Can someone please explain why an ancient piece of poo poo appears to be part cockroach even during blatant attempts to kill it, but whenever I really need a car/van/truck to survive more than a year it promptly has a weird untreatable issue? It's like some sort of spiteful amalgamation vehicle-cat-horse.

Edit: My current vehicle is a 99 Pathfinder. Previously I had a POS Astro van that I spent far, far too much time and money fixing up that blew some electrics and had to be scrapped. So I buy this crappy SUV off a friend of a friend and it immediately needs tires, clutch CV joints, ball joints and an AC recharge, but whatever it was cheap to start with. Thing is I needed the camper-van becasue I'm going to do a huge cross country trip and I can't sleep in an SUV. So out comes everything down to bare metal except the front seats. A plywood platform goes in with a mattress and it's the world's shittiest most cramped camper conversion ever.
Uh partly confirmation bias, everyone always says "man they made things so much better back then!" (be it houses, cars, electronics, whatever) but it turns out all the poo poo things were scrapped and long-gone so it's just the cream of the top that still keep around and will probably keep doing so for awhile longer.

but also probably mostly that most trucks and suvs are built like garbage for idiot americans to pay 200% mark-up on hoping they break and buy another one because they are idiots. Unless of course you go the correct route and you get a toyota tacoma or subaru suv-- those things are godly immortal beasts.

Sorry. I couldn't find anyone to make you a cool cipher-themed avatar, and the look on this guy's face cracks me the fuck up.
We have a 97 Mitsubishi Lancer (known as a Mirage in the US I think) that is on 320,000kms. My missus did 120,000 of those, during which I performed the following maintenance:
  • 3 oil and oil filter changes
  • 1 front brake pad change
  • 1 spark plug change
  • Occasional oil and coolant top ups, its been run low on both a lot though, and I think the oil rings on cylinder #2 are now stuffed because lately I've had to do:
  • Occasional cleaning of spark plug from cylinder #2
I do feel a bit bad about it but she used to do 140km a day so she was putting that mileage on fast.

She also had a couple of minor accidents (with non structural damage) that have been "fixed" by me on the cheap, the first was with full insurance but as car was only valued at $1800 they just wrote it off. We brought wreck back for $250 and I used ratchet straps to pull front end vaguely back into shape (enough that bonnet could be opened and closed). Then there was the time she hit drivers side mirror into a pole - we were renovating at the time so I fetched a suitably sized shard of our old bathroom mirror from the bin and glued it right over the broken mirror - looks like hell but it works.

Honda in general designs really weird automatics compared to how every other manufacturer does it and because of how they work
I believe that they originally did this because Borg-Warner had the patents needed to make a normal automatic so Honda designed their auto to work around them. Why they persist with it now that (I'm guessing) those patents have expired is beyond me because they are awful. I remember when my mum upgraded from a 93 to an 07 civic, the latter felt OK when it was new but 30,000km later and it felt every bit as much as an unresponsive turd as the old one.

Honda in general designs really weird automatics compared to how every other manufacturer does it and because of how they work, electrical problems can cause a solenoid in the trans to drop out and make it slip into neutral. I don't doubt the existence of a design flaw in the V6 auto but really wonder how many have been replaced or rebuilt over electrical problems because who would ever expect that to be the root cause of dropping gears randomly

The early-mid '00's V6/auto Honda fiasco had to do with lack-of-lubrication of a particular gear - second, IIRC, and was pretty well-documented. There were also issues with clutch-pack slippage and early V6 cars had torque converter problems as well, my belief is that the trans just isn't strong enough for the V6 engine's output.

You're right about the solenoid issue, but I like Honda's design because the solenoids are external and can be changed easily. Saturn used the same oddball no-planet trans design as Hondamatics, but with a more-conventional solenoid layout. They had bad issues with valve-body warpage.

My car-that-wouldn't-die was an OG Jeep Cherokee w/4.0, an indestructible engine if there ever was one. Went 350K miles before needing much of anything, then it nickel'd and dimed me for a few years 'til I sold it. AFAIK, it's still running around town.

spin that 45 funk.
my dad's got a 1989 gray Toyota pickup still. he bought it shortly after buying the "family car" which was a 1990 Camry LX (i think). he used "Gray" as his commuting work horse.

about 10 years ago the Camry suffered fatal wounds at the hands of my brother & mom who tag teamed it in two separate incidents but Gray soldiered on.

anyway, Gray still gets my admiration for its simplicity. it doesn't even have a proper name. the back just says T O Y O T A and here's what it didn't come with:

• automatic transmission
• a back seat
• a radio (just a tiny LCD clock)
• climate control
• a passenger side mirror

it broke down many times over the years, spent a period covered in a sheet in the garage, but it always comes back when my dad feels like working on it.

Doesn't seem like a car that just wouldn't die to me, it died 3 times. And yeah, Honda are just loving weird, they refused to follow anyone. Back in the day nissan, mazda and maybe mitsubishi formed JATCO (Japanese auto trans co) to work together and build automatic trans. I'm no sure about toyota, maybe they did, or maybe they went with aisin from the get go (or maybe aisin came from.after JATCO), but honda just went all weird on their own from the beginning.

To the man with the escort wagon, you are lucky you live in Oregon because in the salt belt those things are known for the tops of the strut towers rusting out. They will still be running just fine but you'll literally have the rear struts bust through the metal and be poking into the trunk.

I have an outback with 255k and it's only had two sets of headgaskets and new slightly larger pistons on the driver's side because they were piston slapping and my dad (original owner) paid too much to have the dealer replace them. It's an auto and I hate the 4eat but goddamn if they aren't pretty unkillable. I drive this vehicle 80+mi every day.

I also have had numerous toyotas with over 250k on them, and my 4runner is at like 235k right now. Why anyone buys new cars when a couple grand can get you a fine toyota is a mystery to me.

What finally killed it was a flat tire i was unable to replace so i tradwd the thing for an ounce of weed.

My dad had a 1980 Dodge Van with a 318 in it that went everywhere from 1984 to 1999. Aside from routine maintenance, the only major overhaul he did was change the timing chain and gears at 200,000 miles (the OG gears had nylon teeth that were nubs when that timing chain cover came off). He finally sold it for $500 to a carpet installer with over 350,000 miles on it. The guy drove it out of state, and last we heard of it (about 12 years ago), it was still on the road.

it needs some new suspension parts and the paint's falling off but whatever.

I have a 1991 Volvo 240 i bought for $500 and drive sometimes. this spring the engine caught on fire and I was able to fix that for $50 too.

yeah honda didn't want to license the borg-warner patents for automatics so they made their own which is sort of closer to a stickshift box. it doesnt use planetary gears and is extremely temperamental and requires careful attention.

e2 also I was at the junkyard a couple weeks ago and saw an automatic from ~04 ish Miata and damned if it wasn't the exact same Aisin transmission in my Volvo.
