Liberalism is associated with left-wing politics because liberalism was left-wing in the 18th and 19th centuries when the liberal bourgeoisie was advancing the progress of human civilization through its bourgeois-democratic revolutions. Liberalism is not left-wing today because liberalism is The Regime/The Status Quo and the revolutionary potential of the bourgeoisie as a class has been completely exhausted.

Leftism is ultimately about protecting the less fortunate from the more fortunate, which liberalism accomplishes through human rights, but it doesn't cover every channel of oppression so that's why we need leftism too to create the most just, free, and compassionate world possible, imo.

Mostly just true in the USA I think, where genuine left wing forces are subject to brutal state repression at every turn. That leaves liberals in the unhappy position of having to salvage society from the reactionaries by unfaithfully adopting some left wing ideas every once in a while (usually to abandon them later).

back in the day there were liberals and tories, and some of those liberals were kind of proto-socialistic (anti child labour, pro suffrage, etc). then labour parties emerged out of the labour movement, and liberal parties either shrank/disappeared, merged with the tories, or stayed strong but got a lot more centrist. in america, labour parties were crushed which (combined with an entrenched two-party system) meant liberalism was as good as it got. then all the labour parties moderated after the neoliberal revolution anyway, so they suck now too.

the obama era gave establishment liberalism a chance to eat itself to death in a way it could never have managed during clinton. the whole facade just came crashing down in a wave of solid, invincible impunity that was a direct continuation of bush ii. resistance was redirected into hyper-escapism with shocking ease before the first term was even up. the last ~5 years have seen right-wing forces slowly begin to usurp the "cultural underdog" role that used to be played by edgelord lefty types in the 80s-90s and that should scare the poo poo out of you. it is going to get so much worse, worse than you could possibly imagine right now
