Nadiya, Torch of Righteousness, War Practical Sorceress

Standing behind her King and beside her new peers, Nadiya felt her cheeks flushing and her mouth cracking a nervous smile. A furtive glance her reflection in Vario's polished armor gave her comfort: through her glamour she only presented a stoic glare befitting her new station. She hastily rehearsed her speech one last time before stepping forward.

"We have all heard tales of heroes slaying monsters and bringing glory to the King, but for all our lives we have only known fear. Today marks our return to glory, to a new age of heroism. Today we..." Her voice cracked. "LET'S gently caress THEM UP! YEAAAAH!"

It wasn't as eloquent as it had sounded in her head, but her soldiers seemed enthusiastic enough.

Vario Alagrigia, The Steel Heron

Vario looked at the soldiers under his command, and he cleared his voice. All eyes fell on him, ready to listen to his words.
"The beasts had us locked in Castle Impervious for ten long years, while they feasted on lands that are rightfully ours. Now we strike back, and we will cleanse the land from their filth! For the One True King! For God! Per l'airone!"
It felt good to yell his ancestral warcry. It would feel even better, once he had plunged his sword in an abomination's gut.

"Little by little the old world crumbled, and not once did the king imagine that some of the pieces might fall on him"

Hector of the Convoy

Hector felt a bit ill at ease in the chainmail he was wearing. He'd gotten some formal training as part of his elevation, along with the practical lessons of the convoy, but he was not a soldier. Then again, neither were many of the young men and women in front of him. He called out.

"Years ago, these creatures drove us from our homes, from our farms our villages, from the place where our families rested. Today, God willing, today starts the day when we take it all back. Today, we drive these creatures away from what is ours! People of Wells, we are going back home! We have a lot of work to do, so let's get to it!"

High Aspects: Farmer Lord
Hector never forgets where he's from, and much of what he knows, who he knows and how he acts are still based on that. It means he's well loved among the smallfolk , but has trouble dealing with people used to more refined treatment.

Trouble: Always Do the Right Thing
Hector's parents raised him with those values. Be honest, be charitable, be kind. In politics, that does not always fly.

Aspects:

Faithful man: Hector is deeply religious, and his relation with the clergy is generally good, even if it does mean he is easily influenced by them.

Logistics Prodigy: Whenever something has to get done, Hector is always the one to think about what people will eat, where will they sleep, how will they get moved. A talented discovered during the Convoy and honed over the years.

Untiring: He's a hard worker, and not one to let a work he started on get away from him. Diligent and persistent at his best, stubborn and overwhelming himself at worst.

Stunt

Reclaim What Was Ours: When Hector builds a farm, he automatically gets to add an extra farm.

Common tongue, Golden Heart: When losing his cool would mean doing an unfair, unkind or selfish thing, Hector rolls with Honor instead of Courtly Manners.

...We danced the Mamushka while Nero fiddled, we danced the Mamushka at Waterloo. We danced the Mamushka for Jack the Ripper, and now, Fester Addams, this Mamushka is for you....
High Adjudicator Annabelle Tjarn

"Crusaders."

Annabelle stood on a podium, in her uniform with an additional battle vestment. Her face was as stone, her pose authoritative. Her tone was weighty and even, but filled with inexorable purpose and determination.

"It has finally come to pass, that our One True King -forever may his name be exalted- has decided to wage war upon the vile hellspawn that inhabit the stolen land outside the mighty walls of Castle Impervious. Indeed, today is the day we strike back against this scourge, and in the name of our God above start the process of purging our rightful home of their deplorable presence."

Annabele closed her eyes for a moment, and allowed a heaviness to hang in the air.

"...But forget not, that a process it shall be. This is no easy march to victory. This is no quick raid for fast riches. No. This will be an ordeal. A tribulation. Have no doubt that our quest will take years. Have no doubt that many will have to give their lives. But also have no doubt in your hearts, that what we do is necessary for the good of mankind. And have no doubt that we will, inexorably and inevitably, succeed in the end, for righteousness will never bow down to evil."

"And thus I bid you once more, my Crusaders, to march forth! March forth in the name of our One True King, and our God Above, under whose guidance we shall drive this MALIGNANCY before us! March forth in the name of His Majesty's Law and God's Word, in the name of the ORDER we shall bring back to these lands! March forth, for the good of all mankind!"

Annabelle posted:

Courtly Manners: 2
Faith: 2
Honor: 1
Ladyship: 3
Magic: 1
Warfare: 0

High Concept: High Adjudicator
Annabelle is an authority figure of the establishment first, a noble only second (indeed, her nole title was a reward, instead of an inheritance). Whilst she has a manner suitable for dealing with other nobles, she is much more interested in her civil work, that of organizing the realm and reinstituting His Majesty's law back to the lands.

Trouble: Rigid Theocrat
Annabelle is clever, and good at her job. However, her desire for perfection and clarity in all rulings and laws can on occasion work against her. The layered ecclesiarchal bureaucracy she is building can be slow to move and adapt on occasion, as changes and edicts are scribed and bounced between pontifs, lower adjudicators, inquisitorial offices, the diffuse priest of the villages, justicars at war camp...

Other Aspects:
Deliberate but Uncompromising: Annabelle has a particular way of speaking. That is to say, whilst not necessarily terse, she has an even, weighty way of conducting herself. Taken her position as a judge, this has helped her come across as someone who takes all positions into account, does not rush to decisions, and can be trusted to rule fairly. However, even though she is an adept judge and administrator, Annabelle does not easily budge when having come to a conclusion. Indeed, her more colorful invectives and damning accusations tend to come to play when dealing those who try to wriggle their way free from their just fates. Convicted criminals, monsters and unrepentant heretics can expect little sympathy from her, and she pursues them with zeal.

