im not sure what the past 15 years has shown you that makes you think the US military would be effective at all against widespread insurrection in the US
And a small group storming the capital building would be pretty effective too. And depending on what sparked said insurrection there's no guarantee the military sides with the gov in the first place. Worst case would be civil war type thing within the military.

As to the political issue: The [U.S. political] left has had complete confiscation as their goal for 50 years. Saying otherwise is bull poo poo. We can argue over how long they've wanted it, but not over the fact that incrementalism to confiscation is their exact goal.

And on the legal side lets see the left supporting (paid-fee) background checks and fingerprinting requirements for press credentials with a 10 day waiting period and a 1 interview per month limit, with specific limits on topic coverage and microphone size limits and going into a national database as constitutional.

And if you want a megaphone its a $200 fee plus an in depth background check and having to have your local law enforcement sign off that you aren't crazy and a 6-12 month wait and still not being able to cross state lines with it without another form going to the government and having to have your full name engraved on the megaphone with specific engraving requirements and having to carry your stamped paperwork proving you did all of the above and if you lose said stamped paperwork mere possession of said megaphone is a $10k and 10 year felony. And if it breaks you can't possess spare parts or in many cases get it repaired, you have to do the whole thing over again.

But requiring ID to vote is loving unconstitutional as poo poo.

<sorry for the rant>

Why yes, I'm bored and want to see an arguement. I'm stuck at work for the next 3 1/2 hours because "hurricane" isn't a good enough reason to close early.
I'd *almost* like to see a minimum weapons safety/familiarization course, and gun ownership requirement for everybody. Explicitly legal under the "well regulated militia" clause the left likes to quote, and with a $1000 non-compliance tax fee penalty [whatever will make it legal] shoved up their rear end too just because. Its a bad idea for a whole host of reasons, but seeing the anti's try to turn around their own arguments would be amusing.

Pham Nuwen posted:

That's probably not going to get a ton of argument from SA gun owners. Besides, it worked for the Black Panthers, up until Reagan enacted some ridiculously strict gun control in California specifically because of them: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/09/the-secret-history-of-guns/308608/
There is a real argument to the saying that the only difference between a slave and a free man is the right to own weapons. Minority communities should be huge gun rights proponents (we saw a glimmer of this after the Orlando shooting). But overwhelmingly they're not, primarily due to the effects of drugs and the drug war. Pity.

Obama didn't manage to do anything because they millions of Americans are single issue voters and the last time they passed an assault weapons bans they lost congress for many years as the public backlash. And even mentioning it is a big part of what caused them to lose congress again.

Then you disagree with the US political left aligned party, but its still true.

Its not a slippery slope, I'll give you that. Policy A doesn't lead to B lead to C leads to confiscation. But the left only pushes policy C because they can't get C or B or confiscation. Its incrementalism.

3 months in this apartment. They're finally coming out to fix my kitchen sink (which leaks from the knob and won't turn completely off) and replace my dishwasher tomorrow. Supposedly.

Took a few very bitchy phone calls over a couple of weeks to their corporate office and a visit from the city building inspector today. Apparently that combination got the regional president's attention (called me) , along with their "director of brand marketing" (emailed me) and an apologetic yet bitchy voicemail from the on-site management. My lease actually states they can evict me for calling the city for "unfounded" issues, but the inspector told me that I'm far from the only person bitching about this place.

I'm paying almost $300/mo more than my last apartment - it's a bit more space (750 sq ft vs 600), but it's older than my last apartment, doesn't include a washer/dryer like my last one (but does have connections), the building has structural issues, and they don't maintain the property for poo poo. Never made a living at it, but I've always kept a decent camera around. Phone cameras have gotten good enough that it's rare for me to drag my DSLR out. It used to go everywhere with me; my only gripe about a phone camera for quick snapshots is phones take a couple of seconds to get ready to take a photo, then a bit to focus... while a DSLR is pretty much ready to go the moment you pick it up. Might take half a second to focus, but even my relatively old D5100 goes from power off to shutter clicking in less than a second, assuming it's bright enough for it to focus on its own. The autofocus assist light burned out years ago, so AF on it is useless in low light.

Not working tomorrow, I may drag the DSLR out to the lake. Might find some trails. Who knows. I just wanna get the gently caress out of the house and get outside and maybe take a few pics with something with a decent lens. The weather should be nice, low 90s.
The issue with phone cameras isn't so much quality, but versatility. No zoom (and the lenses are so damned wide), still pretty noisy in any low light conditions, etc.

Zoom lenses also let you get various lens perspectives: compressing background, emphasizing depth, or getting great bokeh. Can't do that with a fixed lens.
