Xmas Pterodactyl posted:Brown did initially launch a Keynesian style response while in power, but then ran the election campaign on cutting spending (just not as far as the Tories). His Quantitative Easing programme, which continued under the Tories, was also disproportionately focused on benefiting the wealthy in the financial sector, in the false neoliberal belief that this would trickle down into the rest of the economy. By failing to defend his Keynesian response in the 2010 election, he ceded the argument about austerity to the Tories and set the groundwork for Miliband/Balls for the next 5 years. Good post.

Wow, that's a game changer. I guess that explains why there was bugger all on the BBC website about it. Still, when will the far right of the Labour Party stop trying to split the party? Their disloyalty knows no bounds etc

Pissflaps posted:The MPs are going to take the blame for the next Labour election defeat regardless of what they do - though I agree there's no point in splits or further leadership challenges (I didn't want to see the last one either). If an overwhelming majority of Labour MPs learn to just wheesht in public and pretend to accept that the party can't win until the incessant squabbling stops and Labour still lose the next election then I will be content with Jeremy stepping down. The 1st year being a disaster doesn't preclude a Labour win in 2020. So obviously I think with a reasonably united Labour Party who didn't win would be within reason to jettison their leader. Which doesn't mean I'd not then campaign for another member of the Labour left to replace Jeremy. I'm a socialist and I think socialist ideas give us the best remedies for curing society's maladies.

Plucky Brit posted:So why is he okay with the money being spent on a system which he will never use? It's actually because the party agreed at conference last year to replacing the nuclear deterrent. I won't disagree that it's bad politics to outright say he'll never use them when it hardly needed to be stated, but on the whole it's a wise compromise to make, even if I agree with Jeremy that it's both an abhorrent weapon that can never be used & an obscene waste of money. But if it's the price to pay to keep Labour united and in a position to win the next election then so be it.

OwlFancier posted:Why are speech revisions something the press is privy to? Press generally get shown advance copies of speeches so they can publish the story as soon as the speech happens. Especially in this day and age. Anyway, whoever was saying Milne should be replaced with someone competent is on to something. Except for the obvious question. "Who has the experience and attributes for the role while also being close enough to Jeremy's politics?

Ignoring current affairs because I'm mostly without Internet at the moment except when I dive into a pub with free wifi, 6 Music is the only radio I listen to. Except it's a bit wank during the day because you end up hearing the same song 4 times a day 5 days a week. I want to burst my eardrums next time I hear Tangerine by Teleman, & I started off finding it inoffensive. But Mark Riley and Iggy Pop in the evenings are good, and if I wake up early enough Chris Hawkins is good. The morning DJ Shaun Keavney needs to talk less and play music a lot more though because he's about as funny as Moyles.

Not looking at any news except the Morning Star and checking ukmt twice a day has been good. Aside from a basic impression that Labour's right seem to be going full anti immigration (except for the hyper-wealthy I'm sure) and Allardyce getting punted for being dodgy I'm out of the loop and feel none the worse for it. Apparently while I've been away there's been acts of civil disobedience in my home village. A sewage plant is being made massively bigger because the Earl of Cawdor has decided to build thousands of new homes. And for the first time in the 26 years since 1st moving there the locals aren't taking it. They stopped all traffic getting in, not heard how long for. I'm quietly proud of them and gutted I missed it

OwlFancier posted:I'm not sure it's super good to applaud NIMBYs for opposing important infrastructure works to support homes for people. There's definitely an element of NIMBYism, goes without saying. But it's also a fairly poor village getting stuck with the literal shite from a massive estate being built by a grossly wealthy landowner. Because us plebs usually just stand by and take our rimming from our betters. And people are getting zip in exchange. If the oval office would partially pay for the dualling of the A96 between Nairn and Inverness or something to help deal with a planned 5,000 homes to be built over 30 years, that'd be something at least. So it's NIMBYism but with more than a touch of class war, even of the most minor kind.

Just reading the news while sat in the pub like you do when you need free Wifi, hadn't realised quite how much Tom Watson had fallen out with Len McClusky. For a bloke elected on the backs of the unions that seems bad. So which female pro-Corbyn MP should the left challenge Watson over the Deputy Leader if he decides to continue pretending that party unity is a one way street? Oh and good to see McTernan's continuing to be awful. Agreed with Pissflaps earlier so was worried the world was broken forkboy84 fucked around with this message at 19:05 on Sep 28, 2016 |