An Eye for Detail: You do not make it far as an Adjudicator without having a mind that is merely fast, keen and strong. You need to have an exceptional eye for detail as well, and indeed, Annabelle is quick to notice nearly any inconsistency, clue or opportunity. Be it an argument, a civic issue, recruitment of officials, or even battle strategy, she has proven to be able to home on the things that matter.

Iron Grip: Lady Tjarn is loathe to leave things to chance, and everything in as tight a leash as possible. Her bookkeeping is impeccable, and everything in her demesne is kept tabs on. The Justicars, the Inquisitors, and a variety of other sects and agencies, are an extremely characteristic quality of the High Arbitrator's demesne, for she favors a strict, centralized and regimented way of ruling, with officials under charter holding extreme authority.

Stunts:
Justicar Corps: Because I have Justicar Corps, I may substitute Ladyship for Warfare when commanding an army.
The Cream of the Crop: Because only The Cream of the Crop are worthy of serving the High Adjudicator, I may substitute Ladyship for Honor to determine the loyalty of my followers.

SWORD OF SMATTAS. CAN YOU NOT HEAR A WORLD CRY OUT FOR JUSTICE? WHEN WILL YOU DELIVER IT?
Yam Slacker
Kalatha of the Three Precepts, The Smiling Vizier

"Soldiers of the King!"

She looked impeccable: Even girded for war, nothing was even slightly out of place, yet rather than parade-ground polish, everything about her armor and arms spake of being ready for business, the oiled gleam of gear in perfect battle-readiness. Her voice rang true and clear, with mellifluous, dulcet tones carrying all the way to the ones at the back. She was in her element, and had trained for this moment with exacting precision.

"These are our lands, bequeathed by our forebears. This is our nation, so much more than that within the walls of this great bastion where we, the hope for our future, have trained and made ourselves ready for this day. Each and every one of us, those upon this dais and those stretching as far as the eye can see all around, is truly the hand of our King. Each and every one of us will reach out and take back that which was stolen from us! Our cause is just and right, our siblings in arms are as eager and ready as we are ourselves. By the grace of God and the wisdom of the King, we have survived. By the grace of God and the wisdom of the King, we have thrived. By the grace of God and the wisdom of the King, we will reclaim it all!"

Kalatha posted:

Not all wars are won through force of arms, nor all conflicts resolved through fighting. Things can occasionally get fractious within the confines of the Great Castle of the One True King, and the value of a soothing voice to calm the tempers that would otherwise boil over is beyond price. Kalatha of the Three Precepts is renowned as an impeccable diplomat, never flustered or ruffled. A hostess beyond compare, one who always eases the will of even the most adversarial of guests. In these calamitous times, she was a rock, a steady anchor, a fixture in the Great Castle that helped many stay on an even keel.

Exceedingly intelligent, coldly calculating behind a warm and welcoming smile, she is a true master of social manipulation, and her skills at negotiation would be frankly terrifying if they didn't leave you feeling warm, happy and like you'd gotten away with by far the better end of it even as you willingly handed over your valuables. Her word is her bond, and she is always sure to uphold impeccably the letter of her dealings, her reputation as an honest broker thus further secured.

Aspects:
Courtly Manners: 3
Faith: 0
Honor: 2
Ladyship: 2
Magic: 1
Warfare: 1

High Aspect: The Silver Tongue Which Could Beguile The World.
Few could match words and wits with the Smiling Vizier and come out ahead: Her charm and grace are legend, her grace and magnanimity are fable. She can wrap the powerful around her little finger with a phrase, and uplift the hearts of the downtrodden with a word.

Trouble: I am peerless and can fool the world with ease.
She's really good at what she does, and has the arrogance of one who looks around and sees no equal. Whilst she can hide how little she thinks of everyone behind her impeccable veneer of perfect civility, she is prone to being blindsided by those who have mastery of aspects she does not consider vital, and has a tendency to underestimate people outside of her context.

Aspects
"Surely we can resolve this in a peaceable manner...": As a masterful diplomat, she can soothe even the unlikeliest of savage brows, turning a contest of swords into a contest of words. To prevent the battle is to win the battle. Her gilded words are as a balm and ointment even in the face of the fiercest aggravation.

The Perfect Hostess: Her command of decorum and protocol is unrivalled: if the guest-right is invoked, she, and those in her care, will not be found wanting. Acts of impoliteness and impropriety are that much harder to undertake in the face of all that she offers.

Blind the eye with glamour, fill the back with knives: Not every situation can be resolved in a calm, reasonable and civilised manner. Sometimes subterfuge and misdirection are necessary to secure the advantage, and she can be absolutlely, heartlessly ruthless when such an approach is called for.

Stunts
Diplomatic Solution: During the War Phase, substitute Courtly Manners for Warfare to represent efforts to reach a peaceable solution, or failing that manipulate the enemy through subterfuge and ruses de guerre.

Appearance of Piety: As a supreme diplomat and social engineer, Kalatha puts her best face forward towards all people. Her mastery of etiquette and sharp mind ensures she knows what to say regardless of the social stature of her conversational partner, which helps her keep on the right side of the smallfolk. For the purpose of interactions with the peasantry, substitute Courtly Manners for Faith. One must keep up appearances, and few can pay lip service as well as she.

Travel

After a rote blessing from the King the caravans set out for their first engagement. Scouts have plotted courses through occupied forestland and across treacherous seas. After a day of travel the armies meet their enemy, on the dawn of the second day.

The monsters stand easily 8 feet tall, some larger, and they wield massive curved swords ideal for taking heads in one swipe. Fire curls around their mouths as they breathe easily, unafraid of the armies of the Nobility who have come to face them. They've destroyed all the previous buildings over the last ten years and built their own crude shanty towns out of the rubble, there is no sign of women or children, every monster holds a weapon with grim intent.

