Sounds like some odd gameplay mechanics decisions, but this is the E.Y.E. guys we're talking about. I recently replayed that and still had a lot of fun (focused on shooting), and played through Dawn of War II: Retribution (good stuff) and Space Marine (not so good) so I'm doubly interested in this. The only enemy types we'll be seeing are Genestealer variants? No other Tyranids? Kind of a bummer if that's true.

They've only talked about Tyranids and Genestealers.

But I expect a "twist" with an Ork and Chaos Space Marine or two showing up.

Gameplay note: Play with friendly fire off unless you want your apothecary(medic) to die when it walks into the barrels of teammate guns.

Related to this is your bullets come from your guns and since you don't have that many movement options positioning you body is important. The chaingun thing is some kind of hit scan to because you can bug it out and have its ammo decrease without firing bullets trying to keep it spun up.

Overall the beta is fun. Connectivity issues is the reason why I haven't be able to finish the chapter they have in the beta.

Odd tyranid/graphics behavior occurs in swarms. Unless frame loss/ jumpiness is supposed to simulate the chaos of battle.

Beta is fun and good. Game is expected to be fun and good.

Solo will be fun when they have bots. (they have bots but not in beta)

My take:

Game is good and fun. If I were to judge the game on its current merits, looking solely at the gameplay, my gripe is that it's potentially very repetitive in a way that even Vermintide or L4D are not (and I'm not just talking about the single map). There doesn't seem to be any randomization in terms of objectives that I can tell, and since there aren't a lot of things to interact with, there's no random loot to grab or anything like that. The enemies are mostly some variation of "guy shoots at you" or "guy gets up in your face" and the prominence of the latter means you often don't really appreciate the variety of enemies coming at you, making it feel a little samey. That being said I still had a lot of fun with it so far.

Optimization is atrocious and the loading times are a little inexcusable for a game of this size. I expect that to change. What I'm trying not to bet the farm on is that they'll add more classes, abilities or weapons later. A lot of people banked on that with Vermintide and that game is only just starting to see some new content.

I'd say keep an eye on it. If you can afford it and you want to check it out it's worth a look but Beta feels very Beta. This is not a nearly finished product, it's a feature complete product with lots of bugs to sort out. That isn't an expression of surprise or anger, but just warning folks who think they're basically getting the finished game - you aren't.

Whatever you do, don't open the inventory screen while on the map. You'll end up with both screens overlaying the game, and be unable to do anything.

Also occasionally you'll find yourself unable to fire/swing weapons after dying and respawning, possibly due to being killed while interacting with something. On the two occasions we ran into it we fixed it by using a door panel.

Also-also protect your Apothecary, as getting both your arms crippled in the midst of a swarm is no fun at all.

This game is actually awesome when it works..I think I've made it through 3/4 of the map at the most before crashing. Seems like every server I join or host ends up with a CTD at some point in the level.

Played through the level as everything but the Librarian and I have to say I'm loving the tactical specialist, or whatever the rightmost guy is. Once you hit max level you can turn on your never jam guns ability and dump your entire plasma cannon down a hallway every ten seconds. The ability actually cools down faster than the reload on that thing. Melee guy is fun too, you get the dragon ability from EYE and self invincibility and just teleport behind the xenos and go pssh... nothing personnel kid as you cut them down with your thunder hammer.

The other day I died in game and got the countdown HUD, but came back to life suddenly but the HUD didn't go away. The countdown ended up going negative and when I died it didn't reset so I couldn't respawn. I think someone revived me after a while and the HUD went away.

When I was trying to find a game, none of the buttons did anything. Server refresh did nothing, find match did nothing, host match did nothing. As I was loving around with it, a loading screen suddenly came up and put me in a lobby by myself so I assumed that I was playing a solo game. I was put in game with what I assumed were bots. They had names like "ChoppaBoy" and I was impressed they took the time to put in realistic dumb internet names for your co-op bots. Then someone started complaining via chat about someone else not healing so I guess they were real people??? Either that or their pubbie AI is more advanced than I thought.

This is a buggy rear end game.

Game is good and fun. Graphics aren't amazing but the atmosphere is very nice. The room and halls are geiger-esque enough for me. Classes seem unbalanced with some of them being fun from the getgo, others needing plenty of levels. The melee class is slow as hell but hard-hitting. Too slow.

You should get this game but, as others have said, it's not ready for full release and I think December 9th is very optimistic.

Also, how do you chat in game? I couldn't get my chat box open. I lost all controls and trying to mime that to people ingame was impossible without jump.

What I've played of the demo is fun, though I've been getting a really bad issue where performance spikes and takes up 100% of my processor power and the game freezes for 5-10 seconds. This is regardless of graphics quality. It appears to be AI related.

I posted this on their tech support forum and their QA teams kmow of the issue and acknowledged as much. I just hope they get it ironed out before December 9th, since no joke, this is the game I've been most excited about this year.

