesman (Albeit a bit less frequently than us two.). Both pretty big fans of the Doom games. My aim is to deliver as much informative commentary and background for these games as possible, while filling the rest of the time with dumb banter with my buddies. I am also open to having other guests on board as well, so if you want to join us, just shoot me a message, or you can contact me on Skype (Temin Dump).

FORMAT:
I plan on releasing videos on a weekly basis (with some hiatuses between games to build up a small backlog of recordings) The goal is to start with ID's first commercial FPS (Wolfenstein 3D), and work our way up to the new Doom game. I also plan on covering the many various ports of these games as bonus videos.

20 Years of Doom may sound like a misnomer, but believe me, there will be more Doom than anything else in this thread by the end of it. Since Doom is well known for its huge modding capabilities, we will also be looking at ~20 years of doom mods as well. The main source of these wads will be the Cacowards on Doomworld.com. I'm completely open to any suggestions for mods, so feel free to send some our way. I also want to take a look at some mods for other ID games, but I'm not quite as familiar with mods for games other than doom. Mod suggestions for Wolf 3D, the Quake series, and Doom 3 will also be greatly appreciated.

MULTIPLAYER:
I plan on streaming multiplayer for any of the games on the list that have that capability. We will have Co-op streams and Deathmatch streams. For coop, the idea is to see how quickly the three of us can blast through the games together. For deathmatch scenarios, I'd like to have some goons join me and my friends for some mindless fun.

THE GAME LIST
(Big thanks to Red for this image.)

(And also, like a million wads and other surprises. I'll update the full list here.)

NOTE TO SELF: UPDATE THIS!

Temin_Dump posted:

So, a few people have already chimed in with their guess to the final video count (And I'm happy to let them change their answers since I haven't posted this yet), but yeah, we're playing The Price is Right Rules here; the closest to the actual number without going over.

Anyone is free to guess both the final death tally, the final video count, and the death count for each "section" of the LP. I'll update one of the OP posts with this information.

What I'm looking for now is the death count for all of the 1994 wads. The deadline for this will be Friday, August 12 by 11:59 P.M. PST (Or you know, before I go to sleep that night).
This contest will be a thing that runs throughout the life of the thread. People will gain points for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

The final death count, and final video count deadlines will be Saturday, December 31st, by 11:59 P.M. PST Just throw a number out there. I don't even know what the final count could possibly be, and we're not even close to the end. I will allow you to change each of these guesses once, but just once.

So, that's 3 contests (That I have planned anyway) for the thread. I plan to have some form of prize, but that is far off and TBD. The final numbers are out of everyone's control, so this ought to be interesting.

Wolfenstein 3D is great though. It gets pretty samey as you go through it (especially if you include SoD) but it's a fun and challenging game.

That's my main problem with the game though! I certainly don't hate it, but it does get to be hard to come up with new material for it.

Also, on an unrelated note, is there a way to change the tag for my thread? I feel kinda dumb for that now.

Wolf3D was my first FPS when I found it on my Dads computer way back in ~'94 at the tender age of 8. He only had the Shareware episode though, so I didn't get to kill Hitler until a year later when I discovered that one of my friends not only had a copy too, but his Dad had shelled out the money for all the episodes; and thus did I become a software pirate at 9.

I don't remember exactly when we got Doom, but I know it was after the Doom 2 release (which I really wanted, back then you could buy a double-wide box that had the full versions of Doom I and II, but Mom really didn't like that we even had the Shareware version, so that was that). Our shareware copy came as a surprise in the bottom of the box for a Joystick my dad and I bought to enhance our Flight-Sim sessions (Knights of the Sky and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe), which we had previously been playing using keyboard controls (oh early 90's gaming, there are many things about you I do not miss). Doom was an upgrade over Wolf3D in every way, and I played the hell out of it. This was pre-internet for me (when didn't get internet access until I was in Junior High), so everything I found in the game, every level I beat, secret I found, was accomplished through trial and error.

One of my favorite gaming memories was testing out a theory that my Dad and I had, that there was more to the last level to be found after you enter the portal, since the room it drops you in is full of guys who kill you. We knew that the room would disable God Mode, but putting the code in would restore you to full health. So while my dad did his best to shoot all of the demons, I was on code duty, putting in IDDQD over and over again until all the enemies were dead... At which point we discovered that the room has a damage floor and there was nothing else to do except let yourself die. Oh well.

This is bizarrely similar to my childhood experiences with Doom. Minus Wolf 3D though. Weird.

PSWII60 posted:

I thought there were dudes in white behind that locked door on floor 10? What am I remembering?

I'm like 90% sure those guys don't appear until episode 3. It is a weird thing I noticed with old games, where it's really easy to misremember what things are in the game and not. I stopped playing Doom II for a couple years when I was a kid, and when I came back to it, I swear the pain elementals were a completely new thing that I had never seen before.