The battle may be hard, but it must be won, for Wells, charge forward brave heroes!

Go ahead and indicate whether you'll be leading from the front or the back and what kind of battle strategy you'll be using. You get at least +2 to your roll because your troops are well rested and properly trained. I may award you more for a clever strategy.

"Tell your men that this is the command of their prophet: That they must paint their shields with the name Zakiel, angel of warfare and just victory, and give up from each tent a libation of wine; with this, Our Lady on High will see that we are just and grant us victory; the righteous name upon our shields and the libations unto heaven shall be a blessing upon us, and the will of God will speed our arrows, steer our swords and strengthen our armor and our bodies."

Kalatha

When she had said they had trained and made ready for this day, Kalatha had been telling the absolute truth, and she was not one to let a detail go unnoticed. Plans, contingencies, fallback options, logistical solutions. What to do if winning, what to do if losing, what to do if getting slaughtered. Her years of intrigue and diplomacy had prepared her well for this, and she had made completely certain her troops knew what to do. She had a little touch of the Art, and found a practical use for it as a system of communication, projecting predetermined illusory patterns above the battlefield, each pattern a coded message her troops had memorised.

Proper preparation was not the whole of it, by any means. Her entire advance was built around a phenomenal act of subterfuge. Half of her forces were bedecked in gleaming armor and weaponry, tall, pristine, and above all, visible. The other half, they were concealed in the baggage train, disguised as camp followers and hangers-on, or carefully deployed in camouflage as a skirmisher array. Even the baggage train itself had a number of hidden, quickly deployable traps built in, for the plan was based upon the enemy's relentlessness, mercilessness and cruelty: A false retreat after an initial engagement, drawing the enemy into the trap, then enfilading and encircling them by surprise, as most of the concealed forces emerge as planned. She would risk herself in the visible half, to better get the measure of the foe.

Some of the other carts in the baggage train concealed cages: She wanted to take prisoners.

Vario

The strategy Vario intended to employ was a simple one, which turned the monsters' size into a disadvantage. First, archers would rain arrows upon the beasts, to confuse and frustrate them. This would cause the monsters to charge his heavy infantry and pikemen, disposed according to the Pettine formation: two lines, the first of which would appear to crumble against the monstrous assault, instead funneling the beasts against a wall of pikes and then falling on them from behind. In this melee, the monsters' superior size would yield to numerical advantage.
Vario would lead from the frontline, since proper coordination would be vital, and his battle spells could help contain the monsters' fiery breath.

...We danced the Mamushka while Nero fiddled, we danced the Mamushka at Waterloo. We danced the Mamushka for Jack the Ripper, and now, Fester Addams, this Mamushka is for you....
High Adjudicator Annabelle Tjarn

The Battle Marshal offered a crisp salute and a snappy "Hail be, High Adjudicator" as he entered the High Adjudicator's tent, causing the gaggle of advisors arguing loudly over maps and figures spread on tables around the stone faced noble to immediately quiet and offer a salute to their superior.

Annabelle, for her part, acknowledged the salute with a courteous nod. "Greetings, Battle Marshal", she begun in even tones, "How go the preparations?"

"The beachhead fortifications are undergoing construction at the predicted rate, ma'am, supply vessels ought to be well protected and our logistics train properly organized before long."

Once again, Annabelle nodded. "Perfect. That means we can employ our chosen battle strategy without delay. Major Acerbi, why don't you fill him in?" The High Adjudicator's eyes slid to a uniformed woman to her left, who immediately slammed her fist to her chest, in both salute and acknowledgement.

"At once, High Adjudicator", the woman stated in a sharp tone, "Taken the unknown terrain, enemy location, concentration, and strength, the war council has decided to increase scouting allocation. At our current manpower and supply reserve, we cannot readily face the enemy in any battle even remotely even, thus superior intelligence has been deemed a priority", Major Acerbi moved about little wooden circles on the maps on the table, "The crusaders are to maneuver to battlefields chosen in advance. The core will reinforce said area, whilst extended light infantry and skirmisher maniples will ambush tagged enemy formations, and lead them via maniple swapping leapfrogs through a gauntles of missile fire and harrying flanking maneuvers by superiorly mobile forces, towards our fortified core. Once there, the drained and disorganized enemy will slam into fortified and tight formations of our best troops, bolstered by the presence of our Justicars Paladin, at which point our mobile forces will loop back around and attack them from the rear."

The Battle Marshal closed his eyes. "Yes. Our supply of veterans and heavy troops is disappointingly low, they would be rather useless diluted in other formations. If we concentrate them to a spearhead that our auxiliary will lead the enemy to, they can punch above their weight and avoid attrition."

"The sword of law is slow to swing", Annabelle added, "But merciless once it does, its arc yielding to naught. So shall we be also: we will march through these lands, destroying underfoot enemy after enemy, until none remain, and His Word reigns in these lands once more."

"So shall it be", she concluded, "Disperse now, and prepare to spread His Word."

"Little by little the old world crumbled, and not once did the king imagine that some of the pieces might fall on him"

Hector of the Convoy

"We're ready, milord." Hector had gotten used to the title, but it had taken a while. Even his old friend Marco, who'd been with him since the beginning insisted on calling him like that in public. Part of the package "We've got the healers set up, as soon as the battle ends, we'll be starting to cook the victory meal and setting up tents." And the priests and the gravediggers for those who wouldn't make it. Hector had been preparing for months for this day.

