Ebert championed a lot of great overlooked movies like The Fall, Dark City, and Herzog's Bad Lieutenant. fyodor posted:Clifford is so obviously great what the hell man. He didn't like that Kubrick vietnam movie none neither lol. 2 1/2 stars isn't bad.

Frankly he should have won an Oscar.

Filthy Hans posted:Siskel was fun, and he and Ebert were very competitive with each other, especially with trying to find out how the other was going to rate an upcoming movie. That way they could anticipate the other's arguments and opinions and undermine them to look smarter in the show. Siskel would apparently resort to clandestine measures to accomplish this, like hiding under a table to eavesdrop on Ebert. Some of these outtakes are pretty funny, especially the one that starts around 5:38. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkwVz_jK3gA

Roger Ebert is dead to me since he wrote that incredibly whiny and lame review to The Hitcher (which is a fantastic movie). No wait, Roger Ebert is dead to me since his hosed up jaw killed him lmao

My favorite was how when he shat on a film he went out of his way to lay out his displeasure.quote:"I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering, stupid, vacant, audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it." —From "North" review quote:This movie doesn't scrape the bottom of the barrel. This movie isn't the bottom of the barrel. This movie isn't below the bottom of the barrel. This movie doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence with barrels. —From "Freddy Got Fingered" review The best was his feud with Rob Schneider over a critic who left a bad review for Deuce Bigalo 2. Rob Schneider took out ads slamming the critic for never winning a Pulitzer. Ebert then included this in his review for the movie. quote:"Schneider is correct, and Patrick Goldstein has not yet won a Pulitzer Prize," Ebert said at the close of the review. "As chance would have it, I HAVE won the Pulitzer Prize, and so I am qualified. Speaking in my official capacity as a Pulitzer Prize winner, Mr. Schneider, your movie sucks."

Not to stray too far off topic but I loved the fact that Gene Siskel chose "Babe: Pig In the City " as his movie of the year in 1998. I loved that movie. By the way, if any of you are curious as to Siskel & Ebert's year by year favorites list, here you go. Siskel & Ebert's Favorites List.

Like Armageddon is on the criterion collection, has a lot of real objective film making merit to it even if he hated it... especially when stuff like Jason X and Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo, Nth sequels to franchises long dead are sharing the list. Is he saying that Friday the 13th pt 6 is better than Armageddon and Saving Silverman? Despite being awesome, I think sometimes he liked to be goony and do reviews just as a gently caress you to people.