IIRC there was also a GBA port of Doom and rather unsurprisingly it was utter dogshit.

Ironically, the GBA ports of Doom/Doom 2 aren't the worst ports I've experienced.

Didn't see this mentioned, but way back, the shareware version of Wolf3D (at least the one I had), was an older engine than the one that made retail release. The most notable difference I found was that push-walls didn't slide, while they and all other doors kinda snapped to their open state.

I went and looked for a video of this, and was unable to find it. Do you have a link to a recording of this? I'm interested to see that.

I can't find anything either. Sorry :(

I remember it was a very limited demo. Maybe just the first episode. I stunk at the game way back, and I got stuck on floor six, so I'm not sure if Hans was even in it at floor 9. I was playing on a 286 and the splash screen looked different, more pixelated. EGA maybe...

e: A clue I just found at https://tcrf.net/Wolfenstein_3D_(DOS) says that "Salute" was cut music used for the splash theme in the prototype version of Wolf (whatever that means). THAT is the theme I remember hearing when the game started. I have no idea how on earth I had that version of the game!

Nice! That was enough info for me to find this: https://youtu.be/pqHpaB_nRH8
Cool stuff. Didn't know there was an alpha of this game floating around.

Yeah, when Coffee asked about that, for some reason I thought he was asking whether or not the weapons were digitized from real life. Oops!

This is basically right, but it also comes with new music, and the level design takes a huge step up from regular Wolfenstein 3d from what I recall. Most of the levels are more compact, so it's harder to get lost, there's a lot of new tiles and decorations to help alleviate the monotony, and it overall feels like a more polished game.

They changed the chaingun pickup sound (IIRC) though which is laaaame.

Eeehh... I kinda like the SOD chaingun pickup sound more.

I'm sad I didn't join this on the ground floor because I'm a German who played Wolf3D as a child (technically super-illegal) and would have enjoyed making fun of some of the stuff the enemies say (has anyone even commented on the iconic "mein Leben"?).

Still, this is the first anthology LP I've watched where I didn't have some problem with the style or quality of commentating, so good job on that. I really like the concept and hope there will be more series and genre overview threads with informative content about how things evolved over time.

Having said that, I think to be perfect the LP would need some sort of veteran who's a decade or so older than you guys at least, because it's kind of hard to explain the fascination of some of this stuff when you didn't play it when it was new. I've played Doom with another goon after suggesting to try out some old co-op stuff and we basically had the opposite problem: We had a blast, but it would have been even greater to have some young whippersnapper playing with us to whom we could explain why some of the stuff was so significant back then. Id in particular is a company who was always on the vanguard of gaming technology, at least back in the olden days, with almost every Quake or Doom engine seeming like a paradigm shift.

Anyway, good work, guys. Here's to a long-lasting mammoth of a thread.

Well there's more gratuitous poor German coming up in the expansion packs that we haven't commentated over yet. I'm open to having more people join us. Our oldest guy is Coffee, and I think that's only by like 4 years.
Also, thanks for the kind words!

If you're interested, you can contact me on Skype. (Temin Dump). We have a pretty rigid recording schedule though. We usually record Thursdays between 4:00 P.M. and 9:00 P.M. Pacific Time. Also, we're quite a few videos ahead of the update schedule, so it's best to keep that in mind if you're interested in a specific game/wad. I suppose I'll have to be a bit more transparent with the things we're recording now though.

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, I've been deleting the raw footage for my videos as they get uploaded, because they're freaking huge, so I won't be able to re-upload the videos that are already out with better sound balance. I will keep this in mind moving forward though. I was just telling Red how I don't exactly have an ear for audio editing, so it's really a learning experience for me. So here's something I'm interesting in contributing in

I've been looking for an excuse to start doing Doom maps, and this could also be part of a Doom Builder special for the LP.
It's the DUMP(No relation) -- the Doom Upstart Modding Project part 3. It's an invitation for new people to Doom mapping to contribute.
I'm not necessarily an upstart myself, but I am really amateur when it comes to making maps, so I think I'd like to participate.
I guess I'm also checking to see if anyone else in the thread would be interested in participating in this.

You know, somewhat related to that, when I got to the end of Episode 1 for Doom for the first time, that really scared me. Something about the sudden ambush followed by kind of creepy music in the aftermath. Although nowadays, I think the song that plays during that part is pretty cool.

That did seem to be the case with the Commander Keen games. Though for the 2 Softdisk games we just did, I'm pretty sure it worked through some kind of magazine subscription thing. If I remember correctly, Softdisk had a monthly software catalog, and the bimonthly gamer's edge catalog, and Hovertank and Catacomb were part of that. No idea how much the subscription cost though.