"I will look forward to it! The first strike of many against them." Lucia was there as well. She'd been a girl during the convoy. Lost her parents. She'd spent all her years in the city preparing. Not to go back to a farm. No, simply to fight. She fought with short sword and shiled, and was a skilled fighter. More than that, she was loyal, inspiring and good-hearted, if a bit rash. But that was youth wasn't it? If he hadn't been so rash, maybe he'd never have undertaken his namesake.

"And what will be our tactic?" Came the slightly hoarse voice from the badly burned man. Sir Frederico was something of an odd man out in Hector's army. Most of them men here were farmer folk, or at the very least commoner eager to reclaim or avenge their losses. Frederico had been the military advisor to the noble that had once ruled the lands that Hector called home. The same had battled that had claimed the man's life had left the soldier a burned cripple. His lungs had been damaged, so he panted like an ancient man the moment he had to take heavy physical action, one of his eyes was glass, and his right arm barely could grasp utensils. Hector had learned how to lead man, but his knowledge of strategy in a more formal way came from Sir Frederico. The question was likely a test.

Hector looked at the map, then pointed at a slight hill. "This place. Their army is mainly infantry and not a lot of shields. So, archers should hurt them a lot. We'll have a spearwall in the front, and make them charge uphill under our fire. If they stand, they just get shot." He looked at the man, who nodded.

"Simple and effective. Most of your soldiers and officers are green. No sense in trying to be fancy. Good solid fundamentals will do for this."

"What? We're not charging in? I wanted to get some glory." Lucia said.

"Glory can hang." Hector said. "I didn't bring these men and women to take glory. I brought them to take their homes back. You can' do that while you're dead." He thought for a moment, looking at the fire-wracked face of his instructor. "Have barrels of water placed near the lines, with water there, and put volunteers in charge of extinguishing anyone who gets burned. I want as many people to live through this as possible. Well then. I'll take a spear and take a place in the front line."

"Unwise." Fredrico said. "It's brave of course, but the benefits do not outweight the risk. Whatever morale you give them by being there, you might lose thrice over by getting injured, or a moment of panic, or even looking like you died. And if you die..." he shrugged with his good shoulder.

"I know." Hector said. "But if I'm going to send people into war, I should at least have faced it once."

Like a well oiled machine Kalatha's army took to the field. Every part working perfectly with every other part as they met the enemy on the field of battle. For the enemy's part, they seemed to be unaware of the tactics of battle and the deceptive stratagems that can be employed, they walked right into the trap, committing their full forces, only to be caught by surprise and slaughtered en masse by the ambushing soldiers. A handful surrendered, which was surprising that they could even speak your language.

Battle Results: Vario

Vario's battle plan went perfectly. The archers loosed their arrows, infuriating the monsters who continued to run right into the hail of arrows until they met the pikewall. The pikemen performed well, the false retreat luring the monsters straight into the more heavily fortified second row. After that it was just a matter of maintaining discipline and continuing the press against the bigger foe.

In the end, victory, while hard fought, was theirs.

Nadiya

Nadiya felt giddy as she surveyed the shore that would soon be hers. The preparations had been tedious, magically blessing her soldiers and their equipment one by one, but there had been little else to do on the journey.

A paste of ash and boiled water painted around the perimeter of every shield. “Bis combusta non delendum, anulum negabit. Ignis! Manducare podicem meum!” This spell protected the shield from the monsters’ fire breath, as well as anything behind it.

A great many missiles were used to shatter eggs (Nadiya had brought a chest full of blown quail eggs for this spell). “Hoc est cerebrum. [Smash!] Hoc est cerebrum in viro. Vis inquiro!” These ensorcelled arrows and darts would briefly stun any foe they struck.

“Remember: those of you with shields, your role is defend our auxiliaries and skirmishers. Auxiliaries, you are to harry any monsters you can, and to stun any who get close to our defenders. Skirmishers, pounce on any stunned enemy and deliver a mortal blow before they return to their senses.” Nadiya drew her sword and leapt onto the beach. “Let's see those blades glisten with blood! These lands belong to us again!”

A volley of missiles flew at the nearest monster and Nadiya ran up to it, piercing its belly with her sword.

Well supplied, Hector's forces converged on a hill overlooking the enemy encampment. From there they began their assault, with hundreds of arrows for each archer they could let loose down upon the field with little concern about accuracy, instead concentrating on unleashing wave after wave of massed arrows as the enemy tried to climb the hill. The few that made it to the top without becoming pincushions were still weakened from the arrows and easy prey for the well organized fresh soldiers atop the hill.

At first, the two armies seemed evenly matched, what advantages in order and discipline the human army had the monsters countered with raw power. But, as time passed, it became clear that their power was not nearly a match for human magics. Fire breath was countered by shields and superior strength overcome by enchanted projectiles. The battle was hard fought, and men died, but in the end, victory belonged to Nadiya.

Nadiya

The soldiers cheered and hugged when the dust had settled and they saw the land was, indeed, theirs again. Nadiya herself cackled as she wiped blood and vomit from her sword, but bumping into one of the fallen soured her mood somewhat. Time for a speech, she thought.

"Well, that was glorious! It was... really great, but now we... we've gotta bury these guys," she gestures to a corpse, "and start a cemetery. And next to the cemetery we need a church, so we don't forget what we're fighting for. Yes, for glory, but for God's glory! And the True King's! Not just our own. Now let's get digging!"

Good sentiment, they liked that well enough, but the speechifying still needs some work.

SWORD OF SMATTAS. CAN YOU NOT HEAR A WORLD CRY OUT FOR JUSTICE? WHEN WILL YOU DELIVER IT?

Kalatha

Flawless. The military encampment would serve as a headquarters for now, though the need for a keep would be addressed in due course, and she would certainly seek to mollify her people in that regard. This region was now her demesne in the name of the king, and it needed to be profitable in order to fund future endeavours. The soil was rich and fertile, and so she ordered staple crops, brewing crops and tea bushes to be planted as the first priority, once the walls were up. Next, she laid out plans for a brewery, to process the work of the fields. After that, a grand tavern and tea house to cater to all people, a place for travellers to rest and to socialise, and a highly valuable source of income.

