Somewhere distant, but much closer than expected, a signal sounded within a Rook Crafting Vacuole. Immediately, a portion of the vast body's attention coalesced around the unexpected stimulus. The Academy of Titan, not precisely competitors but not exactly firm allies of Rook Engineered Organisms. Nevertheless, even as the call was being considered fabrication was underway. Nothing special was needed for the likes of AoT, but neither was insulting them with a slipshod avatar. No, something simple and workmanlike. Baseline appearance, pleasant, androgynous, temporary.   "This is Rook. This one is know as Mellifluous, but we will not mince words with trivialities. The surviving V-Vector and his affairs. We desire access to and ownership of the pathogen refined by our late asset and passed to this [Ra]. Worst of all, it looked like the V-vector Ra MaximVm was making a break for it by hitching a ride off the planet atop the Academy of Titan's THOR unit as it made its exit into the uppermost atmospheres. Cosmiq was going to have its hands full dealing with Pertinax and the Purifiers in keeping the human genome scrubbed clean. At the very least, Dr. Wiley could save up for one last big, banging 'hurrah' before the party ended. The atmosphere grew thin, but the fierce updraft was still keeping Ra MaximVm from falling off. He checked the readouts. All green. He reached out behind his seat, and retrieved his Bukkit-O-Drugz. Just as he was peeling the lid off, something froze him in place. A hissing sound. Very brief, but he was sure he had heard it. He ran his hand across the cockpit's wall. The Dragoon was cleared for vacuum environments, but it had taken several beatings back there. Best to leave nothing to chance. The drugz were set down and he got to work. He dug through the pile of assorted equipment cluttering the cockpit, eventually finding the Convergent Armor. Integrated air supply. He slung the armor over his body. Only loosely, his plating attachement points had been broken in the earlier botched armor removal. Yet as he put it on he could feel screws being driven into his bones... --- Today's rain had come early. It started with a cylinder that fell and caved in the head of Zeie. His son couldn't cry out. The words wouldn't come, but it was not long until rest of the tribe saw what had happened. There was no time for a burial. With shaking hands everyone grabbed what they could from his harness and ran for cover. Zeie's son having to be dragged by hand. It started with the sharp clangs of metal on metal. Nuts, bolts and other small detritus striking the heaps. Quickly the individual impacts grew in number into painfully loud roaring, interspersed by crashes that shook the ground. The tribe huddled together underneath an outcropping of heat warped structural beams. Dust and smoke dimmed the evening light, and then nothing could be seen. All that remained were the sounds of the rain. Clatter and pitter-patter. Shattering screams and the thuds of flaming bales of garbage. Darkness. Eventually, one word was spoken. The tribe reached for the source in anticipation. The elder had made the decision to spend some of the tribe's precious batteries. She dug through her harness and unlatched the device. After a moment of fumbling in the dark she managed to press the wires together, and there was a little light. She lighted the tribe's faces one by one. Their loss was apparent. She turned the light away. There.. would be time later to look into their eyes. She aimed the flickering light to the wall behind them, taking a moment to observe the crevice they had taken shelter in. It was of metal, scarred by heat but still recognizable as having once been the wall of a building. Words were written upon it in an unknown tongue. From the elder's backpack spoke a faint, tinny voice: "-st too, Palatua Falloff Zone." Wasting no more time she aimed the flashlight out to the open. The rain had slowed, but not ended. Even so there were figures moving under it. Foolhardy crawlers. Armed with thick, wide brimmed helmets and red-hot radars they dared the rain as soon as possible for the first picks of salvage. One of them was getting closer to the tribe's shelter. The elder held the tribe's gun steady. The stranger got the message and backed away. In the morning the tribe did a quick sweep of the surrounding area. There was no sign of Zeie. The body had been buried deep in fresh junk. Everybody worked hard, desperate to keep their minds off the matter. Sadly it was slim pickings today. A few good cables, a chunk of insulation that might boil into glue. If there had been something more valuable the crawlers had taken it already. It was unlikely that anything more remained. Yet they kept digging. All but the son of Zeie. When forcibly pulled to his feet he questioned the elder as to why they kept digging. She raised her hand to slap the child, but slowed, stopped. Dropped her hand. A few hours' walk later something emerged from behind the dunes of garbage. Darkened junk, scattered and flattened. A blast crater. And at it's bottom stood gleaming white metal. They paced around their find. A machine unscratched by it's fall. Large enough that five of them could comfortably stand inside it, were it hollow. On it's polished side were several sealed hatches, and from the others poked out bent pipes and parts. The tribe's surviving scout gave the machine one more tap, waited, and then, finally certain, he nodded to the elder. Indeed then. This should be worth it. She took off her backpack, and from it retrieved the prophet. She carried it close to the machine, set it down on the ground and attached the antenna. For a time nothing happened. Then the prophet spoke in garbled wails and static. The elder remained calm. She had by now learned that this was normal. The rest of the tribe backed away fearfully as the prophet's cries grew more intense. Eventually, they subsided. The elder spoke the command. No response. She repeated herself, louder. By the fifth time the prophet ceased it's moaning, and responded: "-rea, Industrial Cleaning Unit - Segment 2A - Couplings: 1Free Duromax, 2Free Wetwarez, 3Free..." The prophet spoke on in it's garbled voice, tirelessly listing the machine's components one by one. As she listened, the elder fidgeted with her necklace. A find like this could sustain the tribe for many a night, but, inevitably, also attract attention. She already knew before she heard the scout yelling. In every direction of the horizon, there was a dark line rising to the skies. Plumes of black smoke converging on their location. Every member of the tribe started digging furiously. Sparing no effort or precious fuel in order to bury themselves deep into the ground before they came. All but the son of Zeie. He stood his ground, even as his family disappeared beneath. He stood his ground, even as a six wheeled beast, black and yellow, climbed over the dune, drove down the slope of the crater, and stopped inches before hitting him. A hatch opened on top of the vehicle. From within emerged one of them, holding a rifle, aimed at the son of Zeie. The child gasped. He was more metal than man. --- Something hit the Dragoon. It's feet finally slipped from THOR's surface, sending the rig astray. Ra MaximVm scrambled to stop the spinning, managing just barely to control it with the rig's thrusters. He reached the Dragoon's leg out back towards THOR, but then he realized that he was not falling. Looking outside, he could see stars. Act: BOOSTED - Put on the Convergent Armor. and... It is somewhat quiet, a lot of the big representatives participate remotely from their own premises these days. "Yes, we are here following the thrilling conclusion of RISE! You asked for it, you got it!" He grabs a tray full of cans and rises onto his feet. "Helllooo~ Wrecking Crew! Have a Slüus! On the house!" He starts throwing cans of Slüus around the lounge. Before hitting anyone the containers halt in midair, and abruptly fall onto the floor. Exorbitantly dressed people all around cast Lamm dirty looks and raise their privacy shields. Lamm freezes up. He manages a nervous laugh, sets the tray down and then returns to his chair. For a moment he looks like he wants to disappear into it. Soon enough he shrugs and gives a tired but genuine smile. "Well, Slüusing Time has officially begun, so drink up kids! And Open The Gates! Share one with a friend!" "...But don't overdo it." "Please. Don't..." A drop of sweat can be seen on Lamm's brow before the automated censor eliminates it from the feed. He takes a few seconds to collect himself before speaking. "We here stand for all of our viewers. He'd had some ideas he'd been brewing and he knew that getting Cosmiq access to a Supply Key in the upcoming map would be in line with the corporation's best interests. Dr. Wiley crossed all of Cosmiq's challenges off. He knew he had to start from scratch now that they were in the last stages of the map.
