Preservers are just regular old mages like the ones in other DnD settings. They get called Preservers because other mages (Defilers) drain the life out of plants to fuel their magic. That said: Thri-kreen psionicist, human preserver, mul fighter, dwarf cleric.

I think Defilers gained levels faster and were able to cast more spells per day. Don't really remember the specifics tbh.