Hector of the Convoy

Hector smiled. It had gone better than he'd expected. Better than he had even dared to hope. No graves. No mourning. He'd been standing at the front lines, seeing that tide advance towards them, but grow thinner and thinner as the air turned to death for the critters, volley after volley loosed on them. By the time they'd reached them, all they had the energy to do was impale themselves on the spears for a quick death.

"We have won! This land is reclaimed for God, for the King and for the people of Wells. And we will never hand it off again. We will build a Church here, dedicated to Saint Bessus, the patron of soldiers, for watching over us. And today, we'll get to eat and celebrate. But after that, there's work to be done. These lands have not known the Plow's touch for ten years. It is time to make this land shine gold with grain once again!"

"The march of justice is inevitable", Annabelle's face was stern, her tone even, as she inspected the war camp and addressed the troops, flanked by her guards, "Naught may stop us, as are we armed with His Word and Her Benevolence", she stopped to lay on hands and blessings upon the few wounded, silently thanking God and King that no burial rites were necessary today, "With purpose, and solid, confident stride, shall we prevail."

"And just like our armies, must our lands be built on a strong foundation. Thus must we strike the earth, and till the soil, and with our King-given tithes erect the first Grand Ecclesiarchal Court outside Castle Impervious since the war. Against the coastal cliff shall it stand, as our first and last bulwark against the vile hordes that lay against us. Then may we further expand from a position of strength and stability, and bring the lost law back to these lands."

Hello, Creature! Do You Despise Goat Hating Fascists? So Do We! Join Us at Paradise Lost!

Once the enemy had fled before the holy might of Adjoran - no, of the True King's - army, adjoran spoke to his troops. "Gather up the weapons of our enemies, and place them upon the hill here, where the last of them did turn and flee." When this was done, Adjoran spoke again to the forces there. "Here, at the summit of our victory, shall be the first alter in the grand temple we shall raise here, and with this sacrifice, I concecrate the ground and send thanks the high heavens for our victory!" With this, he touched the pile, and upon his touch and prayer, the pile lit up and fire spread evenly at once; but not one ember touched the ground around it.

Next came the work of settlement. Adjoran parcled out much of their freshly-won land to be farmed and tilled; and he licensed fishers and fishing boats and ordered fisheries build; and parcled off parts of the coast for the collection of mussels while mussel and scallop farms where created and the mussels there bred to readiness.
As for the temple-fortress he ordered built, that; he paid special attention to himself, directing workers, and often blessing them and their work as they moved heavy stones, and he directed the glass-blowers and painters very specificly for the imagery and symbols that would cover decorate the cathedral; likewise, he directed the stone carvers who built the alter and decorated the niches with statues. These works, too, he blessed, as was raised the first Temple-Fortress of the Prophet-Sage. While the nave and its beauitiful soaring domes stood at the center, Adjoran's personal residence, as well as his administrative buildings, was placed behind it, and the whole thing surrounded with walls; and every part of it, even the catherdral's front, fortified and made such that archers could shoot from it and many, many people could seek safty there, in the bossom of God.

Govern Phase Rules
Begin by making Proclamations (Raise or Lower Tax Rates, Set Holidays, Build Order Promises, Public Safety, etc)
Then Civilians (and sometimes Soldiers!) will approach with their Grievances and Problems
Finally your Courtiers and Hangers On will have their say and a Crisis may occur

Nadiya

As fall begins and construction is finished for the year, the people are relatively pleased with your choices. They flock to your Brewery and Church especially, and they reap the benefits of fresh produce from the Field. Your soldiers grumble a bit that they're forced to winter in tents, but a mug of brown with their meals mostly silences that.

Kalatha

As fall begins and construction is finished for the year the people are very pleased with your choices. The Tea House is a big hit, there's nothing that soldiers and civilians alike enjoy more than a cuppa and the cooks know all the local favorites. Some of the tea plants in the Field suffered from blight, but that cleared up with a handful of spells.

Hector of the Convoy

As fall begins and construction is finished for the year the people are somewhat pleased with your choices. They appreciate the opportunities for work with the Fields and Granary, and of course they love the Church, but the soldiers are uncomfortable wintering in the fields in their makeshift tent city.

Annabelle Tjarn

As fall begins and construction is finished for the year the people are very pleased with your choices. There is work for all with room for growth, and the Fortress Cathedral will shelter the civilians in case of enemy attack. The soldiers mumble a bit about how there's plenty of room in the Fortress but they're only allowed in for guard duty, but the holiness of the place mostly squashes that.

Vario

As fall begins and construction is finished for the year the people are quite pleased with your choices. All are fed and sheltered and the Castle stands as a stalwart protector. The soldiers particularly enjoy their stout barracks, happy to no longer be camping out in the fields.

Prophet-Sage Adjoran

As fall begins and construction is finished for the year the people are very pleased with your choices. Man cannot live on bread alone and the introduction of fresh fish to their diet brings a welcome change. The faithful flock to the Fortress Cathedral every day and sing praises to the holy prophet and to the King.

Hello, Creature! Do You Despise Goat Hating Fascists? So Do We! Join Us at Paradise Lost!

