It basically goes like this, there's Adventure Quest, Dragon Fable and Mech Quest. Each with increasing levels of technological sophistication and knowledge. Adventure Quest is bog-standard fantasy, Dragon Quest is a couple of decades later and ends up being somewhat steampunk from memory with a more advanced world. Mech Quest is as the name suggests a bunch of giant robots fighting. There's a few other games here and there but those were the three big ones.

Here's the real kicker, the sci-fi mech game is the earliest in the timeline. Dragon Fable even has a location where you visit the husk of one of those robots.

I... I don't even, Adventurequest. Premise at least sounds neat, but how's the execution? I only ever played the original AQ

Hate to break it to you, but ancient civilizations that are way more advanced than the present setting is a time-honoured videogame trope, especially in JRPGs.

Hell, Warframe does it. (Which is a really good MMO... type thing, but not a formal request.)

Oh I know that it's a common trope, it's the execution that's really out there not the actual fact. As the mech in Dragon Fable shouldn't exist. The general idea is that the universe reset somewhere between Mechquest and Adventure Quest, and the fact that a mech survived is impossible but probably related to Warlic, a Wizard who is probably the most knowledgeable about all the time nonsense. Though having looked further Dragon Fable is actually a prequel to Adventure Quest, and then Mechquest is a prequel to that.

The timeline might also be cyclical, in that it resets and slowly reaches MechQuest time period again before resetting.

Das Panzer posted:

Mechquest combat plays basically like Adventure Quest but with the ability to actually walk around, although my memories of AQ are hazy at best. Dragon Fable is even more open, where you exist in a game world and actually walk around fighting things from memory. There's also two sequels to Adventure Quest that take place in different timelines. A sci-fi one which plays basically the same, and another fantasy game that is fully mobile and has real time combat instead of turn-based like all the others.

Any of these games are probably worth a look at, because Artix Entertainment at least are very hard-working as far as I can tell.

Yeah, if STO simply cut any and all ground content outright it'd be a vastly better game. There's precisely one good ground anything in the entire game and even that's only because it has cyborg dinosaurs.

The game was a lot better than we were expecting, and we'll likely go back to it a couple of times because we were having fun. But I'll agree that it wasn't a good idea to try and mix 3rd person cover shooter mechanics with Tab-targetting cooldown-rotation mechanics. We didn't show the tutorial, but I thought the ship fighting parts were pretty fun even though I'm terrible at them.

STO is the only MMO where the grinding (space grinding, to be accurate) is actually fun. No joke; I loved doing the space battles again and again as an Escort/Tactical captain simply because I was so fragile but I did so much damage. Against tough AI cruisers or other players, things got really intense.

Yeah, we'll do anything that's requested, but we won't go out of our way to play a game if people aren't interested in seeing it. If someone makes a request for MapleStory we'll certainly give it a try, otherwise I'm sure the rest of the internet has us covered, heh.

You should try Wonderland online, which has such bizarre elements as romance-game style unlock able CG of key NPCs and game balance so grindy that they actually put an in-game bot mechanic so the game can grind for you while you sleep.

Also Otherland because that's my favorite sci-do novel series and I want to see what you think of its mangled corpse.

F2P MMOs were really my first taste of MMOs, and without doing my internet research, I assumed they were all terrible and not a genre for me. It wasn't until a few years ago really that I discovered there are some good ones out there, most of which aren't F2P, but it was more of a 1-in-every-10 deal.

I had a friend in high school that despite me trying to tell her otherwise, she was convinced that the only MMOs around were Aeria Games stuff and that they were all fantastic. She knew WoW existed, but dubbed it as some ridiculous rich person's game, instead telling me how I should ditch it for some fine Aeria Games offerings.

IIRC STO was originally had a full retail release and then went FTP when it was sold off to one of the huge Chinese MMO companies which explains the higher than average level of production quality.

I don't think there is actually a cover mechanic in the game, crouching just gives you a defense bonus against range.

Has Ragnarok Online gone F2P yet? That poo poo was so popular with my friends in the early 2000's for high school. All those private servers too where the hosts and admin would play god of their own little community because you felt like leveling up 10 times faster than normal and didn't want to grind for loot. Good times.

I'd love to see RO as an episode to see how its aged.

Edit, actual feedback on LP content post first 2 episodes:

I understand that you have stated in the OP that you want "Commentary [to be] casual and 'podcast-y'" but I feel like I have to say most good podcasts on subjects are actually fairly structured. I don't know if I am expecting something different to what you aim to deliver; but after the two episodes on Aura Kingdom I don't know anything about the game after 45mins beyond it's called Aura Kingdom, is an Asian MMO and looks like "white wash" anime world.

There was no mention of details like the dev/publisher or when the game was released that I've come to expect in most LP's. The combat system was noted to be weird but you didn't touch upon anything about the actual mechanics of the game or explain anything about character creation, classes, abilities, leveling up or anything that the game is really about.

Coming away I feel like I watched 45min of two people have a weird chat full of in-jokes that I don't get with the conversation occasional pulling back to "Oh hey we are playing this game. I just did a double jump!" As such I would suggest that a more structured stance to the commentary would help in making this LP a LP; and not two people talking over footage of bad MMOs.

As for MOBAs, we're avoiding them as they provide no real way to mess around and interact with each other. They also require a lot more concentration than anything else.

Woah, you're right, it turns out we were arguing for nothing!
Joking aside, you're completely right! We were expecting something other than COD, we were at least expecting a TF2 / Overwatch like game, it was so disappointing! Even without having seen anything Ghost in the Shell related, I know it's an interesting enough property that so many things could've been done with it!

We're doing all the requests in the order they were requested, so you can expect to see (Roughly in this order): Scarlet Blade, Tibia, Champions Online, Shaiya, Dungeon Fighter Online, Phantasy Star Online 2, Pirate 101, Toontown, War Rock, Combat Arms, Vindictus, Urban Rivals, /then/ the Esperanto One. Keep in mind we've already recorded a good chunk of these, it's just a matter of releasing the videos every couple of days. :)

This is genuinely some good feedback. We both do want to do our best to please everyone, but it may be that what we're doing is quite what you're looking for. We try to avoid any in-jokes that we feel others wouldn't get, so I'll be sure to improve on that. In fact, I'll do my best to take into account everything you said in future recordings. I guess if we were to compare what we were aiming for with something from the forums, it'd be the "20 Years of Sonic / 30 Years of Mario" guys or the two doing the entire Final Fantasy library. I have no idea if we succeed at being like those groups, but that's what we were aiming for.
I've been avoiding recording character creation and the tutorial because I tend to actually concentrate on the game during those and felt it wouldn't make good watching material if it was us tweaking characters and learning controls for half an hour.
But you're right, we really should talk more about the mechanics themselves, and I think we'll improve on that in coming recordings. There's still several videos that have already been recorded that will be coming out, but I do want to do everything I can to improve our work. Thank you for being honest, and that applies to everyone in the thread who's given feedback so far. :)

I second both of these options. I like the banter, reminds me of a Game Grumps kind of feel so I don't mind it, but I also want to know more about the games and what actually makes them broken or whatever. I think it'd be cool to do that in posts, either by you folks or bring in someone who can speak to the faults of each game and have them make an info-dump post about some of the 'worst of' for that game.
