I think McDavid is really good, you guys.

crosby's rookie year penguins were legitimately bad and the oilers are historic underachievers. and listing gretzky's first 70 nhl games is more disingenuous than panarin's calder. i think the only thing you can take away here is that crosby is good

duclair scratched and perlini brought up.

duke's been snakebit but shows a lot more effort getting back on defense. probably a good idea to let him take a day off. perlini has 11 goals in 16 games in the ahl and had some setbacks with a broken hand and something else but he's probably right on track with a callup this year

dubnyk was a 3rd round pick and he had a .916 through 19 games. paying anything more than that would be one of those chicago level favors

Do UFA or RFA players count for Expansion Draft eligibility?

For example, Sam Gagner (UFA) or Alexander Wennberg (RFA) with no contract in place for 17-18 (assuming they don't re-sign them sooner)? It feels like it'd be doing nothing more for Vegas Golden KnightsTM other than a trade for the rights to a player who might walk anyway (in the case of a UFA).

e- :laffo:

If he had DDTed him right there on the ice and red carpet, I'd have bought a John Scott All-Star Jersey and Shirzee.

There's a negotiation period right before the expansion draft where vegas can talk to any RFA/UFA and if they are signed then that counts as their pick. I'd assume that any player picked in the expansion draft either has years left or has agreed to a deal.

Why does any GM talk up 4th liners? They're inherently replaceable, and whenever a team goes on about how great their 4th line is it just reeks of desperately trying to convince people your team has depth. Then, having gone on at length about how valuable these dumb players are teams are forced to pay them like a top 9 guy to make it seem like they are. This leaves you with Dorsett making $2.65M, Prust making $2.5M, Clutterbuck making $3.5M, and Bickell making $4M. Almost without fail these guys are waived and buried in the minors before their contract is done.

How hard is to say "our 4th line is contributing well" instead of resorting to bug-eyed histrionics about how they're game changers that are integral to teaching their youngsters how to play the right way? A slight measure of reservation in speech would probably save teams several million dollars per contract. It's not like GMs tend to rave endlessly about their star players or anything either, it's seemingly reserved entirely for veteran 4th line leader types. Almost like they feel the need to preemptively justify the terrible contract they're about to sign them to.

It's such a weird phenomenon that I've never understood in the slightest.

You can teach your star players how to backcheck and block shots but you can't teach your 4th line players how to actually play hockey, so maybe your stars learn that they should do what the grinders do.

Also GMs have way more flexibility signing 4th line players so it's more of their baby than any superstar foisted on them and there's a huge pool of bad hockey players so it's possible to sign someone who says and does exactly what you want.

peter holland to the yotes for a conditional pick. who?

Call Your Grandma posted:

Holland is pretty much the definitive mediocre depth player (and I mean this as a good thing). He doesn't do anything particularly well but he isn't really bad at anything either. Was a decent 3rd line centre on some awful Leafs teams until this year when the rookies pushed him out of the top 9 and Babcock decided he preferred Ben Smith's bad hockey skills but good faceoffs and penalty killing over Peter Holland. He's never going to be a core part of any NHL team but he is a legitimate NHLer.

good to hear, that's basically exactly what the yotes have wanted since brad richardson went out.

hifi

hifi
Jul 25, 2012

holland trade is for a 2018 6th, conditional on him being re-signed or traded.

that feels like a really good trade. if he's just a stopgap then it costs us nothing, and if he's just a stopgap but he does well then we trade him for something higher than a 6th