St. Adjoran, the Prophet-sage, was pleased at the contentment of his people: full bellies and mirthfull hymns were good for the body and the soul. But, one day, as he prayed, a vision came to him; from without, a darkness encroaching; corn wilting, oats stricken black; men and women wailing, children starving, crying. Opening his eyes, he thanked Our Lady and fasted for the rest of the day, then made the first proclamation of his reign, shortly before the completion of the Temple Fortress.
Speaking to his flock and his advisors, he proclaimed as such:
"I have seen a blight approaching, a plague upon our fields. Therefore, I command now that through the harvest, on every 7th day, the day before the day of rest, all corn and oat and what and any other growing thing that is harvested, shall go into the storehouses and be saved, such that when the blight shall come, and it will, we shall have stores from which to feed the poor and the hungy and The King and Our Lady of the high heavens shall see our prudence and our wisdom."
Further, here, with his advisors, he planed out his taxes, and decided to set it as was usual for a holding like this, or had been, at least, before such holdings were lost.

This was the First of Adjoran's proclamations. Upon the day of the completion of the temple-fortress, when the sacred sacrifices had been made, he named it as the Temple-Fortress of the Prophet, and then made further proclamations.
Religious ones, in his name as prophet and saint. These he poclaimed to all his flock.
"My children, my faithfull brothers and sisters, i have often heard you sing my praises as i walk these halls, and having heard your voices name me many times in beautiful hymns, i speak to you now to grant wisdom. For varily, they who clothes a naked child, or feeds a begger from their table, or invites a stranger into his house and out of his rain, such a person is dearer to me and nearer the heart of Our Lady than they who sings a thousand hymns and praises. Sing and praise Our Lady and the many Holy Saints if you wish, but do not forget that it is by action, not my song and word, that God knows the measure of your hearts."
This was his first religious proclamation; for another, he declared that, for ten years, upon the anniversiy of their victory, here would be a day of fasting for all who were not old, or younger than twelve summers, nor sick, nor pregnant, in thankfulness to god for the miracle that drove away their enemy; and that for ten years, upon every other anniversery of the compleation of the Fortress-Temple, there would be a Feast, in celebration of the life that had been built here by their own hands.

Ordering a stockpile of food for the comming blight; and setting the taxation level to 5. I'm also reminding/telling people that charity is holier than singing praises, and instituting an annual day of fasting and a bianual celebration, for ten years. Naming the Fortress Cathedral the 'Temple-Fortress of the Prophet'

...We danced the Mamushka while Nero fiddled, we danced the Mamushka at Waterloo. We danced the Mamushka for Jack the Ripper, and now, Fester Addams, this Mamushka is for you....
High Adjudicator Annabelle Tjarn

Annabelle sat in her office in the Grand Ecclesiarchal Court , signing off a variety of proclamations and paperwork on public spending and projects. First of all, tax rates were going to be kept at Kingdom Standard for their current population, for even though Annabelle personally believed that greater personal sacrifice would have been perfectly reasonable taken their nature as settlers braving harshness and adversity, but nevertheless, she was well-enough acquainted with the peasantry to know they would likely have been resistant to the idea regardless. No matter, even with the standard tax rate and the One True King's stipend, they ought to have more than enough funds for her plans. Her plans to start up basic industry, to be more exact. Not just to strengthen their walls, but because they could only rely on His Majesty's supplies and patchwork equipment repairs for so long, after all. What they needed was actual smiths. And she made very sure to have the town criers advertise this fact, so that the proper talent could be swiftly recruited come next year.

Other than that, she still had to petition His Majesty. Annabelle grabbed her quill.

The Petition posted:

Your Majesty, Our One True King, He who reigns on the Holy Charter and Authority of our God Above,

Hear this plea and suggestion of your chosen High Adjudicator, she who you have chosen to vanguard our assault against the vile hordes that have taken our rightful homelands. SWORD OF SMATTAS. CAN YOU NOT HEAR A WORLD CRY OUT FOR JUSTICE? WHEN WILL YOU DELIVER IT?
Yam Slacker
Kalatha

She looked upon her works and saw that it was good: An indelible footprint from which to build and progress. Reports of the work of her peers were overwhelmingly positive: The first steps of the reconquest had been near-flawless. That would probably change over time, but for now it was enough to be getting on with. She gathered her soldiers and peasantry before the Tea House, and made an appearance at an upper balcony,

"My friends, my comrades in arms, my brothers and sisters in claiming and working this land, on behalf of myself, on behalf of the King to whom we all owe fealty, on behalf of our God to whom we all owe worship: Thank you. Thank you for all that you have done to get us to this point, with the vile monsters driven back, our first solid step taken and planted on our soil forevermore. It was your hand upon the blades of war, your hand upon the lathe and upon the mason's trowel, your hand upon the the sickle and scythe. We have brought civilisation back to our rightful lands!"

She paused, and assumed a more determined, sharper mien.

"But this is just the first step. A bold one, a strong one, a successful one, but meaningless if we do not take another, then another, then another! We do not march alone on this course: Or kinsfolk under the banners of our friends and countrymen have also succeeded, and will also continue to succeed. We shall march in lockstep with them, and together we will bring these lands under proper control once more! To that end, I have sent invitations to the leaders of our fellow travellers, our fellow warriors. An invitation to visit us here, at the Tea House built by dint of your great labours, that we may synchronise our strategies and stride forth together to tighten our grip upon our rightful land! Our guests have fought just as hard, as just a great a foe, and we should greet them as our own siblings, with hospitality unmatched in all the realm. Some may have local matters to attend to, and we understand that all too well: Those who cannot attend, we wish them the best, and hope to meet when feasible."

A more magnanimous expression,

"My people, we have done much, but there is much still to do. None save God and those of the Saints she blesses with prophecy can say what the future truly holds, but I will say this: We have made a start, not a completed thing. There will be work for our architects and builders, our labourers and soldiers. It will be hard, challenging, wearying, but ultimately satisfying in the very best of ways. We build not just a settlement or a kingdom: we build a legacy, and we will forever be remembered and lauded as the first of the reconquest, with our peers. Now, we must be diligent and vigilant, ever watchful: Not just for threats without, but hindrances within, as well. Our tea crop showed signs of blight, but the swift reporting meant an equally swift magical response to cure it. So too must it be in all things: If you see a problem or potential problem, respond swiftly! Even if it turns out as minor, it is better for us to know. Our future is in your eyes and ears, in your hearts and minds, in the work of your hands and the piety of your souls. Our future will be bright!"

