Something weird is happening where the East isn't the West's open sewer this year. At least... for now it isn't. I've heard several talking heads say that it has to do with how Eastern teams are riding the wave of change towards faster teams. Honestly, it probably has more to do with the fact that more of the garbage teams in the league came from the east and those teams now have decent young teams that are able to make a good account for themselves whereas the better Western teams are older and slowing down.

Pornographic Memory posted:justin schultz's hot streak is certainly something else, he has more points in december than any skater besides crosby and malkin (well, almost - panarin is tied with him). it's really fun to watch and i've been rooting for the guy since he was traded to pittsburgh, but i'm kind of expecting it to all come crashing down for him at any moment. even if the rest of the penguins' defense is dead he's still probably in a better situation than he ever was in edmonton though, given the coaches and forwards around him. Petry is similar in that he's having a breakout considering he missed a bunch of games, and it's probably got to do with not playing on a team that could charitably be described as "garbage can set on fire".