I've been looking at this for a while but I'm really trying to avoid getting burned by pre-orders so I haven't bought it yet. How does it compare to Vermintide? I know it's more focused on ranged than melee combat, but is there some depth to the ranged combat? (Vermintide has a deeper/weirder/more confusing melee system than is apparent at first glance). Also, what's the atmosphere like? The promo videos seem rather relentlessly and humourlessly grimdark. I know that's 40k's shtick and that WHFB has always had more humour in the setting, but I I worry it would get a bit wearing eventually.

It is very industrial in appearance. They have a lot of nice environmental story telling if you look. You see dead bodies in places with Las guns next to them. Around the engine room are dead mechanicus slumped on stairs.

One thing it is missing is banter between the characters. That wad one thing vermin tide did well, and even Space Marine. Space Marine did a good job with the banter between marines from the same chapter, which is missing here in multiplayer. Even things like shouting challenges to the xenos or prayers to the emperor can help.

The gun play is good and solid. The melee is mostly for "oh poo poo I have to reload " moments. My biggest complaint, at least in the demo map is there are a lot of corridors, and it is near impossible to shoot past a fellow terminator, meaning whomever is in front is doing the killing while those behind twiddle their thumbs, heal the guy in the lead, or maybe watch the back.

But once you get to those open areas with an assault cannon and three storm bolters going, boy is it fun.

Like I said, they could take a queue from Space Marine and have marines with different personalities. Though the one problem is that you can have more than one of each class of marine.

Just hearing something, like even yelling "for the Lion!" Or audio queues like, "I hear a broodlord" would be better than clomping around in silence.

I'm talking strictly multiplayer. I saw their 17 minutes of campaign footage and they need to tone it down there.

Actually, that looked like another big difference with both Vermintide and Left 4 Dead - player movement seems very slow. Again that's totally appropriate given the setting and that your mans are plodding about in huge suits of Terminator armour, but does it work from a gameplay point of view? I could see slow movement being pretty frustrating in an FPS.

I liked the slow movement and tight corridors.

It felt different from other co-op shooters. In games like L4D you could ignore the environment (other than instagib areas). Things were more open and any closed in space was rare and small.

With Deathwing you felt pressured in the tight spaces. You want to get around and open fire but you can't. It creates a better atmosphere.

It also rewards aggressive play. Having an Assault charge into the horde opens up everyone else's firing lines. Playing it safe ends up with everyone getting swarmed and half the people unable to shoot.

That's exactly how the board game works. Only one person can ever shoot down a hall or you kill your team. And if you sit still the blips build up and eventually you get overrun.

The melee doesn't feel anywhere near satisfying as vermintide, and it's a real simple press 'Q' to melee and nothing more except a block button. The guns feel but save the default auto cannon which recoils all over the place. Regular bolters are good, plasma cannons are better.

The map from the beta was cool. Multiple routes to objectives, a healthy mix of corridor and open area. Nice details scattered around.

The two issues that can cripple the games fun is connectivity problems and static spawns. I played 12 hours of the beta and only finished the map twice. Every other try ended prematurely in losing connection to the host. Which I'm sure they're working on but for me at least it is a big deal.
The second kill joy was static enemy spawns. The one exception being broodlords that attract lesser tyranids indefinitely unless killed. But even the broodlords had fixed spawn points. The devs talked about an intelligent ai that horded troops and waited for the perfect moment to strike. All I saw was groups of three to five hybrids rush rush you with stubbers or genestealers running at you down a hallway instead of waiting for you to get closer. Maybe this was just part of the small beta, but a L4D vermintide game with static maps and static ai isn't a super selling point to me.

If they fix all the disconnect issues then the game will be worth picking up if you have a few friends or goons to play with.

Been watching some streamers playing and the amount of gibs is hilarious.

Melee seems kind of weak though. Reminds me a lot of Borderlands 1 melee, being almost an afterthought. The only weapon that looked like it had any crunch to it was the powerfist. I also think they need to overhaul the sound design or give some more weight to the Terminators' movements. That was one thing Relic's Space Marine game did really well, giving the player character a lot of mass and weight. If they took the model of power armour from Fallout 4 and adapted it to Space Hulk, it would feel a lot better.

The melee class is the only one that's good at melee and it's super good at it, it gets to teleport around and turn invincible at will. Other than that you're not supposed to be in melee at all, it's near instant death to be in melee in the board game and should only be used as a last resort.

Ditto, the comparison to L4D and the like was inevitable, but earlier someone likened it to a less interesting Republic Commando. ( Seriously, why has that game not had a sequel or something already? ) I wouldn't be even remotely surprised if this and Vermintide were kicked out into development at the same time to try and hit fans of both the Fantasy / 40k sides of things.

Their footage did them no favors either. I was expecting it to be some streamer's beta gameplay or whatever, but sticking the 'official gameplay' tag on something that janky is just :siren: territory. It doesn't inspire confidence that someone looked at that footage, said, 'Yep, this will make people want to buy our game.' and hit the big UPLOAD TO YOUTUBE button.
