wow ive seen some neato poo poo on the internet before, but this is something different this dude made a "fantasy console" using html5 and lua called the pico-8, and it has cartridges that are actually png files. http://pico-8.wikia.com/wiki/Pico8 posted:PICO-8 (or "Pico-8") is a fantasy console by Lexaloffle Games for making, sharing, and playing small computer games and programs. you can embed it in a web page but there is some paid version thats standalone, and it lets you program new games and poo poo from within the app. its some very yospos-y stuff going on with it, but theres some fun poo poo in it there even if you dont like tech and hanging out. examples: the good pills picross-8 hydra, a hack-and-slash game. its p loving impressive.

for people who don't get why you'd use pico 8 over something else with more features or whatever, its way easier and funner to make something under lots of constraints. for instance, pico 8 has 16 pre-selected colours. its a great palate, but it also means that you can't spend any time fiddling around with the colour schemes. and you're quite limited when it comes to symbols/loc so you can't spend your life making one super elaborate game that nobody ever plays, you actually feel like a thing is done and you can ship it. and a 128x128 screen means your art will only ever have so much fidelity, so you might as well ship it. the ceiling is only so high, so it doesn't scare people off that said there are people who are so good at pico 8 it disgusts me

Now what would be cool is if they made some sort of system where you could code a game into an actual picture file (like a QR code sort of) and then use like a QR reader to pick it up as a way of sharing games. That would most likely be impossible to make though (I don't think printers or cameras could have the fidelity/color definition required to reliably store and pick up the amount of data needed, but I might be wrong)