Hector of the Convoy

Hector spoke to a gathering of farmers and soldiers in front of the finished granary. "I never was one for big gestures. Words come out of mouths, they don't fill them. One of the most important jobs of being your noble is to see that you're safe, and to make sure you have food to eat. Now, and in the future. Many of you are farmers. You know that a good harvest one year doesn't promise anything for the next year. And you know how important it is to store food for the leaner years. I don't regret what got built. But, I also hear what people want. And honestly, I'm not as young as I used to be, so I'm feeling you when you say you're tired of sleeping in a tent. So let me go and say that. There will be barracks next year. You will sleep under solid roofs and real beds next year. There's a promise for you."

"But there's still gonna be work to do. For the soldiers and the civilians. Together with the others, this Peninsula will be claimed for Wells and the King. We will forge it into a place of peace and prosperity. As we remember it being. We will take every acre back!"

The rough-hewn wooden chair that was serving as Nadiya's throne was uncomfortable and hurt her rear end, so she preferred to pace within her court. There was some murmuring that all this activity muddled her thinking, but her first proclamation put that to rest:

“We still don't have a barracks, and won't until next year when our carpenters finish their work. I swear to God and King,” she gets down on one knee for this, “that I will have a barracks built next year. Until then, our soldiers are free to live with villagers or in our church as they desire. They reclaimed this land, so share a mug with them. Share a pew.”

St. Adjoran

Sitting in court, the people come to the Saint to have their Grievances resolved. First is young Arthur and the two women who each claim he promised to marry them! Arthur claims nothing of the sort. "Your Holiness, this is all a misunderstanding, I never promised to either of them, although Ella's very sweet and Rachel has the cutest smile in the domain." He proclaims, to loud gasps from both women, who burst out in simultaneous protest. Further compounding the issue is it seems both are with child!

Annabelle Tjarn

One day in court, the people started to come to the High Adjudicator with claims that need adjusting. First is the matter of a stolen cow. Old Salt claims the cow has been his since it first calved, while Ulster says Old Salt stole the cow, his finest milker, but has no records of ownership, not even a brand. Also at issue is the calf born on Old Salt's land from the cow.

Kalatha

Kalatha's pronouncement of see something, say something has every citizen bringing reports in almost daily. The local clerks are getting overwhelmed and would like a permanent office assigned, with commensurate benefits, for a new clerk. This would cost an extra two coins a year in overhead, Meanwhile the clerks have so far been able to handle the caseload, they're simply unhappy at all the extra hours.

Hector

At Hector's impromptu court more and more civilians keep asking the same question, when will you build an apothecary to deal with all these cases of Fish Rot? Fish Rot is a disease caused, it is believed, by not eating enough fish, and results in weak muscles and an unpleasant fishy odor. Allocating workers from the fields to the coasts to fish costs nothing, but there could always be a more serious disease in the future.

Nadiya

A goodwife by the name of Jam is upset at her soldier lodger. "He never does a lick of chores. All I ask is that he chop the firewood same as me boys and I'll treat him the same, but he won't even do that! Hard to believe he lifted one finger to fight the monsters with an attitude like that." She finished with a loud sniff.

Vario

A trader has come to town from a far away land, bearing exotic spices and strange curved swords. The swords are the finest quality and he is willing to part with them for a single coin, and they would be enough to arm the soldiers, although their strange shape and unfamiliar balance might put off the soldiers in real combat.

She does not hesitate: An efficient clerical office would be vital to keeping on top of things. She spends time with the clerks, watching them work, speaking with them collectively and individually, even going so far as to take a day working alongside them personally. She advises them on smoothing the workflow, and makes absolutely sure they know that their vital work is fully appreciated. She accedes to the request once she has had her chance to see the current conditions for herself.

Upkeep costs increased 2 coins per annum for a properly funded permanent clerk's office to handle the intel stream from the peasantry.

St. Adjoran, the Prophet-Sage

Adjoran holds court in the Temple-Fortress in front of the alter, a large but comfortable chair having been brought out for the occasion, such that all may know that they are beneath the eye of god.
Adjoran takes a deep breath, then sighs, and gives all three of them a stern look. Then, he takes on a gentler expression and speaks to all three of them.
"I will ask you to tell your stories once again. And if any of the children could have other fathers, that, too, you will tell me. Then, if you speak truthfully, there will be no more contradictions, and I will settle this dispute generously and leniently. If, however, someone is still lying, we shall go to the alter and I will invoke the vision of Our Lady to find the truth. But if you" here, he gives them each another severe look " force me to ask for divine assistance for such a petty matter, i will be neither lenient nor generous, for it is a grave matter to speak untruth and evade punishment within the hallowed halls of Our Lady's temples. Now, tell me the matter again, with no lies."

Hector nods thoughtfully at that. He'd checked those prices already. But there were matters of coin. Do the best with what little you got. "We don't need fancy cures for the Fish Rot. We need to eat some fish. We'll have some people take in the sea's bounty, and it'll all be well." He said. "Of course, that don't mean we're not going to need these things in the end. I didn't bring you all here to die from a disease. So here's my promise. Next year, the barracks get built. The year after that, we build the Apothecary. Annabelle sat on her throne in the courtroom, face as stone and unflinching as she listened to the peasants' grievance. She listened patiently and without interrupting, until the two quieted out of their own accord. Only then did she speak, tone deliberate. "Certainly there is no crime too small for His Majesty's justice. And certainly is it so too, that without lower courts in place, all grievance, no matter how minor, must pass by me, the High Adjudicator of the Ecclesiarchy. Realize, however, that I state this not because I object to this burden. I do not state it so as to imply you are beneath my notice", her gaze was steely, as she spoke, "But I state it so that you know that I am the highest word of His Majesty's law other than He himself. So that you know that whichever one of you is the one that is lying, is lying under a blessed agent of His Will and Her Benevolence, and thus lying not just to me, but to our King and God. After the truth is found, and it will be found, chastisement for the guilty party shall be stern."

"As for this crime, you are currently both suspects, and shall not move or act about with the oversight of court justicars. Lodgings will be provided for you for the duration of the investigation, to be performed by a court appointed inquisitor, who will name a prime suspect after their work. "Am I understood? Good. I declare court adjourned."

The clerks, accompanied by the new Head Clerk Uther Pensmith, present the results of their findings. "We've had 100 uncorroborated monster sightings, 2 verified monster sightings that were dispatched by soldiers on patrol at the time, and nearly every citizen has expressed concerns over what they refer to as a 'sinkhole'. I have personally been to the sight in question and it is no sinkhole, it appears to be a burial mound not in any of the pre-Calamity records. I would like your permission to begin a dig to learn more."

The dig will employ 5 civilians on a permanent basis and cost 1 coin in upkeep until all the history has been extracted. It does not have a build cost.

St. Adjoran

It requires only a stern frown and an aura of command to reveal the truth. The young man never did ask either of them to marry them, he's definitely the father, but he'd happily wed Ella in a heartbeat just to leave the courtroom with his skin intact. So one impromptu wedding ceremony later and all three are hustled off to a plot to farm and hopefully won't cause any more issues.

If only the next problem was as easy. Two travelling merchants are both claiming right of first refusal on excess harvest for the season. Of course, there's no excess harvest and the documents they display, while genuine, were issued by different branches of the Church. In any case, they're not leaving until one of them has genuine guaranteed rights for when there finally is an excess harvest (in two years, maybe).

Hector

The people are pleased with Hector's decision making. Of course, now he has to deal with a foreign diplomat here to 'zee the rugged farmfolk' as he puts it in his heavily accented Wellsh. Sir Auberge De Lupin is here to drink any wine you have in you cellars, try to fondle your servants, and will probably try to steal anything not nailed down. But you can't be rude to him, he's a guest of the King!

The merchant bows and praises your understanding of battle tactics. "I had not considered this. Next time I come through your country, I will bring the straight swords, to fit between your mighty shields." He sells some spices to a few cooks and then leaves your territory relatively happy.

The next claimant is two goodwives arguing over chickens. Goody Bell claims that Goody Sarah's chickens are breaking into her yard, starting fights with her cocks, and stealing all the grain she puts out. Goody Sarah claims that her chickens are well behaved and would never do such a thing unless somebody left the gate open.

Annabelle Tjarn

The Justicars find Old Salt was the guilty party, he'd never even had a milking cow according to his neighbors, and this was backed up by census data from when the civilians left Castle Impervious. He was sentenced to hard labor working in the other man's field, and both the cow and the calf were returned to their rightful owner.

The Runner returned from the King's castle! He brings the Knights Charter.

Nadiya

After the matter with the soldier is resolved, a strange quiet falls over the court. A man appears (after running frantically through a cloud of smoke) in a flash. "I am the Magus Heron Speck, I offer my services to your court." It's hard to tell if he's a charlatan, but his robes are somewhat ill kept and his beard is obviously fake. It doesn't help that there's no organization cataloging the skills and descriptions of legitimate Magi.

Hello, Creature! Do You Despise Goat Hating Fascists? So Do We! Join Us at Paradise Lost!

St. Adjoran, the prophet sage

Please with the swift resolution of the first matter, Adjoran greets the merchants kindly and listen to their complaints. First, he reviews the papers, and they do not seem to be forgeries.
"Ah, i appologize. It seems that different branches of the church have failed to propperly communicate in their administrative duties. Whoever of you first applied for the right of first refusal shall have it, and latter party will have the right of second refusal. I shall also contact the relevant branch of the church and ensure that some compensation is made available to the latter party on account of this mistake, or provide it myself if needed. Now, you may tell me plainly when you made this contract or, if you do not trust your fellow merchants, will send out runners to confirm the dates."

Nadiya

“Speck,” Nadiya spat out.

“...yes, m’lady?” He seemed expectant.

“Thank… you… but I don't need any magicians at this time, especially not…” she struggled to keep a straight face. “Not magicians... of your caliber. Go pester someone else.”

Heron Speck looked crestfallen, but then he adjusted his beard and his confidence returned. “Oh, but you haven't seen what I can do!” He ran over to a table, grabbed a candle, and held the flame over his palm. Sure enough, fire erupted from his palm. He grinned at Nadiya, “See? Oh dear.” The fire had spread from his palm and began creeping up the sleeve of his robe. He extinguished it awkwardly and grinned again.

Out!”

“If you ever change your mind, I'll be right outside!” Speck turned to Nadiya's courtiers and added, “If you need my services, my fees are very reasonable.” He repeated that line to every petitioner he encountered on the way out.

Self-compelling Unity in Strength to have Heron Speck stick around like a remora and generally be an annoying hanger-on. Fate Points: 1.

Kalatha

She looked over the budget projections: She was mindful of simply agreeing to every single expense laid before her, but this was a worthwhile endeavour.

"Permission granted, let's see what's down there. Be respectful, it may be an ancestor, so treat those interred with the care you would treat the remains of a great-great-grandparent."
